Harry and Meghan 'are invited to appear on Buckingham Palace balcony at Queen's Platinum Jubilee'

No source cited, so could just be made up news.

How do you all feel about this? Is it another refusing-to-fly-the-flag-at-half-mast-for-Diana misreading of the public mood? Does anybody actually care? And, if not, what does that signify?

The Earthshot Award show that screened exactly when first announced at 6pm on a Sunday on BBC 1 as a lead in to Strictly, the BBC’s highest rating entertainment show? That backwater? Grin

I think they’d be better off not coming for the official jubilee as they are now private citizens and the focus is on TQ and her long service but if they want to celebrate with her privately and she’s game then go ahead.

TQ may want to read Harry’s new book before committing though 😉

I see Netflix are in financial trouble, and their animation department has been cut, I wonder if this will impact on Pearl ? and any other Sussex / Netflix collaboration. These documentaries are cheap to make but they can also have a limited audience unless you can find a way to inject some tawdry drama (like the Kardasians do)

Pearl has been cancelled. Just read it in the DM.

Thank goodness for that if the bench is anything to go by.

No, the Awards show in the prime slot was the end of the series.

They had a series of documentaries leading up to the awards, one for each of the prize categories, which screened in the lead up to the awards. The first one kicked off in a prime time Sunday evening slot, then the next were all after the 10 o’clock news over the next weeks. I understood that scheduling was always the plan (they doubtless thought they’d get more online viewings) but am happy to be corrected if you have a source for it being rescheduled.

Chilledchablis1 · 02/05/2022 10:11

I am just wondering how the Sussex camp will spin Pearl being cancelled .

Ohnonevermind · 02/05/2022 10:43

Netflix will be taking a long hard look at all their production deals. Animation was just the low hanging fruit.

Netflix either have to find a way to reverse customer subscriber decline or cut costs or preferably both.

Netflix will have to restrict password sharing (like Disney) but would also need to have content to sign users back up, and honestly I don’t feel that Sussex content is the type to do it as users have requested more long term series.

When I read Netflix had paid them £100m I thought for what exactly. Two folk with very little experience of producing programmes. How many subscribers will it take to cover that alone. Wouldn't surprise me if Netflix goes bust.

StartupRepair · 02/05/2022 11:24

There is no evidence that either of them has the creative or production skills necessary to make compelling content. Their style seems to be earnest self promotion which will not make for scintillating viewing.

I'm sure they "took it in stride" 😳

AnastasiaRomanov · 02/05/2022 11:37

I see that the employees in the company for which Harry is ‘Chief impact officer’ are very unhappy about his role and pay .

Mrsjayy · 02/05/2022 11:46

Over 100 million 😳 that's ridiculous nothing is worth that !

Surely, surely , surely it can’t be 100 million?!!

smilesy · 02/05/2022 13:41

It was reportedly $100m, but that has obviously never been confirmed. Netflix’ problems are partly caused by the fact that while it was making big money, it also flung money around like the proverbial. From The Decider

thereisonlyoneofme · 02/05/2022 14:30

There is only so long H & M can play the victim, they have nothing else much to offer

AnastasiaRomanov · 02/05/2022 14:42

Especially since the RF are wise to them now . They know every conversation will be sold
and made into a big drama for attention. Once the Jubilee is over Harry’s presence at family events will not be an issue until the Queen dies.

DFOD · 02/05/2022 15:09

Think that Netflix shot themselves in the foot with this deal as I am sure there could have been be a much bigger and broader audience opportunity for an objective 360 degree investigative journalist type documentary on them and the RF more broadly which they can’t do now with appropriate balance if they have H&M on the books. I wonder if we are coming to the end of puff celebrity culture with so much saturation and over exposure via SM - or if the opposite is true and the public are insatiable and the RF need to just keep churning out content like the Kardashians to maintain interest?

Really?
You know what the Queen and Harry talked about when they met recently? I don't.
You know what they talked about at PPhillip's funeral?
I don't.
You know what they talk about on the phone/facetime with any of them?
I don't.
You know what Eugenie, her husband and H&M talked about when they stayed with them in the US?
I don't.

You are just making it up that 'every conversation will be sold'.

People who are anti pro Harry and Meghan often seem to make things up on social media. It is tiresome and a bit boring.
I mean these are strangers. Why make up things to support your negative positive view of strangers you will probably never meet?

Sure, we can't know that about every conversation. However, everything we do know about Harry's most recent meeting with the Queen has come from the interview he himself chose to give about it to an American TV network. And in that he chose to claim that she speaks to him about certain things and no one else 🙄and that he thinks she is bored of birthdays! So the recent evidence suggests he is currently perfectly willing to trade on his relationship with the queen, and compromise her privacy, for his own interests. The signs aren't good.

The latest Private Eye, btw, says that communication between the Queen, Charles and the Sussexes has been virtually zero for a while. I am far more convinced of the credibility of their inside info than of PR stories about Zoom calls.

He was being interviewed about Invictus for 13 minutes and answered a couple of questions about her. What's he supposed to do when asked? I don't call that 'trading on the Queen' even if you do. It's never going to be that he's not asked about the Queen when he's just seen her. Are you suggesting that he was paid money for that interview? Because that's what was claimed and I responded to.

Soffit · 02/05/2022 16:19

The other problem is that H & M embellish their accounts of what went on without the other side backing up what they say (Oprah interview). Harry could say whatever he likes but it may well be a fabrication or exaggeration. After a lifetime of vigilance and measured responses, HMQ is unlikely to say anything careless.

At this point, Netflix are piling on the pressure and he is desperate to give them something, anything. The Royal family do not want to get into a petty back-and-forth game with H&M so his white lies are likely to remain publicly unchallenged.
