What’s likely to be cancelled?

Do I bother travelling 10 hours this weekend (5 hours each way) to take dc to a fairly niche sporting event? It’s the national championship. How likely do you think it is that it’ll be cancelled following the death of the Queen? I need to leave by midday tomorrow.

A lot seems to be being cancelled, we will know more today, I’m particularly irritated because we are/were travelling to a match and have booked a hotel for a couple of nights. If it is cancelled lots of other places will be closed too, so no point in going, it’s going to be £200 down the spout.
Fingers crossed.

For some events, there are challenges if they require policing support, when some of the personnel need to be rediverted for support to the funeral arrangements etc. I understand that was one of the issues with the cycling - it needs support from police motorbike riders, who are being redeployed.

Grassroots events shouldn't have that sort of issue though.

Is it just me, or is there a bit of a sense of irony with people and organisations lauding HMQ’s commitment and NOT cancelling things, but at the same time cancelling things themselves?

Yes absolutely.

Keep calm and carry on is not what we are seeing atm.

FourChimneys · 09/09/2022 07:52

Completely bonkers to cancel things. Plenty of people rely on events to make a living. There is already a complete overreaction and I fear it will get worse.

I am running a small event today. Certainly not even considering cancelling it. If someone chooses not to come that's fine but they won't get a refund.

loves2plan · 09/09/2022 07:54

If events like GNR are cancelled, it will be well out of the organisers hands. I imagine they won't take the decision lightly but the country is in a state of national mourning. It is unprecedented.

A lot of the money already raised for charity will still go to them and I'm sure people will be able to defer their places as in 2020. Travel/accommodation can be claimed on insurance.

I suspect today they will announce that all the football fixtures this weekend will be cancelled too.

All racecourses have closed for the day. Husband is doing something with Cubs & Scouts this weekend, it's still on. She was patron and they said they felt best way to honour her was to carry on 👍

My son has a scouts event this weekend and I wondered if it would be ok with her being the patron.

Weepingwillows12 · 09/09/2022 07:56

Premiership rugby is announcing decisions on cancelling games today. BMW PGA golf suspended play for today but haven't cancelled the whole event I think. I think the big sports need to consider the policing etc but for grassroots its nicer to go ahead with a minute's silence. But who knows.

This is all bonkers!

If people feel they wish to change their plans because they are in mourning tor showing respect fair enough.

Cancelling things and closing businesses isn't necessary. Staff in many of these industries are often expected to work after a relative of their own dies- with brutal decisions made on what constitutes a 'close relative' as that entitles them to a day off and time for the funeral.

There's talk of weddings being forced to cancel and flights not taking off on some threads.

A

Well said.

Since Covid, 'cancelling' things has become not just acceptable but the knee-jerk reaction to pretty much anything.

Businesses are in danger of collapsing after the shit show of lockdown and now the energy price hikes; the last thing they need is yet another enforced closure.

People need to get on with it, just as the Queen would have done.

Does anyone know if flights are likely to be cancelled on the day of the funeral?

I have a holiday booked for next weekend and now panicking I won’t get away if the funeral/flights clash(Haven’t had a holiday in 7/8 years) I need this holiday, I’m on my knees and this is the only thing keeping me going.

I think the funeral will be Monday so you may have dodged that bullet! Enjoy!

justasking111 · 09/09/2022 07:59

The train strikes are cancelled

Haudyourwheesht · 09/09/2022 08:00

What nonsense. The economy is completely shot due to covid, brexit, Ukraine. We can't afford to shut everything down again. If people are willing to go out and keep the economy going they should be able to. Legoland??

Delphigirl · 09/09/2022 08:01

I had a table for 6 booked to celebrate DS’s birthday at the Ivy yesterday and they cancelled it with 40m notice as they were shutting “because of the Queen”. Kind of bizarre. It wasn’t even a London one, so it’s not as though it was Palace-traffic related. We went out for a curry instead which wasn’t exactly the plan.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 09/09/2022 08:02

I don't think anything should be cancelled. Do they do this as a mark of respect or thinking people won't go so they're preempting the fact? I feel life has to go on. She was a keep calm and carry on sort of person and we should honour that not shut up shop. Enough has been cancelled over the past two years, people want options.

I really like the Queen as well so I'm not coming from an anti monarchy viewpoint.

Infinisplittive · 09/09/2022 08:02

Legoland is one I do understand closing today, just because of it’s proximity to Windsor Castle and likely traffic issues, for staff and guests. Traffic is bad enough at the best of times.

TheGuv1982 · 09/09/2022 08:04

Waiting to see if Bristol Vs Bath is cancelled (rugby) tonight but I think events for Saturday & Sunday may well go ahead.

Haudyourwheesht · 09/09/2022 08:04

On a practical sense, senior football is on a tight timetable this year because of the World Cup, so I'd imagine they're reluctant to cancel as rescheduling will be tricky.

Change123today · 09/09/2022 08:05

When it was Diana funeral I worked in a dental surgery- we didn’t close and had appointments booked in on the Saturday morning. When I arrived the first patient turned up ..the rest all cancelled. I remember getting the bus home driving through town and how strangely quiet it was.
Why my boss was determined to open as he didn’t think anyone would cancel! (He wasn’t even working that day!)

Crazykatie · 09/09/2022 08:05

Most of us want to pay our respects, we will do that in our own way mass cancellations and closures causes massive disappointment and disruption, it’s not what the Queen would have wanted to be remembered for.

Its Political Correctness gone mad.

purplechaos · 09/09/2022 08:08

Train strikes are off, apparently!

Fiwere25again · 09/09/2022 08:09

SudocremOnEverything · 08/09/2022 22:04

I really don’t think cancelling stuff is the thing to do. Have an announcement and a minute silence at the start, but run the bloody great north run for your charity a

It's called respect

jessieminto · 09/09/2022 08:10

I'm waiting to find out the date of the funeral. 19th is DS 11+ exam and I can't see them going ahead with it during the funeral, but maybe they will still do it in the morning if the funeral is later that day?

Phos · 09/09/2022 08:11

freckles20 · 09/09/2022 07:52

Yes absolutely.

Keep calm and carry on is not what we are seeing atm.

It’s nothing to do with keep calm and carry on. It’s protocol in the official mourning period.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 09/09/2022 08:12

Fiwere25again · 09/09/2022 08:09

It's called respect

I think it's treating people like subjects. There's nothing disrespectful in what @SudocremOnEverything said.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 09/09/2022 08:12

Raindancer411 · 08/09/2022 22:57

Legoland is closed

It's what she would have wanted

Andypandy799 · 09/09/2022 08:12

The whole process is tradition for centuries and the country is in a national state of mourning until the day of the funeral.

For all those saying we should carry on as normal show some respect ffs smh
