Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

They probably will not but I wouldn't be surprised to see them doing book reviews before it's published. The royal experts have been known to partake in similar 😂

BlueRidge · 27/10/2022 15:03

Absolutely will NOT be buying it.

Me neither .

jazzybelle · 27/10/2022 15:12

Why would anyone spend money on this book? It will be serialised and discussed everywhere. So, there's absolutely no need to buy it.

Ladytreacle · 27/10/2022 15:54

If it is serialised there will almost certainly be a word limit that will be adhered to.

Samcro · 27/10/2022 15:56

3 threads about this book, gotta lol he got the title right as it got people advertising the book.

Grrrpredictivetex · 27/10/2022 16:21

Will they be doing the rounds on chat shows to publicise it do you think?

Ladytreacle · 27/10/2022 19:44

@Coucous PRE-ORDER details: To pre-order your copy of Spare

Legrandsophie · 27/10/2022 19:59

I think it is tremendously sad that it has come to this. But I think the same thing about all tell all memoirs- someone always gets burned by them.

I find them all incredibly self centred and unfair- see especially the Elton autobiog. All those details about the woman he married that were so personal. At least she had the ability to give interviews to say how mortifying it was for her.

I will never understand why people do it.

daretodenim · 27/10/2022 20:10

He's got/getting £20 million for this as an advance. Then what? (I don't know how publishing works).

And while it sounds a lot and it is to me, it's far less to him. Then there's Netflix. And after these two "exposés" then what? What is there left to tell?

I'm failing to see how this is setting them up for life, when they live such costly lives. And I'm failing to see the business side of this for them going forward. Am I underestimating their financial situation vs income here?

PreparationPreparationPrep · 27/10/2022 20:19

I wonder why people concern themselves with their income and whether or not they will run out of cash Orr ideas. This has been going round MN now since they left the UK. Whether or not you like what they do for their money. They are obviously not short on ideas and probably have plans a few years ahead/ as well as investments just like any other high profile multi millionaires.

Well I guess I'm that "people". Your post has an, umm, interesting tone...

But what's wrong with wondering about their business model, or any other part of their public life - which they most definitely have, because they're putting their life in the public domain? Sure they have investments (I would hope!!) and as they're human, I'd also assume they have plans. But their business so far (not what's reported in the papers, but what they do) is entirely built on a) being royal/not-royal and b) having lived through and surviving, if not thriving after, more hardships than we could imagine.

This book appears to be about to make one of those two streams of income obsolete, albeit with a seemingly large advance. As PH is actively making himself a public figure based on those two focuses, it's entirely reasonable to wonder how this model works.

I'm not expecting anybody on Mumsnet to have the answer, however, there are quite a few sharp minds on here who have different insights than me and I enjoy hearing them. They usually aren't condescending about it either.

Can't wait to read it!

Yeah, but he will still keep calling himself Prince and Duke. And profit from it too. Ask the Duchess. So if he had wanted to quit, he can quit truly and drop everything. But hey they needed to have access to "pitch"

milti · 27/10/2022 22:14

Funny time to market a book - let’s hope for their sake it sells
more than The Bench - you make by heart go pump pump 😂ffs

pastypirate · 27/10/2022 22:25

Can't stand royalism. Can't wait to read this. I love Meghan.

ginghamstarfish · 27/10/2022 22:31

Clearly it will earn its advance as every journalist will buy a copy so they can write about it. Can't imagine many ordinary folks wanting to read this self indulgent whingers.

Roussette · 27/10/2022 22:35

Going to read it and the title made me laugh.
I am just imagining the complete meltdowns on MN,the numerous threads, the total outrage, the bunfights, the deleted posts, I doubt MN will survive to be honest!

headstone · 27/10/2022 22:40

I think you are going to be very busy on here Roussette come January. I’d book some annual
leave.

Exploiting his privileged birth for more privilege. I know some proceeds are going to charity but literally every penny from the book, from the interviews, from every bit of merch and marketing should. He didn’t get choose to be Royal. The huge gains should go back to the people that the Royals represent.

ShamedBySiri · 27/10/2022 22:44

Anyone else think the cover is meant to remind us (? subliminally) of his heroics in Afghanistan ? (I don't dismiss at all that he served there and all the dangers he faced etc, I admired him very much back in his soldiering days). With the brown T-shirt, similar to his army wear, and the sandy background colour.

Nah, can't be arsed to swim amongst the haters and all their nonsense and meltdowns.

I do find the absolute outrage already about just the title of the book really funny though. Gawd knows what it'll be like come January 😂

I hope he's fair to William and Charles as they can't respond publicly to any of Harry's allegations.
