No source cited, so could just be made up news.

How do you all feel about this? Is it another refusing-to-fly-the-flag-at-half-mast-for-Diana misreading of the public mood? Does anybody actually care? And, if not, what does that signify?

How do you know all this Soffit?
You know he is being pressured by Netflix? No
You know he is desperate?
No
You don't actually know any of this. You are just guessing and probably hoping.

He was being interviewed about Invictus for 13 minutes and answered a couple of questions about her. What's he supposed to do when asked? I don't call that 'trading on the Queen' even if you do. It's never going to be that he's not asked about the Queen when he's just seen her. Are you suggesting that he was paid money for that interview? Because that's what was claimed and I responded to.

Er, something like 'It was lovely to see her. It was a private family meeting so I won't say more than that'. That would show the respect for other people's privacy and autonomy that he values so highly for himself.

13 minutes? I haven't counted while watching but it seemed like a decent chunk of that time was about himself and or the Queen, not Invictus.

I will happily agree to disagree with you. Selling in the media and celebrity world isn't always for money. It's about using something you have that's considered an asset, that you can trade for positive coverage or other advantages. He traded on his story of meeting the Queen in that interview, even if not for actual cash on the barrelhead.

AnastasiaRomanov · 02/05/2022 17:04

I read somewhere that Charles had made it a condition of meeting Harry that there would be nothing said to the media afterwards . If true, what do we draw from that?

Roussette · 02/05/2022 17:04

I'll happily disagree with you too! I've seen the interview and the journo talking about it afterwards. There was a veteran alongside of him in the beginning talking about Invictus with Harry.

Chilledchablis1 · 02/05/2022 17:10

I am with you @Skiptheheartsandflowers
it would have been much more diplomatic to have said that HM was very well however it was a private visit . As it was , every news outlet focussed on H’s comments about HM and Invictus was almost forgotten.
obviously none of us know who said what to whom however there are “ sources” on all sides who leak news . It was heavily hinted weeks ago that the Netflix deal was in jeopardy. True ? I have no idea however given H and M’s fondness for suing , I would have expected them to shoot down such rumours .

Selling in the media and celebrity world isn't always for money. It's about using something you have that's considered an asset, that you can trade for positive coverage or other advantages.

The royal family have been selling their cachet and have been a big part of the celebrity world since the 1960s, when Philip decided the only way for the House of Windsor to stay relevant was to play ball with the media.

Their asset is their mystique and their ancestry and the national image. This props up an anachronistic institution. The other side of the coin is their dysfunction, which is worth £££££ to the media. This is the trade off and though they may claim to hate it, it is the price of their privilege.

mathanxiety · 02/05/2022 17:12

Agree with comments wrt the wildly imaginative posts of Soffit and others.

I find it remarkable that Harry doesn't realise that this is still what he's doing. Selling the cachet from which he claims to have found freedom.

Well, he managed to completely side step a direct question about missing his Dad, Roussette, so he could have simply not answered the ones about the Queen too.

Also, we only know about the Sussexes visiting the Queen from the Sussexes themselves. It was otherwise unknown, even amongst Palace staff. And we know about Eugenie and Jack staying from the pap photos that were super conveniently shot when they were all having dinner together at the front table of a local restaurant (despite them almost never being papped locally except when they are with well-known people).

Roussette · 02/05/2022 17:35

I disagree Serenster. There's a surprise Grin If you (not 'you' but 'one') has had a falling out with a close member of the family (which could be the case) it's often much better to say nothing, nothing at all.

I don't follow lots of US press so I have no idea if they have been papped before or whether, according to you, this was 'convenient'. We don't know do we?

Serenster · 02/05/2022 17:37

I’m sure there’s plenty of things we do agree on, Roussette! [Grin]

Roussette · 02/05/2022 17:38

Serenster I don't doubt that at all Smile
We do have a sticking point on this neverending subject, but that's OK!

I don't s'pose he thinks much of you either Hmm

Roussette · 02/05/2022 18:02

I don't s'pose he thinks much of you either Hmm

Umm.. he doesn’t know anything about me! He on the other hand, has had an awful lot to say. Much if it patronising and uninformed.

Roussette · 02/05/2022 18:22

So you go around calling people 'thick'.

Horrible.

Ohnonevermind · 02/05/2022 18:58

I’m still a little underwhelmed about the Sussex brand. They currently don’t have the wealth to run a gates type foundation, and they currently seem to be operating a scattergun approach with limited success as they can’t make large investments when needed or attract other peoples money to make the required large investments.

Their statements demanding vaccines be provided to everyone while noble ignored the far more expensive and probably impossible logistical challenge of getting vaccine into peoples arms. This lead me correctly or incorrectly to believe it was about publicity for their brand rather than genuinely solving the problem. The far right in the US have been disparaging of ‘experts’ but people taking about issues on the other side of the political divide where they don’t have expertise is equally annoying.

Their brand is a little lost amongst heavyweights like the gates foundation and the Obama foundation They would like to be at this top table. Sushine Sachs is a crisis focussed agency, perhaps they would be better suited to a new agency with a more positive focus

LondonWolf · 02/05/2022 19:12

Every time I read something new about them I can't help but think that they would have done marvellously well if they just hadn't done the whinge fest Oprah interview. Move to the US, keep quiet for a bit, gradually emerge doing good works and put out discreet publicity of meetings with high profile types. Their mistake was accepting help from Oprah et al, who then wanted her side of the bargain filled. They irritate the life out of me but I find them a bit sad too. So much potential there with the right advice and now they're just figures of fun.

Ohnonevermind · 02/05/2022 19:23

Isn’t it the Met Ball tonight, are they going ?

TheSnowyOwl · 02/05/2022 20:41

Viviennemary · 02/05/2022 11:14

When I read Netflix had paid them £100m I thought for what exactly. Two folk with very little experience of producing programmes. How many subscribers will it take to cover that alone. Wouldn't surprise me if Netflix goes bust.

I would be very surprised if they were really paid much. The likelihood is that they would have made the significant money if they produced something worthwhile and a huge amount of their budget would also be towards costs (to be) incurred. It’s not £100 mil to effectively have as a salary and then all the extras on top. It would be unusual if this wasn’t the case.

If so, it means any part of their deal being shelved could be quite a dent in the money they anticipated making and also the exposure they hoped to gain in order to make more money in the future. Netflix comes across as struggling at the moment and it could be they are looking at changing direction slightly with what they show to appeal to other viewers in the hope to gain view and regain those who left. Time will tell.

AnastasiaRomanov · 02/05/2022 20:44

I imagine for many people a Netflix subscription might be a cutback made in the face of huge rises in utilities , fuel etc.
