What’s likely to be cancelled?

Do I bother travelling 10 hours this weekend (5 hours each way) to take dc to a fairly niche sporting event? It’s the national championship. How likely do you think it is that it’ll be cancelled following the death of the Queen? I need to leave by midday tomorrow.

Rugby Union has just confirmed tonight’s matches postponed, tomorrows Premiership matches go ahead as scheduled, black armbands, 1minute silence and national anthem.

Even though all football up till and including Monday is cancelled, test match cricket resumes tomorrow.

Bickles · 09/09/2022 16:31

Radio 2 Live in Leeds cancelled.
Personally I really liked and respected the Queen. She worked hard her whole life. She seemed like a sensible old lady and I don’t think she would have wanted life to stop for a fortnight.
I would like to know who is going to foot the bill? What about all the businesses who will be affected by these cancellations? Will they be reimbursed by the crown?

Zampa · 09/09/2022 16:39

Yes, just got my email about the cancellation @Bickles. I don't want to tell my kids ...

Bickles · 09/09/2022 16:54

DS is really upset too. They have lived through so many cancellations due to Covid it seems really wrong to cancel anything else.

Not surprisingly, Buckingham Palace is rather suggesting that everything should carry on. Which will come as a disappointment to the virtue signallers everywhere ("mark of respect" my arse - these are probably the same people who were paid to bake banana bread during Lockdown). I am in favour of the RF, btw, but not in favour of being told how to think or what to do.

They've cancelled Last Night of The Proms which is quite sad imo. I think she would have liked to end as planned. :(

Not just the Last Night but the last three concerts out of 72, including two appearances by the Philadelphia Orchestra who had obviously already arrived. In the past (9/11, death of Princess Diana) programmes have been modified at short notice so something appropriate could have been arranged, you'd imagine.

lightisnotwhite · 09/09/2022 22:49

It’s not “ virtue signalling” it a once in a lifetime event. The likes of Queen Elizabeth will never be seen again.l The monarchy will be gone in another 70 years.

An .actual born real women doing a job for 70 years without her breasts , bottom or weight coming into it. Working until two days before she died. That’s unheard of!.

Shes was immense,. We should all recognise her .Nails.through and through.

A lot of businesses around here closed yesterday, as a mark of respect, fair enough, all are planning to open today. Some was/is virtue signaling, companies sending mass emails certainly is, personally I think the BBC and others broadcasting 24hours with the story is way over the top, there has been literally no other news for 2 days

I don't get why things are being cancelled as in my own circle nobody is very much bothered!
In my local city on Friday you really would not have known that the queen had died. I suppose it's different in London.

I thought it was absurd to cancel the Proms. At least the performers will have been paid anyway, and I assume ticketholders got a refund. I hope so, anyway. The Albert Hall and the BBC presumably have insurance cover - hope it covered this.

TheWheeledAvenger · 11/09/2022 13:44

I think it's awful. Two big performing arts and community festivals were cancelled where I live, meaning thousands of pounds of food will have to be thrown away, vendors have been left tens of thousands of pounds out of pocket, and hundreds of young dancers who had already paid for train tickets and hotel rooms will have a wasted journey and be denied the chance to perform.

I personally will be about £350 out of pocket due to the combination of cancelled work that I now won't be paid for and non-refundable travel costs. For a disabled person on a low income that is a lot of money.

Hackney Carnival was cancelled. How many people in Hackney care about or want to mourn the Queen? Forcing majority black events that hold significance to the black community to cancel against their will is a very bad look.

FourChimneys · 11/09/2022 14:05

A fun family charity event in my town has been cancelled today, apparently as "a mark of respect". The local Facebook page is angry, rightly so.
Bloody ridiculous virtue signalling.

The car boot sale went ahead though.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/09/2022 14:52

I wonder if some of the cancellations are because of police being redeployed to other duties, e.g. in London, controlling the crowds around Buckingham Palace?

I was very pleased our local parkrun went ahead, but there was no real reason for it not to. I gather the ones in Royal Parks were cancelled.

janj2301 · 11/09/2022 15:40

With 19th now being a bank holiday we are going to have to cancel a lot of our patients' nurses and doctors appointments, more swearing....

It is.

London is about to have heads of state from all over the world, royalty from all over the world and politicians all in the one place.

On top of that they’re going to have millions of people descending on the city as well.

Police and other security are going to be needed in London to manage it.

But other stuff will be needed to be redeployed as well - ambulances, cameras and sound equipment that would be elsewhere, portaloos and barriers. Loads of random stuff that will just have a knock on effect everywhere.
