The next series will be starting on the 9th of November. Imelda Staunton will be playing the Queen. Tobias Menzies is playing Philip.

Historical events we’re likely to see in season 5 of The Crown:
Prince Andrew’s divorce
Princess Anne’s divorce
Windsor Castle fire
The separation/divorce of Prince Charles and Lady Diana
The Queen sues The Sun newspaper
The death of Princess Diana
Tony Blair becomes Prime Minister

Who will be watching it?

@antelopevalley
I think living rent and cost free on the Windsor Estate is pretty generous though, don't you think?

mummyh2016 · 10/10/2022 16:30

Are we sure series 5 will cover Princess Diana's death and not series 6? I keep seeing photos in the press of the new Diana actress filming scenes - surely she wouldn't be in series 6?

And Hilary Mantel was very careful to stick to the historical record of actual events we know about.

This!
And ex-Prime Minister have written about their conversations with the Queen.

As I said the Crown actually avoided anything that was simply rumoured e.g. about Mountbatten. It did stick to historical events.

And in the next series, the writers have both Charles and Diana's long televised interviews and the recorded tapes to use. So in some cases, they do have exact conversations.

The media said the Royal Family had made that request.

What 'media'? The only thing I can find is that the then Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden made a request that a 'fiction' disclaimer be added at the start of each episode, but I've not seen anything about the royals themselves make such a request.

Have you got a link?

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 16:34

@wherearebeefandonioncrisps It is. But the money Sarah has had has depended on the Queen's gifts. She had a right to a decent divorce which could have meant she stayed close to the Royal Family or went her own way and never saw then again.

Neither of those articles refers to a request from the royal family to have a disclaimer added to 'The Crown'.

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 16:44

@antelopevalley

A quote from the variety article
“We have always presented The Crown as a drama and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events,” the statement read, according to The Guardian. “As a result, we have no plans, and see no need, to add a disclaimer.” From Netflix

so you understand it’s a work of fiction ?

the others article quote ‘sources close to KC’ according to Yahoo (which are pretty useless at the best of times) so I’d never mind them

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 16:49

They are saying conversations etc are made up. We all know that. It is based on historical events. We also all know that.

i do vaguely remember Sarah’s daughters looking on at the toe sucking which lost her a lot of support, and weakened her hand in the divorce

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 16:54

‘Broadly based’ means artistic license 🤣

Rainallnight · 10/10/2022 16:56

Ooh, thanks for the reminder, OP! Cannot wait. Didn’t know it was coming round so soon.

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 15:59

It is pretty factual though. In fact it is kinder than it could have been e.g. Mountbatten.

But what of characters like Venetia?

this thread should be moved.

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 17:13

It is beautifully shot and the costumes and locations are amazing.

I’ve not liked all the casting though

I know it did. But a divorce settlement should not be based on whether you have an affair.

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 17:18

I have not liked all the casting either. I loved Claire Foy though, she was brilliant.

jeffgoldblum · 10/10/2022 17:20

Affairs are fine for everyone but Charles then ?

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 17:21

Affairs are never okay. But if Charles had no money and Diana was wealthy, his affair should not lead to a rubbish divorce settlement.

Ooh what casting have you not liked? I’ve never seen the crown but I know of most of those actors - seen many of the main players on stage - and love discussing casting.

@mummyh2016 Season 5 is the last season

@mummyh2016 Season 5 is the last season

No, there will be one more.

jeffgoldblum · 10/10/2022 17:41

You are aware all these people were.. are wealthy?
None of them were ' commoners'!
Their idea of ' skint ' , is worlds away from the average poster on this board , I mean poor Sarah only a couple million! . And I like fergie but really the double standards get up my nose!

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 17:41

@RandomPenguinHouse

i loved Claire Foy, but not Olivia Coleman (who is a wonderful actress though

jeffgoldblum · 10/10/2022 17:43

@RandomPenguinHouse ,@Ohnonevermind , the first season was the only one I watched, Claire foy was outstanding but I couldn't stand Matt smith ( in this or doctor who!) and I found it outrageous that she got paid less than him when she was playing "the Queen "!
