Can we now agree the press coverage about MM was racist?

Only comment if you've seen the Harry and Meghan documentary because only in that programme did I become aware of the headlines.

If you've seen this programme specifically the images of some of the headlines and STILL don't think some of the press coverage was racist then quite frankly you're part of the problem.

I quote, she has 'exotic DNA', Harry marries a ''gangstar' and 'she is from Crenshaw where they have xxx crime rates last year' (she wasn't even from Crenshaw), 'straight outta Compton'

Seriously, do you seriously think this would have been said about a blonde hair blue eyed women?

For the record, I'm not a H&M fan at all - you don't have to like them to see that the headlines were racist, why can't brits just admit and agree on this?

I think racism was a factor. But also xenophobia, and sensationalist news. The papers are horrible to pretty much everyone.

I think we can probably agree that M&H left the RF and the UK for California not because of racism but because they were unwilling to accept not being centre stage here (Spare), and wanted to be free to capitalise financially on their RF associations in any way they saw fit.

No I do not agree with this at all

I keep seeing people saying that MM is calling Britain racist, my recollection is that she hasn’t . Had she done so my response likely would have been ‘no shit Sherlock’ . Many will say how dare I say that. I dare to do so following 50+ years of being a black mixed race British woman in this country.

I do so having experienced and continuing to experience my own children live this too

My 7 year old already understanding the micro aggressions of having her hair touched to single her out as other. Also having it being described as like a mop ti clean a floor with. ( and oh how the woman who did this cried that she wasn’t being racists and her fellow friends and colleagues sought to back her up and dismiss the very idea she is racist)

Knowing that a mumsnet thread asking at what age peoples kids were when they had the ‘Talk’ meant something so so different to the talk I was imagining ( sons especially on how to react when not if stopped by police)

Am I then surprised that so much of the tabloid media expressed this racism. No ! Obviously they also believe they have an audience to whom it is acceptable.

People have said on numerous threads how tolerant we are as a country. Excuse me I reject any notion that I and my children should somehow be tolerated.

What MM experienced and continues to do so at the hands of MSM is not explained away by her actions or words. That is not to say she is perfect but just that she is human, yet it seems she is not allowed to make errors and anything she says and does must be twisted by the media to suit their own agenda.

Great post

Meghan Markle wrote this piece (which I thought was very good) in 2015 for Elle.

www.elle.com/uk/life-and-culture/news/a26855/more-than-an-other/

In it she refers to herself variously as 'biracial', 'mixed race', and 'mixed heritage' and explains her feelings and experiences around being 'half black and half white' [her words]. It's not a long article and I think it's worth reading. She's a good writer.

Meghan has always identified as biracial. She has written about it on several occasions.
I have read that piece in Elle which as you say was well written. She is a very intelligent woman
