What’s likely to be cancelled?

Do I bother travelling 10 hours this weekend (5 hours each way) to take dc to a fairly niche sporting event? It’s the national championship. How likely do you think it is that it’ll be cancelled following the death of the Queen? I need to leave by midday tomorrow.

Dh said League football matches were cancelled when Diana died so expecting them to be this weekend

Wondering about grass roots 🤔

We saw a message on our local grassroots football page which has suggested cancellations.

Nothing should be cancelled, it's ridiculous. People spend fucking months and years planning and preparing for these things. Especially a mass-participation event like the Great North Run. Just have a minute's silence at the start and get the fuck on with it.

Quite so.

I’d find it very sad if the Great North Run is cancelled, it’s such a big deal to charities who are already having a very tough time.

I personally think a two minute silence bay most events would do the job, it seems a ludicrous waste of time and money to cancel them.

The Queen always seemed really practical, I doubt she’d have wanted events cancelled.

I suspect that they will have to consider that many police and military personnel that are required to manage a large event like this may need to be redeployed to London / Scotland / wherever they're rehearsing for the funeral etc.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 09/09/2022 07:20

Nothing will be cancelled. It’s not Thailand.

Legoland is closed

Well, that sums up exactly what I think of Legoland. How utterly self-indulgent of them.

Yeah right. It’s a nice sentiment but I doubt the Queen would be that bothered.

vera99 · 09/09/2022 07:26

Mass cancellations are more likely to annoy a vast swathe of the public and cause some serious financial costs. Respect where respect is due but it would be ridiculous to do more. This is 2022, not 1952.

GreenGreenGrass23 · 09/09/2022 07:26

All our junior league football games have been cancelled this weekend (U13s)

There will be some inevitable changes at Heathrow and Gatwick as all the royal dignitaries and heads of state from around the world arrive and leave for the funeral.

I wouldn't be worrying overly about the effects of VIPs inbound on normal traffic at LHR/LGW TBH...

Some HoS are happy to fly commercial, there are also biz jet/exec jet slots (and parking space) at both airports and other airports are available both for biz jets (e.g. Farnborough, Northolt) and heavier stuff (e.g. Stansted, potentially Mildenhall for any US heavy hitters).

Agreed. I was never a royals fan and yes it is a shame and sad news. But this is going to now be in the news for months and cancelling things etc is ludicrous.

Calmdown14 · 09/09/2022 07:28

I think most things will carry on. It's the more practical considerations around policing (so football requires big resources) and anything on the route she will travel which will have an impact.

I think Legoland is closed because of it's location. It will have been considered long in advance whether people squealing on rollercoasters is a suitable backdrop to a focal point for mourning.

The Entertainer has Christian values and doesn't open Sundays either so different to most retail.

The funeral will be different

BiddyPop · 09/09/2022 07:31

I believe all hockey matches in Ulster are off at least this weekend.

Invisiblewoman75 · 09/09/2022 07:31

Hopefully medical appointments will still go ahead.

Lovemusic33 · 09/09/2022 07:32

I think most big sporting events will be cancelled for ten days and for the funeral but most other events will go ahead?

I had a email form DD’s college to say they won’t be closing but may be told to close for the funeral. I don’t think schools should close today. Kids are just settling back in after the holidays and have had enough time off during covid but I fully respect closures for the funeral as it’s something a lot of children will want to watch (it will be a big part of history).

Our local brewery has closed all its pubs tomorrow. Back open Saturday

I hope ours hasn't, I'm supposed to be meeting friends for lunch later.

There's nothing on their website about closing today.

Rae36 · 09/09/2022 07:33

Heading to London from Edinburgh this weekend for a kids sports event with participants from all over the UK. Can't see it being cancelled because so many sports clubs will have paid money for travel and accommodation. But I wouldn't be sad if it was, I suspect getting around London will be a bit of a nightmare this weekend.

runningpink · 09/09/2022 07:35

My flight is in Scotland so hopefully won’t be affected then and it’s really early in the morning so definitely wouldn’t clash with any funeral times.

Why didn’t the Queen make it clear that she wouldn’t want xyz cancelled when all the planning was happening.
Especially since everything has been planned for so long. And also having to wait for confirmed updates on funeral etc when it’s all pre planned is just adding to folks stress levels.

If want to mourn and not do your planned stuff then do that but those of us who want to continue our lives as normal should also be allowed to do so.

ifonly4 · 09/09/2022 07:37

I don't think many businesses will want to close for the day, and as mentioned transport and hospitality will be affected if events don't go ahead - we've had very sad news, but financially businesses and people are struggling, and every day of work counts. I'm totally up for places showing their respect though.

Have tickets for Radio 2 live in Leeds on 17th. I wonder if that will go ahead?

Us too.

I'm pretty sure that as it's a BBC event immediately before the funeral, it will be cancelled. I don't think any other concert or festival would be though.

JustJustWhy · 09/09/2022 07:41

Both big money radio contests suspended today...for those who look forward to that little bit of hope every weekday!

Againstmachine · 09/09/2022 07:41

Many people on zero hours contracts lose money if events are cancelled and could mean difference between eating or not, so no events shouldn't be cancelled.

The GNR shouldn't be cancelled people have trained got sponsorship and booked travel, hotels, and you will only have to put it on at a later date.

There has been enough cancellations and closures over past few years that we shouldn't be shutting/stopping things.

LakieLady · 09/09/2022 07:42

1994girl · 09/09/2022 07:28

I agree. It's sad, but life needs to go on, ffs.

I was rather amused by the Royal Mail cancelling their strike.

RaininSummer · 09/09/2022 07:42

I find all this cancelling stuff quite ridiculous. A show of respect for the queen at the start of anything would be nice but it isn't fair to cancel things people have worked for, planned for and saved for. If people individually want to take a day off that's their business alone but I can't imagine many people do.

CrabbitBastard · 09/09/2022 07:46

I have a hotel on the funeral route the week the funeral will take place so I'm worried they will cancel my booking to get more money from funeral attendees, and that roads will still be closed. I'm travelling to London on Tuesday. Does anyone from London remember how soon the roads re-opened etc after Diana and the QM funerals?

Infinisplittive · 09/09/2022 07:47

Is it just me, or is there a bit of a sense of irony with people and organisations lauding HMQ’s commitment and NOT cancelling things, but at the same time cancelling things themselves?
