Hopefully Meghan has some new real material for her address next week.

"We are here to make changes for the better. Either you are with us, or get the f out of our way."

I think the influencer probably copied President George W. Bush saying ‘ you’re either for us or against us’ way back in 2001.

And we all know how that turned out.

erm, no. Don't think so. Did he say just leave us alone to get on with it?

Not the same thing.

Ohnonevermind · 03/09/2022 10:07

@notanotheroneagain

Did your kids not read the bench ?

skullbabe · 03/09/2022 10:08

@Roussette - I watched that video and it was so cute. I lol’d at the “coloniser” bit - deffo going to get some backs up. I also went and read the rest of the Twitter thread with the general chat about the video and why it was posted. An interesting tidbit was that the wedding was the first royal wedding to be televised in SA. And that most people were excited - some people had braais and some people had celebrations in pubs like that video.

Were people dancing in the street? Probably not but hearing those women with the same accents as my mother, aunts and cousins and knowing how they speak when they are being effusive again bolsters my suspicion with regards the Mandela comment.

Also Rousette - thank you for being a voice of reason on this topic for many years. There are any people on MN who lurk (like me until this week because I’m on AL) - you have consistently been thoughtful, measured and rational in your approach. 💐

Ohnonevermind · 03/09/2022 10:12

@skullbabe

It is lovely to see people celebrating - no one disagrees with that. Her wedding was celebrated by millions across the world

but she had to drag in Mandela’s name to try to elevate her status

and later say on the OW interview that the wedding was done for the millions and not for her and Harry

notanotheroneagain · 03/09/2022 10:13

I’m bored of this conversation now - who else listened the Mariah podcast? What are your thoughts?

I did listen to it and found them fun and light while also delving into serious subjects. They talked a bit about colourism. While some things like hair care would fly past the heads of others, it still an issue where I believe a law was passed recently ( a bone of contention for some people of colour, there was an issue with black students rioting over their rights about hair here in London not too long ago) so that was interesting.

After all the fleck she's been getting lately, I loved Mariah name dropping Oprah all over the place. She also talked about her legends ball.

They talked about how the word diva was viewed as positive, but later was used to tear down women.

I want to echo this. I disagree with Rousette on pretty much everything, but she is always very polite and measured and has a good humour. So I wlll always read what she has to say and consider it.

Is my stating I got married at a different date malicious

I didn't think Meghan's lies had generally been called "malicious", any more than it had been suggested that they mean she shouldn't be treated as a human being?

Someone once said (correctly) that with racism there's always another thing, and so it seems with desperate attempts to prove Meghan hasn't lied. Offer proof of one thing and instantly there's a "yes, but ..."

The person who asserts something needs to provide evidence

Does this also apply to Meghan, and if not why not?

skullbabe · 03/09/2022 10:19

themessygarden · 03/09/2022 07:52

Just to add, British expats were partying because it was a royal wedding, not because it was a mixed race woman marrying into the royal family, which was her insinuation by aligning it with Nelson Mandela and his walk to freedom.

However, people were rightly happy that Harry's wife to be was of mixed race, but the wedding parties would have happened no matter who he married.

Of course the British migrants were celebrating a royal wedding - it would have been odd if they didn’t.

Again Meghan did not compare herself to Mandela ffs.

The passport thing is so weird and obviously provably untrue. She travelled to New York for her huge (vulgar) baby shower with tonnes of A-list guests in 2019.

How did she get there without her passport?

Her Royal Protection team carried it for her?

notanotheroneagain · 03/09/2022 10:21

This is Mariah's tweet.

Mariah singing 🎵why you so obsessed with me🎵. Says 'like why do you care" in the podcast.

Thx @skullbabe and @LateSummerLobelia 😊

Is she that intelligent?

Not emotionally but I would say that yes, she’s intelligent if her level of education is anything to go by.

She has a bachelor's degree from Northwestern university - not a very selective school. So her level of education does not seem that impressive.

You only need to listen to her speak to see inside her chaotic head. She bandies about the buzzwords - empowerment this, duality that - but cannot express a clear idea. Someone described it as "serving up a word salad".

notanotheroneagain · 03/09/2022 10:05

No. That’s not what he said. And even the influencer you mentioned knew that v

LateSummerLobelia · 03/09/2022 10:33

her head might well be chaotic but she is smart enough to self promote to the extreme and she has managed to fool alot of people for alot of the time.

Let's be honest, she was a second rate actress until she married H and if it were not for that she would not be getting netflix deals; Oprah interviews and Mariah Carey on her podcast.

I do think it is starting to unravel though.

I think that to have a degree is quite something and shows a certain level of intelligence so I won’t change my mind on think she is intelligent. Just not emotionally so.

Part of the challenge as I see it for H&M is that their previous worlds (hollywood/acting and royal family) were in different and contrasting ways very contrived and worked by everyone knowing the rules of the game.

For Royal life the contrivance relates to knowing who to walk behind, what to defer to staff, not having to do the admin of life, not needing to immerse yourself in masses of work around getting something going - partly because the system was so old. Some of this contrivance is superficially helpful (who wants to do the admin of life) but its limiting. A royal can glide in (in the right processional order) like the proverbial above the water swan, whilst unseen people in shades of grey suits are kicking like crazy. Sometimes the contrivance knocks you - for example (if we're to believe) KM lost a housekeeper because the housekeeper couldn't do their job because KM wanted to get in amongst the admin of kitchen life. Sometimes the contrivance is tone deaf (see mostly PA intent on sticking to his (self identified) place in processional order.

For acting/hollywood, the contrivance is about creating the best opportunities for yourself through maximising your image and capitalising on connections. Faux-romances are set up to maximise young actors appeal to audiences. Acquaintances can be super charged to be friends when needed. Everyone knows its fake but the rules of the game mean everyone plays along.

Although both contrived worlds, as separate bubbles they can (just about) work but bringing them together illustrates the contrivance in different ways.

Adding to that, they are now finding themselves in a different space - philanthropic activism, a desire to be global agents of change which will have its own set of rules/contrivances But I'm not sure they have fully grasped what rules mediate this space. There isn't a historic infrastructure, they have to build the foundations and that takes time and effort (a challenge if you come from a bubble where others routinely do the life admin). There are different routes to creating opportunity and maximising connections - (a challenge if you've previously had to self propel your own image and opportunities) Are their advisors - like SS confident about the rules of this new space - if not then there may be more 'clashes' as the three overlapping spaces they occupy brush up against each other.

shockthemonkey · 03/09/2022 10:44

OK I take some of that back about Northwestern - not at the dizzy heights of the big names, but number 32 in QS. So respectable. Seems to require in the high 1400s, typically, at SAT.

TrashyPanda · 03/09/2022 10:45

MM has her degree and, like most students, I’m sure she worked hard to get that degree. i don’t think it’s fair to imply her degree I s somehow “lesser” than any other BA.

agree that academic intelligence doesn’t equal emotional intelligence/empathy.

she does have a tendency to burble on in “word soup”. But then not everyone is succinct.

I suspect you don’t realise that your manner is off putting and more than likely a big part in why people will ignore your link.

It’s said more flies are caught with cider than vinegar and I think you could learn from this because currently if I was interested in the Republican movement I’d want a better advert for it than you.

Thanks @Novella4 . I will be listening.

What's off putting are the royalists twisting themselves to demonise one woman and personal attacks on anyone who can see H&M's point of view.

skullbabe · 03/09/2022 11:08

@Serenster
”It was when they told the press in the UK firstly that Archie’s birth would be entirely private, then backtracked and said they’d announce when she was in labour, then played a “gotcha” on the press by getting their press office to announce that she was in labour after Archie was born, then dropping the news on their instagram account that I finally twigged that, actually, they were just in this for themselves. (And this was before we found out that all of this was because they had negotiated an exclusive deal with Gayle King and a US network over his birth…). Once I realised that I was having to come up with multiple rationalisations of why this behaviour was actually fine because….I couldn’t do it anymore.”

It’s not hard to see that they wanted the birth to be private. I remember chuckling at the gotcha moment because I felt that they managed to get it 🤣. I notice that you attribute the whole thing to Meghan and not Harry - even though you say they, it’s clear you feel that Meghan was the primary driver for the whole sequence of events. I think it was Harry who did this for his wife because I remember how happy he was at the announcement.

As for Gayle King - a statement released by Buckingham Palace at the time “The Duchess has not had any involvement in the CBS special, nor has she requested or given permissions to friends to participate." The special was “Meghan and Harry plus one” - and if you watched it, it was like one of those Channel 5 sit down documentaries in which they gather people with even a passing acquaintance to talk about them.

I mean there was no deal…..
