What’s likely to be cancelled?

Do I bother travelling 10 hours this weekend (5 hours each way) to take dc to a fairly niche sporting event? It’s the national championship. How likely do you think it is that it’ll be cancelled following the death of the Queen? I need to leave by midday tomorrow.

They've cancelled Last Night of The Proms which is quite sad imo. I think she would have liked to end as planned. :(

Andypandy799 · 09/09/2022 08:13

Funeral will be a bank holiday so schools will be shut

I think the funeral will be Monday so you may have dodged that bullet! Enjoy!

so few people have a grasp of the etiquette in this situation.
The Queen will lie in state before the funeral. It will be in about 10 days time, not on Monday.

I don’t think much will be cancelled. A lot of people are anti-monarchy, so it’s easier to say ‘she’d want you to carry on’ than have people protesting about things being cancelled.

I think it is better to deal with a bit of fall out for not cancelling, than cause financial hardship by cancelling, eg if people have booked hotels, travel etc.

But clearly many event managers/owners don't agree with me, as they're already cancelling!

Interestingly football matches weren't cancelled when George VI died.

Oh that's really silly. It would be a fantastic celebration of her life!

Nothing should be cancelled, it's ridiculous. People spend fucking months and years planning and preparing for these things. Especially a mass-participation event like the Great North Run. Just have a minute's silence at the start and get the fuck on with it.

They are just one off events though that come and go. The Queen has been Head of State for 70 years and the monarchy for a 1,000. Totally different.
She represented Britain and the country should do things differently at her death. Its disrespectful to carry on as if nothing happened.
If you don’t agree with the monarchy then campaign for a republic. Bet you won’t complain about things being cancelled when the parties for that happen.

The options for the funeral appear to be Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th and Monday 19th. I've seen many comments that it won't be on the Sunday. Monday would mean having an unscheduled Bank Holiday, I would imagine. Diana's funeral was on a Saturday, but that wasn't a state funeral. This is going to be massive and I wonder if they will go for the Monday to give them a bit of extra time for planning and preparation. Decision will be taken today, I believe.

I was very surprised they've cancelled the Last Night of the Proms.

I am told by my husband (keen runner) that the organisers of the Great North Run have cancelled the 5k event that was due to happen alongside the main run on Sunday. I don't know why. It would be a massive disappointment for participants if the main run were to be cancelled. A half-marathon requires months of training and as others have said there's a huge amount of charity sponsorship riding on this. People travel to events like this from all over the country and further afield.

gatehouseoffleet · 09/09/2022 08:22

Travel/accommodation can be claimed on insurance

It's highly unlikely in this context.

silverclock222 · 09/09/2022 08:22

Shocked at the amount of cancellations and closures. It's very sad she has died but life goes on. I will still be working as I need my pay.

So you happy with people losing money and wages when people are already struggling.

It's possible to not want a republic, admire and grieve the queen and still want things to go ahead. These things are not mutually exclusive.

Absolutely

Nothing will be cancelled. It’s not Thailand.

I don't understand posts like this. Things will be cancelled and things already have been cancelled.

The Tour of Britain cycle race has been cancelled. This required big Police presence so I think it is for practical as well as respectful reasons.

I'm at the great north run on Sunday. Didn't really occur to me if it would be cancelled or not.

God I hope it's not going to be cancelled with all of the training and planning so many people will have put into it.

The whole process is tradition for centuries and the country is in a national state of mourning until the day of the funeral.

For all those saying we should carry on as normal show some respect ffs smh

Lots of things were tradition for centuries, but we live in more enlightened times now.

Where things require resources like the police that will now need to be deployed elsewhere, cancellation is understandable, but if that is not the case, I see no reason why sporting and other events shouldn't go ahead, as long as they can be done respectfully, eg with a silence beforehand and participants wearing black armbands.

coulditgetbetter2 · 09/09/2022 08:54

I'm enraged by the cancellations.

She's part of a political system that a lot of people don't agree with. And she wasn't exactly a saint - she worked to ensure she was exempted from over 160 laws including those on workers and animal rights and took great pains to guard her on wealth - which was made on the back of the people

"SudocremOnEverything
I really don’t think cancelling stuff is the thing to do. Have an announcement and a minute silence at the start, but run the bloody great north run for your charity a

It's called respect"

It really isn't. It's actually incredibly disrespectful to the thousands of people who have trained for the event and to the charities who rely on these events to raise funds.

It's not, it says 'expected' it is not confirmed.

janj2301 · 09/09/2022 09:07

they've cancelled the Proms, I'm not going but I think that's over the top as it's quite a "nationel event" with lots of patriotic stiring music and I'm sure queenie wouldn't approve of it being cancelled

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 09/09/2022 09:08

Many many countries have periods of mourning where things change and close . Traditions take over and protocols are followed. It’s hardly just the U.K. Most of us only know the Queen on the throne and have never experienced this kind of ‘mourning period’. It’s not comparable to princess Diana or Philip as it’s the actual Queen. It’s a big deal.

I’m not saying I agree with it and things closing or being cancelled but many will be following protocols. Some may be acting in haste on their own instead of waiting for official word though.

AssumingDirectControl · 09/09/2022 09:10

I’d be surprised if the Queen herself would have wanted cancellation of things like the Proms and horse racing. Better surely to include a celebration of her life and a tribute to her throughout the day.

lightisnotwhite · 09/09/2022 09:12

So you happy with people losing money and wages when people are already struggling.
The balance of people losing a days wages against those who will get a paid day off is unknowable. Plus many events will be rescheduled ,plus many jobs are created by the organising of a state funeral and everything else that goes with it.

They’d have to sing God Save The King now which might be a bit strange.
