prince William - earthshot prize

could not believe it when I saw the advert for it last night. so PW is presenting this thing. the same Prince who flies all over the world.
obviously won't be watching as him and DA lecturing people about climate change is so hypocritical.
(rant over)

Nobody suggested he has green credentials. Celebrities fundraise for charity all of the time and are used for PR/Media purposes and not because they have credentials. PW has the ability to convince corporate sponsors to donate

@BananaPB when charities and causes choose patrons or ambassadors they normally look at it how closely the individual's behaviour and values fit their cause. So nobody sensible would get Frankie Boyle to be a patron of a learning disability charity. But when it is RF members, for some all sense goes out the window. PW should not be preaching on climate change.

And I agree the only reason William joined the Earthshot is that it was not as well known so he could put his name to it.
But no unlike some claimed, he did not help in any way to set it up. He is a patron. Someone to wheel out who is famous and get a bit of publicity.
I know how these things work and I can see why William wanted to do this as he is trying to attach his name to something meaningful and serious. But I think those behind the Earthshot were wrong to choose William. He has no integrity with the brand. Totally wrong choice.

That's interesting julieca, I thought he had set it up. Obviously not on his own - but I was under the impression he was more than just a patron. He does need a really substantial project IMO - something like D of E or the Prince's Trust. I don't know if he's the right person to be attached to an environmental prize but I hope it boosts the publicity in the way they want it to.

julieca. can you inform us as to who created the Earthshot competition. It appears as though it was created with the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Do you know any different?

@julieca along with the others on the thread I'm wondering where you got the idea that it wasn't anything to do with William, do you have any links?

Perhaps have a look at this link and listen to Attenbough asking William about the story of how it evolved. William's answer is interesting story, won't ruin it for you as you can listen along with some other interesting and positive people in the video.

I must admit the whole looking for solutions and positive thinking appeals to me - Bill Gates has some positive stories too on human ingenuity and future developments we can't yet imagine.

I prefer that to the (mention no names) not so bright types of the world - they're the modern day "end of the world" sandwich board twerps we used to have in Oxford Street Grin. Also a bit like the snakeoil salemsan rolling into town to see who they can scare and then offer the solution by parting with some hard earned cash....opens coat and says "I have a Foundation for you, donate here .... "

Oh that inside knowledge of yours again.... well I’d be careful it would be rather indiscreet of you, IF it were true wouldn’t it..... that company being approached for Earthshot and also able to solve world covid vaccine distribution. It’s a lot of coincidences ... must be very easily identifiable.... Harry probably be keen to have a word with you. ‘Just needs money’ is also a motto I’ve heard Harry say that too. Simple.

It really isn't identifiable. Loads of companies do cold chain storage, it is not specialist. And I suspect lots of companies were approached and asked to get involved in earthshot as donors. I cant imagine we were the only ones approached who said we weren't interested in donating large sums.

The earthshot prize is funded by the royal foundation which by the looks of it is money from prince william’s foundation. royalfoundation.com/programme/the-earthshot-prize/

I think it’s a great thing they are using their profile to promote this and doing this sort of initiative. It’s up to individuals whether they want to do their bit and how each person wants to contribute. What they are doing here is better than nothing. Every contribution to the environment however big or small is great.

Your later response just lists who support earth shot as donors. There’s a long list of donors and supporters on the Royal Foundation website. Perhaps have a look at that first.

For someone seemingly high up in whatever organisation, we hear a lot of gossip, speculation and now downright fabrications. And you are part of the decision making not to donate to the earth shot scheme?

@julieca. Cold chain is not difficult in principle, but how would you suggest this would be set up in countries with wars raging, or with limited access to electricity. Even in this country, the mRNA vaccines are often not available in doctors surgeries because the specific cold stores required are not available. It takes time and, as you say, money to set these things up. Also, Harry did not ask for this to be done, he asked for IP,s to be waived. If he had asked that help be given to distribute the vaccines that are already manufactured, rather than sole woolly request that nations be given the recipe to make their own, that would have been far more useful.
As for the Earthshot, of course there are others funding it as well. No one said there weren’t. Did you expect David Attenborough, who is also involved, to be funding it? You said that W didn’t set the thing up. That was incorrect and that it was people have taken issue with.

Oh hang on, julieca, so all you actually know is that at some stage the organisation you worked for was approached to see if they would be interested in being a funding partner of the Earthshot prize before its official announcement? And from this you deduce that it’s nothing to do with Prince William?

Do you not realise that in order to announce the prize, including its backers, at their big opening splash in December 2019 the team behind it will have probably spent about two years’ lead time in courting potential donors, signing them up, greeting the legalities sorted, coming up with a PR plan and the branding/marketing campaign etc etc. So your account is actually entirely consistent with that process.

What an odd question. I think it’s a really good initiative - I have read about the various nominees for the awards, and will watch the show tonight.Not because it’s Prince William, but because I think it sounds like a really good initiative. I’d have been equally motivated if it had been lead by David Attenborough too, by the way. Or Greta Thunberg…

@Serenster Prince William says publicly that the idea of the earth shot prize came to him in the Autumn of 2018. So we know when he is supposed to have had this idea.
I posted the link about donors because someone thought the Duke and Duchess Foundation was funding the earth shot prize all by themselves.

If the focus of the initiative remains on the candidates and the projects with Attenborough and William narrating the in between bits then I think it could be interesting. After the shit show of the English government giving money to their friends, good people winning money that will benefit other people sounds refreshing.

The prize could lead to more people applying next year, other sponsors appearing or the current projects being expanded to other places if they are scaleable.
