Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

@onlylarkin but don’t you find it a bit odd to post a photo of the Invictus games ceremony linked to a remembrance theme? When I first saw the photo and remembrance headline, I assumed it was taken at an actual ceremony of remembrance. Many people must have thought the same 🤷‍♀️

I did not think it was strange at all. Since they did not do a public remembrance day this year, they chose a photo that showed them at a different time support troops.

There were clues as to this not being a remembrance day event.

Not even Meghan would wear white to a remembrance day ceremony. And she never has. Always black.

After my critical thinking skills kicked in, I did a quick search to find when this photo was actually taken. Then confirmed her suit was what she wore at the games in The Hague.

When people then swore there was snow photoshopped into the image, a simple search for other photos from the same ceremony proved that was not wrong.

People will literally believe anything bad about M & H because of who they are. It is a scary thought because what else are people believing? I wonder sometimes if the DM are brainwashing people.

Ohnonevermind · 15/11/2022 23:00

They clearly went through their stack of appearances and this was the best they could manage with a bit of filter and photoshop.

the one they did with their own wreath was too duke and duchess of Windsor to use again.

So you are not happy with anything about them then? I wonder why you put yourself through reading and posting about them day after day.

MarshaMelrose · 15/11/2022 23:07

And yet here you are believing something that is not true without digging deeper.

I should dig deeper, you're correct.

The photo was taken on April 15, 2022 in The Hague at the US Embassy reception. The low overnight was 40F. It was cold enough that Meghan gave her coat to a mother with a baby. So no, not a summer photo.

April 15th in London was 73F. We had a very warm spell. Holland has very similar weather to us. Even 60F is not cold. None of the ladies or men on the front row had coats on, other than MM. And even she wasn't wearing it properly. So it was a warm spring day.

There is no snow photoshopped into the Archewell photo. It is likely a filter that blurred the background, but you can still see the ornamental grass and flowers behind the group of people.

I never said there was snow.

It is just washed out more in the sepia photo.

That was the point, wasn't it. They took a photo of a warm spring day and made it look like a bleak November day by leeching out the colour and making the trees look white and snowy. Then they wrote over the top of it "Remembrance Day" What conclusion could you draw other than that was taken on Remembrance Day?

I don't think it matters that much. Other than whenever they post pictures in future, just like with the polo award the team were presented with before they'd actually won, the public will question more and more the authenticity of their output. But then, really, it's their website so their truth, I guess. Even if facts do vary.

Ohnonevermind · 15/11/2022 23:13

@MarshaMelrose

so true, all those people in t-shirts didn’t seem cold from the photos on the day 🤣🙄🤣🤣

It’s all smoke and mirrors like the Polo ceremony

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/11/2022 23:19

Since they did not do a public remembrance day this year, they chose a photo that showed them at a different time support troops

But why bother at all? Even on here I didn't see anyone ask what H&M were doing for Remambrance Day this year, and though Harry did go to the Arizona memorial I'm not sure it would have been noticed too much if they'd posted nothing

Obviously it's their choice to make, but it did seem a shame to pick something that invites cries of "Fakers!!", when as said a different image or even just a couple of sentences would have done the job just as well

onlylarkin · 15/11/2022 23:25

Sigh.

In the morning, when this ceremony took place, it wad about 40F. That was cold. As the day warmed into the 60s, the coats were removed.

Meghan is from California. 40F is cold to her. It may not have been cold to people who live in The Hague.

In fact, it was cold enough that morning that Meghan gave her to coat a mom.with a baby to keep her warm.

I am used to the cold. When I go somewhere warm in the winter, I wear different clothing than the locals do.

There are many reasons why someone would release a black and white or special photo. When I take photos, I prefer the texture that comes through when a photo is deviod of color. It illicits a different emotional response.

Color can take away from the subject matter. The sepia photo caused the wording overlayed to pop. The message of remembrance day did not have to compete with the image due to the lack of color.

And really, who cares what photo they post?

People complained that they staged photo ops previously. So they did not. If they posted nothing at all, MN would be up in arms because they ignored Remembrance Day and Harry is a veteran.

I actually respect people who are honest and say, I just don't like them so nothing they do will ever be good enough. Instead, people look for every reason they can to hate. And when there is nothing, they make shit up. Like fucking snow in a photo. (I know not you but others did)

onlylarkin · 15/11/2022 23:28

@Puzzledandpissedoff we cross posted but I answered your question.

If they had done nothing, people would have been up in arms because he is a veteran and is ignoring remembrance day.

Harry spent 10 years in the military and did 2 tours in Afghanistan. Why WOULDNT he post? I am starting to wonder if military service in the UK is not as honored as it is in the US.

MarshaMelrose · 15/11/2022 23:33

In the morning, when this ceremony took place, it wad about 40F. That was cold.

40F is 4C which is just above freezing. That's cold even for us hardened North Europeans. No one would venture out in 4C without a warm coat. There's no way that woman at the end was in a dress in 4C in The Netherlands. 😂😂

onlylarkin · 15/11/2022 23:43

@MarshaMelrose And yet these she is, at the ceremony in the cold. With no coat.

And here is the official temps for that day.

Here is the hour by hour temp. So even at 9 am, it was a mere 45F out there.

We use Celsius in Europe.

onlylarkin · 15/11/2022 23:49

@Ohnonevermind Yea I know, I am not stupid. And there are posters from all over the world, some of which use F. If you cant figure it out, maybe this will help?

www.metric-conversions.org/temperature/celsius-to-fahrenheit.htm

Ohnonevermind · 15/11/2022 23:50

Googling the App weatherspark, it’s not considered to be particularly accurate judging by some reviews.

I’d use my eyes, the woman at the end in a dress hasn’t turned blue and hypothermic and seems quite happy

Ohnonevermind · 15/11/2022 23:52

How wonderfully helpful you are @onlylarkin
how would we manage without your weather insights 👏

onlylarkin · 16/11/2022 00:08

Did I touch a nerve?

You can think I am wrong all you want, but it is hard to not be accurate in PAST temps and they are in line with regular seasonal temps for that area.

Tons of other sites around that can confirm. You seem capable enough to look them up.

Ohnonevermind · 16/11/2022 00:16

Not at all @onlylarkin

Ohnonevermind · 16/11/2022 00:42

That website calls 18c cool 🤣 that’s an Irish summer.

It was closer to 10c at 9am rising to 15c - that’s not ‘freezing’ you plucked a temp from 1am - they weren’t standing in ceremony then 🙄 according to the website ( converted to Celsius for the rest of us)

I’m absolutely no fan of Harry and Meghan but I feel there’s a bit of over thinking going on.
It was just a suitable photo to demonstrate they are remembering the troops. Old photo redone in sepia just to make it more sober and fitting.
I can’t see it’s a deliberate attempt to fool anyone. They get loads of flack when they make a big deal out of Remembrance Sunday so they didn’t.

Bazinga007 · 16/11/2022 01:15

It's a phenomenon that he has a book out that isn't a colouring book. Thankfully he has a ghostwriter because he can hardly read and write and has the charisma of a turnip. At least at last he is finally trying to earn some money, his mummy's money must have run out. Good on him for getting his first proper job in his late thirties I don't count being a pretend soldier as a job.

onlylarkin · 16/11/2022 01:50

My post at 23:45 said it was 45F at 9 am.

45 degrees is chilly but doable in the sun with a coat.

Morestrangethings · 16/11/2022 03:56

I’ve watched people make quite nasty put downs in regard to Harry and Meghan. I’ve watched people egg each other on to compete with increasingly nastier criticisms. I’ve seen people, laughing at Meghan &Harry as if they’ve actually done all the stuff, of which so much has been made up.

And when someone disproves something that’s been said, rarely do the people who said it, or those who have laughed about it, own up to their bad take.

The emoji of ‘laughing-so-hard-I-am-crying’ is woefully overused on these royal threads. Rarely have I seen anyone on these threads who give themselves two or three or even four of those emojis in one post, say anything funny enough to think they are that witty.

Wishing people ill (they’ll be divorced in three years) and laughing , hoping people do something so they can have a laugh, hoping that someone will come a cropper so they can have a laugh. The nasty crystal ball predictions followed by laughter. There is so much delight taken in things that have not occurred,
and/or probably will not occur.

I am often left thinking that at least some of these, (often exaggerated), criticisms of Meghan and Harry are not posts made by adult women, but rather by some 13 year old girls, rocked by hormones and puberty, going through a mean girls stage. Which would explain to me, why a pp questioned the critical thinking skills of some posters here. 13 year old teenage girls, often at the mercy of hormones, don’t always make good critical thinkers.,

Roussette · 16/11/2022 04:26

Moreatrngethings

Never a truer word spoken. Especially the egging each other on bit and your post is very apt given the one at 01.15.

I imagine some of these posters would laugh hysterically at seeing someone fall over or trip up. As opposed to thinking...oh dear I hope that person is ok, they seem a bit shaky.

Roussette · 16/11/2022 04:41

Sorry spelt name wrong @Morestrangethings
😊

Unfortunately use of that particular emoji has proliferated throughout the whole of the MN site, from all sides of most debates and arguments.

I don’t like it personally, but it’s part and parcel of MN now it would appear. A feature not a bug, as they say.
