First visit of royal tour cancelled because of local protest

Just seen on sky news William and Kates visit to a farm in the Caribbean was cancelled becsuse of a local protest. I am with these locals. From their point of view why should those two very entitled unelected multi millionaires who have virtually nothing to do with their country be visiting and expecting to be honoured and bowed and scraped to. They are no better or important than anybody else.

@HeadNorth

Everyone is ragging on what Kate wears, but what about William’s embarrassing over the top pseudo military get up. He was in RAF for about 10 mins, how does that qualify him to dress up like a prize pillock decked out with medals and curtain swags.
I agree, its all very dated and odd. To be fair its the same for all the rf they all dress up like they have risen through the ranks. I feel the same way about random celebrities who get awards from universities that they haven't worked for.

I know, right?

This is not the first time they have been criticised for exactly the same thing, but they never seem to listen. That is why I wonder about this tone deaf PR, they seem used to getting their way no matter what, and are not aware how the world has moved on and will now challenge the empire's new clothes.

@notanotheroneagain

In all this praise of KM sashaying around in pretty dresses, I still have not seen her wearing any local Caribbean dresses and 'promoting' their brand, as it were.
Wouldn't she get accused of cultural appropriation?
notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 19:56

I understand where you are coming from @Samcro, but I believe most honorary degrees will depend on the contribution the person has made, rather than they have been lucky born to a certain family.

SallyLockheart · 25/03/2022 19:57

"I do not dislike KM". yeah. I can't imagine being so obsessed with bringing another person down so much, being perpetually spiteful about someone you don't know...or do you?

SallyLockheart · 25/03/2022 19:59

bullocks? I think you need to spell check!

notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 19:59

Wouldn't she get accused of cultural appropriation?

Why would she?
Did you not see the last Caribbean fashion show? The clothes don't have to be traditional native clothes. MM wore African designers on her trip, I just assumed that KM does the same, so I was quite surprised on this trip. Even first ladies do this when they visit other countries.

notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 20:03

Turns out, even my spell check does not like swearing.

I am not the one squatting on and starting KM hate threads, so don't even start with that lie !
I see what is a breathtakingly stupid tour with one thing after the other, so yes, I do post now.

IcedPurple · 25/03/2022 21:06

Did you not see the last Caribbean fashion show?

Can't say I did, no.

The Caribbean consists of very many different countries, with different languages, cultures and traditions. What exactly is a "Caribbean fashion show?"

notanotheroneagain · 25/03/2022 21:09

Caribbean fashion week puts together a show of several countries in the Caribbean.

Mumsnut · 26/03/2022 13:50

Per the telegraph, she wore accessories from Maya, a Belize label, and Lashawndla Bailey-Miller, of Jamaica. No clothing though.

Papayamya · 26/03/2022 14:00

She would be criticised either way regarding what she wore, some people seem intent to nit pick as they evidently dislike her.

notanotheroneagain · 26/03/2022 14:15

A less than 50 quid bracelet from Jamaica and a Mayan bag. Don't know anything else.

Even when they said she has £350 anklet, I thought it was Caribbean, but that turned out to be Stella McCartney. All the accessories were Anya Hindmarch or other English, American or French brands.

Roussette · 26/03/2022 14:37

I don't dislike her. I don't know her.

However, we can comment can't we? I thought the silver dress she wore was absolutely stunning. BUT the mother of pearl jewellery alone from Van Cleef & Arpels was £13,000. I do find that quite obscene to be honest. As if there wouldn't be jewellery in her collection that would be adequate.

SoyMarina · 26/03/2022 14:58

I bet Meghan Harry are enjoying Kate and William being criticised during this trip.

MummyJ12 · 26/03/2022 15:01

The Van Cleef jewellery is part of her collection. She has worn both the necklace and earrings on numerous occasions.

smilesy · 26/03/2022 15:04

As if there wouldn't be jewellery in her collection that would be adequate.

But she has worn the jewellery before. So it is from her collection 🤷‍♀️

Yes, notanotheroneagain, I get the impression from your posts that your interest in the royals is relatively recent. Anyway, your assumption is wrong - Kate’s past tours have shown us that she seldom wears clothes by local designers. Perhaps because she aims to acquire pieces that she’ll be able to work into her wardrobe long term? She generally defaults to the same designers and brands, as she has done here.

The exceptions are where there’s a link to a designer she already wears - Erdem in Canada, Emilia Wickstead in New Zealand etc. she did once wear a gorgeous Zimmerman dress in Australia, but that has been worn again in the UK. Otherwise, she really only buys pieces from local designers when she’s going to be wearing culturally appropriate clothing - the tours to India and Pakistan are good examples of this. Otherwise, she’ll often wear jewellery or accessories by local designers.

There’s certainly no blanket rule that any representative, royal or otherwise, wears local designers when travelling. Quite the opposite - often they like to show off their own fashion industry on the world stage.

Dysco · 26/03/2022 15:58

These threads are always disappointing. She always wears clothing and jewellery multiple times, and she would have been criticised had she opted for traditional dress. Perhaps time for some posters to get a life, eh.

Roussette · 26/03/2022 16:17

I had no idea it was in her collection but I don't normally observe what she wears all the time so I wouldn't know that. It was quoted like it was new

queenofarles · 26/03/2022 16:46

Isn’t it Camilla’s ? She has several Pieces by van cleef and Arples.

smilesy · 26/03/2022 17:03

Isn’t it Camilla’s

I Don’t think so. Van Cleef et Arpels probably feature in all the Royal women’a collections I would imagine 🤷‍♀️

It shows the lack of moving on with the times of W&K. In the older days, there was a distinct lack of native designers, therefore HMQ or Diana would have to wear UK brands etc. But there is a big boom in the last few decades from other countries, especially CW in the fashion industry.

Currently, nothing screams self serving and tone deaf than sashaying about in expensive frocks and not one from the local designers, promoting your own instead of native designers.

Flaunting your wealth with exorbitantly priced little jewellery worth an amount that could feed a small village or build something needed is particularly vulgar.
