could not believe it when I saw the advert for it last night. so PW is presenting this thing. the same Prince who flies all over the world.
obviously won't be watching as him and DA lecturing people about climate change is so hypocritical.

@Samcro

I find it interesting how much support PW is getting for this. out of interest would you feel the same if it was PC?
I don't think it would matter if it was PC because it's not about PW or Attenborough, it's about the finalists and their projects imo. Have you watched the videos about the finalists ?
smilesy · 01/10/2021 11:51

Samcro I agree with pp who say that regardless of who set up the initiative, it is a good idea. I don’t think it’s lots of support for PW necessarily, it’s more that people are pointing out the inaccuracies in some posts which say that he was nothing to do with it 🤷‍♀️

I would, because what's really important in all this, are the solutions that are being found and funded. That wouldn't happen without the PR that your highest profiled royalty bring.

They are at least off-setting and I love that Prince Charles runs his Aston Martin on fuel made from wine wastage and a cheese by-product.

his Aston Martin runs on fuel made from wine wastage and a cheese by-product.

Bet that smells, erm, interesting 😂

waltzingparrot · 01/10/2021 12:18

Blush *Sorry, bad editing.

rubicscubicle · 01/10/2021 12:44

@samcro raises a valid question, because so many times we have heard from most of the people who are supporting him, they are the first when H&M do something good to harp on about, they are not scientists, what do they know about it, they are hypocrites who private jet and have SUVs and helicopters, living in large houses etc.

smilesy · 01/10/2021 13:23

rubiscubicle. I would be in favour of this initiative if H&M had come up with it. But as it was William then credit has to be given where it is due. There are many other things to criticise the RF for, but I don’t think this is one of them.

Serenster · 01/10/2021 13:53

I suppose the equivalent large-scale project for Harry would be Invictus? I don’t think anyone harps on about that, as you suggest. His involvement and commitment to it is well-regarded, so far as I can see.

rubicscubicle · 01/10/2021 14:05

It is not Invictus, because Harry is a vet himself, so directly affected by the matter at hand, so not comparable at all.
Even on that I have heard some criticism.

But on this, more like the environmental issues that Harry champions, as well as currently, Vax Live. He is not been involved at a very personal level. But is being torn apart as we speak, and you being one of those critics.

julieca · 01/10/2021 14:30

I have seen plenty of snippy comments on here about Harry and Invictus.

Roussette · 01/10/2021 15:28

So have I...many a time. It's ironic isn't it...

Service men and women really rate Invictus, and is so highly thought of by .just about everyone out there
But not on MN. Hmm
And as rubics says he is being totally denigrated as I type about daring to speak about vaccines

Talk about one rule for one, and another rule for W

julieca · 01/10/2021 16:06

Invictus makes sense for Harry because he has served.
These things work best when the cause has integrity with the stated personal interests of the celebrity or RF member.
So a better fit for William would be championing air ambulances for example.
But they keep trying to compete with Harry and Meghan and that will always take them down blind alleys.

SallyLockheart · 01/10/2021 16:18

so what concrete things have Harry and Meghan actually done to contribute to the environment/climate change issue?

As opposed to talk about action needing to be done to tackle it?

I also talk about everyone doing their bit to help climate change and want our government and COP26 and particularly China to stop investing in coal mining.

smilesy · 01/10/2021 16:23

Oh for goodness sake, it has just been noted that in this case, William has had a good idea and has followed up on it. Stop whinging about how people don’t appreciate Harry or that some have been snippy about Invictus. I think Invictus is excellent and I’m sure most other people do to. There will always be those who denigrate what he does even when it’s a good thing. I personally don’t think what Harry has said recently about vaccines is helpful, but I do think the Earthshot prize seems good, and I have said I would feel the same if it were Harry 🤷‍♀️ As for William competing with Harry and Meghan, he has been working on this since 2018.

Samcro · 01/10/2021 16:25

that long?
I am surprised.

agreed.

this is from Wikipedia. I know, not 100% reliable but nevertheless

On 31 December 2019, the Duke of Cambridge announced the Earthshot Prize, created after two years of research, to be given to five individuals or organisations who come up with impactful and sustainable solutions for earth's environmental problems between 2021 and 2030.[2] The Duke stated that he felt responsibility to establish the prize as the earth was at a "tipping point" and cited the work of the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and Prize judge David Attenborough as inspiring influences.[1][3] The prize's name is inspired by former US President John F Kennedy's "Moonshot"[4] - when he set a goal in 1961 to land American astronauts on the Moon before the end of the decade.

smilesy · 01/10/2021 16:56

He was first inspired in 2018. It was in the article on sky that I linked to yesterday here it is again

amusedtodeath1 · 01/10/2021 17:26

So because people doubt Harry's motivation for his recent "charitable" endeavours we should all doubt William's too? William has never shown any signs of self-promotion, or cashing in on good causes. He clearly doesn't love publicity either. That's why I give him the benefit of the doubt.

One brother is here in the UK, trying to help in some small way to make a difference, the other is in the USA trying to help himself.

Thats a big difference.

julieca · 01/10/2021 17:40

So either wikipedia is wrong and it only took a year to develop. Or it wasn't William's idea and he came on board a year after development.

smilesy · 01/10/2021 17:52

@julieca. I would suggest that Wikipedia is wrong, and why do you keep insisting that it cannot have been his idea?

smilesy · 01/10/2021 18:00

Here is the Earthshot website. It lists 31 December 2019 as the launch date ( so almost 2020). William says he was inspired in 2018 in the Sky piece. Okay so it may not be quite 24 months, I don’t know. I really don’t think this is evidence he was not involved in its creation though. Why would all these different sources lie? I’m not posting this because I am a huge fan of William btw. I just find it bizarre that you want to deny all evidence. Get over it.

julieca · 01/10/2021 18:06

He says he had the idea in September 2018, so 15 months later launched it.

smilesy · 01/10/2021 18:08

Like I said, not really evidence that he didn’t think of it. Straw clutching. And what for?

maddy68 · 01/10/2021 18:14

That's ridiculous. Everyone flys. Doesn't mean you can't campaign for more environmentally friendly methods
