What’s likely to be cancelled?

Do I bother travelling 10 hours this weekend (5 hours each way) to take dc to a fairly niche sporting event? It’s the national championship. How likely do you think it is that it’ll be cancelled following the death of the Queen? I need to leave by midday tomorrow.

People have paid hundreds of pounds on rail tickets, hotel rooms and match tickets. They really shouldn't be cancelled when you'll still be able to go to the cinema, theatre or restaurants. Sport is no different, they're all entertainment but it's always sport that has to somehow be cancelled, possibly because the people who make these decisions hate it so much.

Dh said League football matches were cancelled when Diana died so expecting them to be this weekend

Wondering about grass roots 🤔

My friend is a Class 1 grassroots referee. He says at the moment his match on Sunday is going ahead with a two minute silence.

Does anyone know if flights are likely to be cancelled on the day of the funeral?

I have a holiday booked for next weekend and now panicking I won’t get away if the funeral/flights clash(Haven’t had a holiday in 7/8 years) I need this holiday, I’m on my knees and this is the only thing keeping me going.

Bickles · 09/09/2022 04:16

Have tickets for Radio 2 live in Leeds on 17th. I wonder if that will go ahead?

freckles20 · 09/09/2022 04:19

This is all bonkers!

If people feel they wish to change their plans because they are in mourning tor showing respect fair enough.

Cancelling things and closing businesses isn't necessary. Staff in many of these industries are often expected to work after a relative of their own dies- with brutal decisions made on what constitutes a 'close relative' as that entitles them to a day off and time for the funeral.

There's talk of weddings being forced to cancel and flights not taking off on some threads.

Nothing should be cancelled, it's ridiculous. People spend fucking months and years planning and preparing for these things. Especially a mass-participation event like the Great North Run. Just have a minute's silence at the start and get the fuck on with it.

Rosehugger · 09/09/2022 04:32

Legoland is closed

Well, that sums up exactly what I think of Legoland. How utterly self-indulgent of them.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 09/09/2022 05:10

Do we know for sure what day the funeral is yet? There’ll be mass closures when that happens.

TwinkleChristmas · 09/09/2022 05:16

Legoland is closed

How touching. Putting their respect for the queen above their profits.

dylanthedragon · 09/09/2022 05:21

Legoland may be closed for practical reasons. I imagine there will be crowds at Windsor Castle.

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 09/09/2022 05:23

Royal Mail strike. Every cloud and all that.

Lego land is in Windsor, it wouldn’t be practical for it to be open

Completely agree!

Grassroots have left it to each organisation to decide from what I’ve been told

Fivemoreminutes1 · 09/09/2022 06:04

Selfridges will be shut today. Mercury Prize and Last Night of the Proms cancelled

RachelSq · 09/09/2022 06:14

I’d find it very sad if the Great North Run is cancelled, it’s such a big deal to charities who are already having a very tough time.

I personally think a two minute silence bay most events would do the job, it seems a ludicrous waste of time and money to cancel them.

The Queen always seemed really practical, I doubt she’d have wanted events cancelled.

Andypandy799 · 09/09/2022 06:22

I live in shields and the website says they will make an announcement later today if the gnr is cancelled

Cancelling all flights for the whole day would cause chaos, so I doubt it.

Some airports may put a short ban on engine starts and take-offs landings during any minutes silence that may be observed across the country.

Due to it's location Heathrow might be more effected, I suspect there they may perhaps have a short period(s) where movements into/out of Heathrow may be stopped and overflight of London banned....

FinanceLPlates · 09/09/2022 06:36

Actually Heathrow is an interesting case as there’s a flight path going right over Windsor Castle.

notaflyingmonkey · 09/09/2022 06:45

I live near Heathrow and they change the flight path for royal events at Windsor

MiniCooperLover · 09/09/2022 06:49

All racecourses have closed for the day. Husband is doing something with Cubs & Scouts this weekend, it's still on. She was patron and they said they felt best way to honour her was to carry on 👍

Fivemoreminutes1 · 09/09/2022 06:54

There will be some inevitable changes at Heathrow and Gatwick as all the royal dignitaries and heads of state from around the world arrive and leave for the funeral.

Actually Heathrow is an interesting case as there’s a flight path going right over Windsor Castle.

A lot will depend on the runways in use at Heathrow on the day.

As far as Windsor goes:

The departure routes off the western runways (27 left and Right) are permanently designed to avoid Windsor as best they can in the distance available.

Landing from west - east (on 09 L) you can't avoid Windsor and hence track just south of the castle so the best that can be done to protect anything there is a (hopefully short lived) complete arrivals ban.

FWIW I overflew the back end H&Ms wedding procession just after the arrival ban that applied to that event expired.

ThinWomansBrain · 09/09/2022 07:02

Even the campaign to Make Votes Matter has been suspended.🙄
I'd imagine a Venn diagram of people wanting a democratic voting system and not supporting the monarcy has a fairly big intersection.
