First visit of royal tour cancelled because of local protest

Viviennemary · 19/03/2022 13:41

Just seen on sky news William and Kates visit to a farm in the Caribbean was cancelled becsuse of a local protest. I am with these locals. From their point of view why should those two very entitled unelected multi millionaires who have virtually nothing to do with their country be visiting and expecting to be honoured and bowed and scraped to. They are no better or important than anybody else.

@Puzzledandpissedoff

it makes more sense (to have) full capacity for the bigger planes, which W&K were not

That makes perfect sense; however my own objection wasn't around whether it was a large or small government-owned aircraft, but why they were using it at all instead of the perfectly good commercial services between the islands

I suppose it would make a difference if it was genuinely in the area at the time, rather than some excuse being used to fly it over for them, but I rather doubt that would be the case (though am happy to be corrected)

The objection around H&M was that they used a private jet which is bad for the environment. No one cared that Harry said, it was just after the threats on their child, they did carbon offset etc.

W&K are the ones who had an empty flight fly to them, to show that they can take a 'commercial' flight - all of which backfired.

So really, I expected your objection to be about flying a big gas guzzler that is not to full capacity all over the place, rather than saying 'oh, it's ok if it belongs to the government' because ultimately, it puts out more damage to the environment.

@Puzzledandpissedoff

If anything that seems even worse, smilesy - again, what's wrong with BA's first class service to Barbados?
Sorry, x post @Puzzledandpissedoff
notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 14:48

@Puzzledandpissedoff clearly meant Bahamas.

Have you been following the thread ?

notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 14:52

@Serenster not sure why you are showing me a black man in front of a black regime. That is how it's supposed to be.

The Jamaican gov. will have black people on there with nothing to project or image to worry about. Most likely they never thought about how these pictures look. It is the duty of the RF to avoid these minefields. They could have advised, that we would not be taking certain pics, as they project a certain way, and I'm sure the gov organisers would understand - I highly doubt they were forced.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/03/2022 15:06

Apologies all - yes of course I meant the Bahamas (what a stupid thing to do Blush)

Roussette · 25/03/2022 15:12

Correct me if I'm wrong, but how do we know the Jamaican Government arranged all of this, as opposed to the RF requesting this... i.e. inspecting guards and the land rover.

Just curious because I read somewhere that they requested the visit as opposed to being invited over. I thought it was a RF idea for Queen's platinum and to shore up CW support. So the Palace could've set the sort of itinerary they wanted maybe?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/03/2022 15:14

Yes and that's exactly the same objection I have over W&K (and any of the others) flying non-commercial, though less because of the environment and more because it looks too much like trough-guzzling insensitivity

You're quite right that W&K's Easyjet stunt didn't end well, but I suspect a lot of that was because it was seen as just that - a stunt
If they used commercial wherever possible (obviously sometimes it genuinely isn't) then there'd have been nothing to report about

smilesy · 25/03/2022 15:25

The only thing is they started their tour in Belize, and there are no direct flights there 🤣🤣. The reason that they did not travel on a commercial airline in this instance would seem to be because they are officially representing the Country. Like the President of the US on Airforce 1.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/03/2022 15:51

But isn't the Bahamas where they're off to next, smilesy? (you're right though that I'm getting in a complete mess with the countries-beginning-with- B!!)

Roussette · 25/03/2022 16:14

They're off to Bermuda I thought

Bet it'll be just like this:

Right, so let’s get this straight, You are saying when the government of Jamaica (which naturally is largely made up of black Jamaicans) would have been happy with this engagement on the tour because they did not see anything in it to concern them. And contextually it is also long established diplomatic protocol when dignitaries from all nations and backgrounds are visiting. It is regarded as an honour to be invited to inspect troops. But you think the white visitors should have declined the honour because it wouldn’t play well in pictures?

So essentially, you consider they should have snubbed their hosts on the basis that they knew better than them what is appropriate, and that what was intended to show honour to them was unplalatable to Western eyes. Had they done so, that would have been suspiciously like the kind of attitudes that the 19th century colonisers you claim to be so despicable might also have exhibited.

Most flights from the UK to The Bahamas transit the US, which obviously isn't an option here. It's unlikely they'd find a direct flight to meet their exact schedule. Also, their itinerary will have been planned months in advance, involves a lot of travel and is pretty tight so any flight delays could put the whole thing out of whack. Kate flew commercial to Copenhagen for her trip there last month, and her appearances were delayed because her flight was late. It didn't really matter as it was only a brief visit in one location, but for a complex international itinerary like this, flight delays could have a major impact. Then there are the obvious security concerns.

What do you think would be better if they and their entire entourage and the press pack flew commercial?

Serenster · 25/03/2022 17:11

Here’s William inspecting the guard on arrival in both Belize and Jamaica also by the way, which passed unnoticed here (and on twitter) - but then the “Don’t they know what they look like” narrative hadn’t been established then.

notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 17:49

@Serenster that is another god awful picture you just posted.

I can't believe I have to explain this.

For a black person to be seen doing the inspection etc. is no an issue as it is not steeped in racist history. So the Jamaicans have no issue with this, no one does.

The RF on the other other hand did this in a loaded racist way, so it is not acceptable currently.

So while the Jamaicans can do it and are used to it, the former oppressors should not. If the RF advise the Jamaican government, that we respectfully ask that we skip that part as it does not fit in with today and the optics of it, I doubt the Jamaicans would force them.

There is no 'snubbing' in this, just respect that our history is shameful and we did this with bad intentions in the past, and we would offend a lot of people if we carry on like we are still in the past.

SallyLockheart · 25/03/2022 18:27

what a load of bollocks

notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 18:29

Nice insult to black people there, @SallyLockheart

Samcro · 25/03/2022 19:12

Just seen a lovely photo of them on the news, both in shorts and t shirts, looked so nice .

notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 19:24

In all this praise of KM sashaying around in pretty dresses, I still have not seen her wearing any local Caribbean dresses and 'promoting' their brand, as it were.

Chilledchablis1 · 25/03/2022 19:30

I believe that Catherine ( NB she hasn’t been KM for more than 10 years ) has worn some local jewellery .
Question - why do you dislike her so much ?

HeadNorth · 25/03/2022 19:38

Everyone is ragging on what Kate wears, but what about William’s embarrassing over the top pseudo military get up. He was in RAF for about 10 mins, how does that qualify him to dress up like a prize pillock decked out with medals and curtain swags.

SallyLockheart · 25/03/2022 19:47

not at all. read that post as you will but it was nothing to do with Jamaican people, I can assure you.
notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 19:49

I do not dislike KM, I simply treat her equally to MM. Now, you see what it sounds like when lots more people than me come on here and pile on non-stop on H&M?

On here, the Duchess of Sussex is known as Meghan Markle, even though she is not married to a Mr Markle. So I will also address the Duchess of Cambridge as Kate Middleton till the MM reference changes.

notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 19:51

@SallyLockheart I was re-iterating what people of colour have said about their criticism of the pictures, and you just came on here, and without any argument at all, called it all bullocks.

I listen and to me it all makes sense.

Maybe you can come with real views, instead of being so insulting !
