Can we now agree the press coverage about MM was racist?

Only comment if you've seen the Harry and Meghan documentary because only in that programme did I become aware of the headlines.

If you've seen this programme specifically the images of some of the headlines and STILL don't think some of the press coverage was racist then quite frankly you're part of the problem.

I quote, she has 'exotic DNA', Harry marries a ''gangstar' and 'she is from Crenshaw where they have xxx crime rates last year' (she wasn't even from Crenshaw), 'straight outta Compton'

Seriously, do you seriously think this would have been said about a blonde hair blue eyed women?

For the record, I'm not a H&M fan at all - you don't have to like them to see that the headlines were racist, why can't brits just admit and agree on this?

I am not doing your work for you. Do you expect me to sit and sweep up all the negative articles about Meghan with subtle racism in, for you? You won't believe it anyway.

It shouldn’t take long, there just aren’t that many?

Janieread · 11/12/2022 10:34

It's bizarre to suggest that every single person who thinks H&M are annoying and irrelevant does so because they are racist and have been directed to be racist by the Daily Mail. I'm sure there are people who think they are marvellous who also read newspapers.

Whatever. You’re just sounding delusional now.

Please go away, look up the definition of ‘Conscious Bias’ yourself (do not ask for a link 🙄), and then do some of your own research. It might take a while, so we may not see you back on this thread for a few days.

Oh and, please don’t change your MN username once you’re back commenting on race issues after educating yourself.

The irony!

NaturalBae · 11/12/2022 10:46

It’s actually the Right Wing British Press that have been viciously attacking Meghan, esp. the racist rag that lost to Meghan in Court.

It’s well known that ‘The Daily Mail’ is also known as ‘The Daily Fail’.

One doesn’t have to read any of those racist tabloids to get a gist of their lines of attack. Their headlines constantly and annoyingly are included in the news feeds on our phones. You don’t even have to ‘Google’ the bile.

I agree. An identifier of being Black is not only skin tone.

jamoncrumpets · 11/12/2022 11:09

Meghan identifies as being black. And people are constantly disrespecting her by calling her a 'person of colour'.

Qazwsxefv · 11/12/2022 11:21

@Coucous

thank you for your kind reply. She was upset because the term they were told to use now is “black” rather than the ethnicity she sees herself - the irony of a white British teacher telling one of the few non white kids in the class that she is racist because she didn’t use the correct terminology was lost on them. DD is now in a new school where she is in the ethnic majority and they refer to themselves as Asian/British Asian and it’s much easier. Have noticed several other good changes with just the little things like the selection of colouring pencils for skin colours being varied - DD now draws people in all shades

It probably is a bit of a derail of this thread. I find it very hard to find the correct term to refer to the group of people who are at risk of racism due to their ethic origin.

non-white - no good as defining people by what they are not not what they are makes it out to be a negative

black - not everyone who is subject to racism is black

POC - too close to coloured

Coloured - just racist

BAME - as said in last post why is black singled out

ethnic minority - only works when the population in question is a minority which isn’t always true (I live in Leicster) and seems bizarre when referring to the largest ethnic group in the room so you end up with a clunky “ethnic minority in the country as a whole “ - but not obviously worldwide as a whole.

and as I’ve done in the top defining people as “those people who are at risk of racism due to their ethic origin” just centres the racism not the person.

to the original point MM has clearly faced racism in the uk and the gutter press are well gutter press, however I think if she had been a quiet, meek, non self promoting, brit and black, who just did as she was told by the RF then the press would have continued to love her.

Basically, if MM was not ‘uppity’? A
s described by Eamonn Holmes. That race row was also all over the British Press (albeit some of us were not aware of it).
There you go - yet another point of reference to for some posters to ‘Google/research’.

Until MM, I didn't realise uppity was considered to be a racist insult and have used it in the past (to describe white people) as well as having a teacher call me uppity years ago (I'm white).

Well, the question is - now you know, will you refrain from using the word ‘uppity’ when referencing a Black person?

If not, that’s how initial ignorance transforms into racism.
It’s racism if you what know you’re saying or doing is discriminative and you continue to say &/or do it!

Everyone NEEDS to check their Unconscious Bias.
All employers should be instructing their employees to undertake Unconscious Bias Training Courses. If you’re not currently employed, Google it!

XanaduKira · 11/12/2022 12:21

I have never used it to reference a black person @NaturalBae & now I know it's considered racist, I absolutely never would use it.

Is it racist though? I thought it just meant self important / arrogant / someone who is a bit up themselves, so still don't get the racist connotations (but accepting it's considered racist, I wouldn't use it).

You know... I tell you what.. wouldn't it mean something if Kate, who is passionate about Early Years, that is her 'thing'... what if she concentrated on talking about raising anti racist children and focussed psychologists and studies on learning how to prevent prefudice taking root.

Children pick up on what their parents, teachers, TV, peers say and are bombarded with messages and surely a study to look into how this evolves and how to combat biaised messaging would be something so worthwhile. And it would give out a message to the public that the RF/Head of State understands and wants to combat racism in all its forms.

"We are not a racist family" doesn't really cut it for me. They have to prove that by releasing diversity figures and being proactive.

Just my thoughts

No it has history with black people not showing enough deference to their masters. As soon as I knew it was racist a long time ago, I googled it to understand why.

It was frequently lobbed at the Obamas by right wing conservatives who pretended they didn't know.

Because not everyone subscribes to your belief system around racism - academic critical race theory based - thankfully. Others hold their own, less divisive and punitive ideas about how to negotiate racial issues. You'd never know this was a free country with free thought, the way some people fully expect their ideas to take precedence as factual and the only correct way for Things To Be Done.

Perhaps PH could start that off for apologising publicly for repeatedly racially abusing his colleagues - calling them P*kis and Ragheads - which he filmed.

He spoke about his personal learning after the Nazi incident in the doc following going to Berlin and talking to the chief rabbi which is a lie and disingenuous as he went on to racially abuse his colleagues after that and has swerved the opportunity to apologise over the past 13 years.

When I have brought this up on these threads M&H stans have been race apologists by saying he was only young ….!

Not one of the stans is prepared to step up.

Just my thoughts.

Meghan identifies as being black. And people are constantly disrespecting her by calling her a 'person of colour'.

Meghan Markle wrote this piece (which I thought was very good) in 2015 for Elle.

www.elle.com/uk/life-and-culture/news/a26855/more-than-an-other/

In it she refers to herself variously as 'biracial', 'mixed race', and 'mixed heritage' and explains her feelings and experiences around being 'half black and half white' [her words]. It's not a long article and I think it's worth reading. She's a good writer.

LondonWolf · 11/12/2022 12:39

And I am bored to back teeth with being told I was manipulated by the racist press into disliking Meghan. I don't read the tabloid press. I liked her and was excited by her joining the BRF until I sat down and watched the engagement interview. The doe eyed gazes at Harry, so affected and screaming acting. I couldn't get past ten minutes. I still went to Kensington Gardens with friends and family on the wedding day and toasted them with champagne. Hardly gave them another thought until the OW interview. Stop projecting your poisonous ideas around race onto everyone else. I fully respect your right to hold those ideas and I will thank you to respect my right to not to!
