Who will be watching it?

You'd have to have lived in a cave not to know who Diana was, of course younger adults knew who she was.

The crown needs to show balance, but we all know they won't. Diana was the victim, the rf the villains seems to be their theme.

Do you have teenagers? I do. Many do not know who she was or have only very vaguely heard of her.

I have teenage DGC and they know who about Diana .

FayeGovan · 18/10/2022 10:16

I started watching this and im gutted they didnt keep claire foy all the way through and aged her usung make up etc. Olivia Coleman is awful, the queen seems to be in a permanent sulk. Not regal at all. Claire foy got it much better.

Readinginthesun · 18/10/2022 10:16

Sorry ( can’t find glasses !) they know all about Diana .

LookingAtYou · 18/10/2022 10:29

'Do you have teenagers? I do. Many do not know who she was or have only very vaguely heard of her.'

Course they do. She was know globally, I bet teens in Australia know who she is. Perhaps your kids don't tend to watch the tv or read papers but many do and she is still often mentioned from conspiracy theories to interviews and documentaries.

The crown seems to have a very anti rf agenda I'm really surprised they get away with all the mudslinging they do. Oh but it's a drama, except every scene is an identical copy of what actually occurred from outfits to hairdos.

LookingAtYou · 18/10/2022 10:30

'Olivia Coleman is awful'

Yes she just played a grumpy cow which we are told she certainly wasn't, apparently she was very warm and funny.

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 10:39

I actually laughed at the idea of teenagers in Britain reading newspapers. I can tell you do not have teenagers. My teenagers think it is hilarious that DP still pays for a newspaper.

And the Crown was very favourable to the Royal Family in many stories, it could have been much worse. None of the rumours around Mountbatten and why he was targeted by the IRA over potential targets were even hinted at.
The Royal Family do not like the Crown because they like people to forget events.

I would imagine the RF don't like the crown because it is a load of people dressed up as them, impersonating them, recreating actual events but then throwing in made up offensive shit and then giggling behind their hands because oh it's a drama silly!

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 11:08

I disagree. Past filming and interviews seem to disappear off the internet. They want to rewrite history. Just as they sent out a list of scenes from the State Funeral that must never be broadcast again.

Just because your teenagers might not be interested in such news doesn’t mean all teenagers are the same !

Do they really find it hilarious? Ours are intelligent to understand that the Internet isn't everything.

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 11:13

Okay my teenagers are obviously thick then.
It is gentle family teasing.

'They want to rewrite history.'

True, the writers of the Crown do want to rewrite history. Most folk can see straight through their anti monarchy narrative.

Ohnonevermind · 18/10/2022 11:18

My kids are interested in current affairs, we’ve discussed the war in Ukraine, they sometimes watch HIGNFY, we chat about things at dinner. The radio is usually on.

i do screen some of it to be age appropriate.

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 11:22

We talk about news as well and watch HIGNFY and Question Time. All perfectly normal in a household interested in politics and current affairs.

This makes me laugh. You totally quoted me out of context and thus effectively lied about what I said. I was not talking about the Crown.
For the record, the Crown has been pretty gentle with the Royal Family portrayals. They could have been far harsher. As I said above they could have referred to far more damaging rumours that are referenced in MI5 files, but they did not.

For the record they haven't, they've been completey biased they've made the rf look like a bunch of uncaring fools. Obviously even the Crown's Take A Break style writers couldn't go so far as gossip about stuff in MI5 files. I presume they have a legal team with a line they can't overstep. Let's all laugh at Prince Philip's alleged affair (a matter of weeks after the queen's death) and previously the Queen making herself cry at Aberfan though. Just such tawdry nonsense. At least as Harry works for Netflix now them he may speak out. Lol.

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 12:16

Harry has nothing to do with this.
The death of the Queen has not been covered in the Crown so it is irrelevant to this discussion. Or do you mean nobody should be allowed to say anything bad about Philip after the Queen died?

Oh how very convenient. The people who give him his paycheck are writing a load of biased claptrap about his family but it's nothing to do with him! Grin.

Correct the Queen's death will not be covered in this series as it's the 90s and she died 2022, however my point was to suggest her beloved husband was having affairs is very distasteful and inappropriate. Anything for a quick buck though as Harry will agree.

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 12:39

I do not subscribe to the idea we should not speak the truth about famous people just because they have died.

Well, we don't know if it was true bevause it is a drama you see. Therefore to make up crap for entertainment on a show that has the actors impersonating the royal family is beyond bad taste.

Yes we don't have to watch it, but there are clips and comments on TV. They need to stick to known facts or stop copying every mannerism of the the rf and then say it's a drama. Make your minds up Netflix!

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 12:48

@LookingAtYou My reply to you was based on a comment made by you that had nothing to do with the Crown as it happened after the Queen died. You are mixing up a whole lot of things here and jumping around all over the place.

There were rumours about Prince Phillip that pre date The Crown. And I think they have portrayed him in a sympathetic light, as a complex individual, struggling to adapt to a role that wasn't easy for a man of the times.
The writers have certainly skirted over done of the incredibly rude things he said to people at times.
The Queen has been portrayed as a bit cold and distant at times - I think the writers in the Coleman series certainly lost any of wistful sense of loss that the Foy version of the Queen portrayed. I think it's been a mix of sympathetic and unsympathetic, showing monarchy as partly archaic, partly ridiculous, partly cruel, partly valuable.

ImAvingOops · 18/10/2022 14:23

Just my opinion but I think the writers would like us to believe their version is a good estimation of what really happened, but can't say so because they cannot prove it. Hence the close attention to detail such as costume and lack of emphasis on the 'dramatisation' in the credits.
