could not believe it when I saw the advert for it last night. so PW is presenting this thing. the same Prince who flies all over the world.
obviously won't be watching as him and DA lecturing people about climate change is so hypocritical.

"Prince Charles recently faced criticism for flying 16,000 miles in private jets and helicopters in the days leading up to this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland"

Hedgehogface · 28/09/2021 15:20

We really aren't going to get anywhere with the issue of addressing climate change if so many people just focus on climate-shaming anyone who tries to raise the issue.

Try to rise above the level of the Daily Mail, and focus on the issue - which is that radical change is needed if we are going to slow down climate change and have a future.

Serenster · 28/09/2021 15:25

“They’re all doing it, Ref!” Grin

Why single Prince Charles out here, @Roussette? Most people who attended Davos used private jets to get there. Few of them will have demonstrated anything like the interest and commitment to environmental issues that Prince Charles has over the years.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 28/09/2021 15:26

What an absolute joke. Are they that tone deaf?! Hmm

rubicscubicle · 28/09/2021 15:40

@Roussette

Or when PC took a helicopter flight to give a talk on climate change a few months ago? It was criticised

You can quote commercial flights all you like but let's not pretend it's the norm.

A helicopter regularly lands in the grounds of KP to take K,W and kids to Amer Hall

I believe this was just last week.

How understanding people are when certain royals do these things, and the vitriol others get.

Serenster · 28/09/2021 15:42

Honestly, I suspect they are much the same as all the “little people” in the UK right now feeling various degrees of frustration, concern and outright anger because the convenient and swift form of transport they have come to rely upon, and view as a necessity, is threatened right now due to fuel supply chain issues. I’m fairly sure there are plenty of people in other countries who look on agog at our casual reliance on fossil-fuelled cars, and demand for mass air travel.

As Hedgehogface said, shaming people for this is really not productive.

Roussette · 28/09/2021 15:47

I singled PC out like posters single H&M out and 16,000 miles in private jets seems a tad excessive Hmm
Did all the Davos attendees have that sort of record?

Roussette · 28/09/2021 15:50

Do you honestly believe the RFs travel will be affected by fuel shortages 😮😂

They've probably get their own petrol pump lol

Serenster · 28/09/2021 15:52

Honestly, I imagine they will have racked up way, way more. Most of Prince Charles’ trips will be within one small country, he’s not regularly flying transatlantic or across the US.

SickAndTiredAgain · 28/09/2021 16:05

surely it would have been better for someone who doesn't travel so much to do it.

I get what you mean, but didn’t he set this up? As opposed to having been picked as just someone to hand out the prize?
So to say, wouldn’t it be better for someone else to do it, it probably would, but they didn’t.

Serenster · 28/09/2021 16:09

No, I don’t - I didn’t say that, though?

Hahaha, would love to see K&W queue to put gas in their private helicopter (were they not given a £8M helicopter back in 2014). But I doubt we would see them, surprised those plebs saw them get in and out of their helicopter last week, considering they put up a 20K hedge for privacy.
Aspiringmatriarch · 28/09/2021 16:28

I think the prize is a really good idea, and who knows what may come from it? I have to admit I've not been impressed by William's projects up to now but I'm hopeful for this one. Make this a success, Will - your family is in dire need of some positive press!

Serenster · 28/09/2021 16:45

Sorry @Roussette, I have managed to make a mess of my quoting and posting due to being on my phone. Grin

To clarify - when I said “Honestly, I suspect they are much the same as all the “little people” in the UK right now feeling various degrees of frustration, concern and outright anger because the convenient and swift form of transport they have come to rely upon, and view as a necessity, is threatened right now due to fuel supply chain issues”

I was responding to HeyBoyHeyGirl who had said “What an absolute joke. Are they that tone deaf?!” about (I assume!) the 1500 private jet flights into and out of Davos.

The point I was making is that we all, whether super-rich or members of the general UK population, have come to relay upon things like cars (in our cases) or private jets (in their cases) to make our daily lives easier and more flexible. The news in the past week has demonstrated how aggrieved we feel at losing that convenience.

I don’t for a moment imagine a Davos invitee is sitting there rubbing his fingers together with glee thinking “Haha I’m screwing the planet but I’m rich and I don’t care”, any more than I imagine my neighbour down the road thinks that when she uses her car to drive herself to her shift at the hospital. At some stage however we are all going to have to give up the conveniences we have become accustomed to for the sake of the environment, and no-one wants to do that.

Roussette · 28/09/2021 16:48

Yes, agree much harder on a mobile, I invent words that don't exist!
I agree with your post.

Samcro · 28/09/2021 16:56

To be fair i would have moaned about any member of the RF doing it.
The idea that some one who lives a luxurious lifestyle like them can lecture people like me, makes my blood boil.
Imagine the energy needed just to heat one of their massive houses, cars and so on.
They don't lead by example.

No I didn't specifically mean the Davos conference, I meant William and the Royals in general talking about the climate while living as they do, as mentioned above, is a joke.

Aha - sorry, then!
HotChoc10 · 28/09/2021 22:10

Who has declared the prize 'the most prestigious'? The press release?

Serenster · 28/09/2021 22:55

Yes, totally, given it’s only just been launched. Bigging things up is PR’s job, after all.

I do like the idea that anyone would launch a new project and come out saying “we’re aiming to be in the 5 of environmental prizes! Well, fingers crossed…” Grin

crumpet · 28/09/2021 23:03

I think it’s a great idea - it will be interesting to see how it pans out and whether the winners/ their projects come to anything. Having someone as high profile as PW and David Attenborough involved is a good thing, is it not, to generate publicity and awareness. Think the criticism on this thread is a bit snippy.

julieca · 28/09/2021 23:28

I wish rich people who talked about climate change actually tried to do things in their own lives to reduce their impact on the climate. At least Great Thurnberg tries to do this. I see zero evidence of William and Kate doing this.
I do hope the earth prize helps to make a difference. But I am sick of being told by rich people who regularly fly all over the world and have multiple houses, that people like me need to reduce our climate impact. I fly for a one week holiday every year to Europe and have one house my family live in. Our climate impact is minuscule compared to William's.
And I know Prince Charles has always been interested in the environment, but if it is bad for the environment but he personally wants to do it, he does. For example, he lobbied for changes to climate change policy without disclosing that he would personally benefit from those changes through shares he held.
So I don't have any faith in either of them really care about the environment beyond platitudes. It reminds me of when Prince Philip was the patron for the world wildlife fund but went out on safari and shot a tiger. Its all about telling us what we should do, while they carry on doing exactly what they want.

Samcro · 29/09/2021 11:10

Think the criticism on this thread is a bit snippy.
really, no one should question why someone who has no "green credentials" is doing it?
please tell me what PW does.

I have read s lot about this project and read all about this year's finalists.

It's a very impressive project.

Imagine if the five winners from this year can replicate their projects in other parts of the world and five new winning projects each year for ten years. All solutions to the world's environmental problems. It is very much a force for good, this project, that Prince William has helped bring into being.

rubicscubicle · 30/09/2021 09:34

They have no green credentials. I wonder what commercial flight they took to the Middleton wedding recently.
