PW is part of the establishment. Why would he have to have specific green credentials to support this project? I am not a huge fan but the point doesn't hold.

Samcro · 30/09/2021 10:51

it does if he is going to lecture people.

@Coronateachingagain so Prince William can tell everyone else what to do, but add masses of carbon emissions himself just because he is a member of the Royal Family?
Most people like anyone campaigning to have integrity. PW has none.

BananaPB · 30/09/2021 10:56

He is a hypocrite talking about climate change

BUT

You should have a look at the finalists projects. They are really impressive. PW has used his clout to get corporate money to people who are making a real difference.

BananaPB · 30/09/2021 11:01

This is a video with the finalists projects.

How can we get money to people who want to come up with solutions to climate change but need the money to keep on going or expand the scale of their ideas ? We know that governments are not an efficient or fair way to do this.

BrilloPaddy · 30/09/2021 11:07

Would people rather they arrived to events on a bike Hmm

rubicscubicle · 30/09/2021 11:13

Funny how people will bend over backwards to defend William, when they shoot down others for SUVs and private jets.

Also, the pp who said it was an original idea, it's not, this is the duplicate of the Goldman Environment Prize, which William could have promoted, but I guess he wanted his own name on something.

Roussette · 30/09/2021 11:13

There's a big difference between an electric or hybrid car, and a helicopter.
Doesn't have to be walking or a bike lol

Are you living in the UK? If so you will know the system a bit, and while it looks coming from him, there will be a whole apparatus controlling things and what he can and cannot support and on what he can say and not say. Or do you really think he has 100% freedom to do and say as he pleases?

BananaPB · 30/09/2021 12:28

Yes- The environment is as close to political as the RF can get.
The Duchess of Cambridge commenting on Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa raised some people's eyebrows for being too political. Even people on here were surprised that she spoke up.

BananaPB · 30/09/2021 12:30

Rich people and companies are getting credit but I like that the winners of the money get to develop their ideas further or start new ones. I think that investment in these people and projects should be applauded

julieca · 30/09/2021 13:33

@Coronateachingagain yes I am in the UK. I know the key RF members like William are advised what they can and can't do, and that includes which charities to support. He will have had a lot of or advice about his involvement with this project. This means either that advice is not very good, or he has ignored it.
I suspect the pr has suggested this to compete with Harry and Meghan talking about climate change. They seem to be in eternal competition. You can almost predict what William and Catharome will do next, by looking at what Harry and Meghan are doing.

Serenster · 30/09/2021 13:58

Also, the pp who said it was an original idea, it's not, this is the duplicate of the Goldman Environment Prize, which William could have promoted, but I guess he wanted his own name on something

It’s not really a duplicate. The key difference with the Earthshot Prize is the idea that this is not just rewarding an idea, but funding the scaling up of the winning ideas to maximise their impact. It’s more like an environmental “The Apprentice” in that regard than just a cash prize (the cash involved is 5 times more than the Goldman prize also). A Prize Global Alliance, including global companies such as Arup, Bloomberg., Deloitte, Herbert Smith Freehills, Hitachi, Microsoft, Salesforce, Unilever, Vodacom, and Walmart, has been announced, with Michael Bloomberg, UN Environmental Head - to help the winners "scale up" their winning ideas. That kind of access will be invaluable (and previously unobtainable) to the nominees.

So it’s not just recognition, but aims to ensure implementation and development as well, which is different to other prize schemes.

Serenster · 30/09/2021 14:03

Even if it were true that “pr has suggested this to compete with Harry and Meghan talking about climate change” (which I think is so ridiculous as to be laughable Grin ) the very impressive number and calibre of global leaders, experts, corporates and investors that William has been able to pull together to fund, implement and promote this project speaks volumes about Prince William’s influence compared to his brother’s.

julieca · 30/09/2021 14:03

It is pretty much the same as the Goldman prize. I have looked at some of the finalists for the Earth prize and the scaling up is just pr, except for the finalists who are businesses. Sure investment into a business can increase their operations. But winning a prize like this would help a business attract investment anyway.
I will reserve judgement but actually, work in this field. And what is needed is proper funding and political power, not awards that companies get behind because it looks good and does not really challenge any power.

julieca · 30/09/2021 14:04

@Serenster William has not put it together, don't be naive.

Serenster · 30/09/2021 14:13
@Serenster William has not put it together, don't be naive.
It was launched by Prince William and his and Kate’s Royal Foundation in 2019 and they continue to run it until the end of this year.

Everyone who has spoken about it has acknowledged that it was Prince William’s project. I have no doubt that it will have involved a large number of experts, advisors and assistants to set it up (such is the nature of any big project like this) but it is very much Prince William’s.

julieca · 30/09/2021 14:16

Okay...
I was hearing about the Earthshot Prize before 2019. My understanding is that they were looking for someone high profile to head it up and get publicity. So put together at least in draft before William was onboard.

Samcro · 30/09/2021 14:27

I am still waiting for someone to tell me PW green credentials.

OP posts:
Serenster · 30/09/2021 14:36

Well then, if true, the people behind the pitch found a great advocate who is able to get it worldwide publicity (and, now it’s set up, it really doesn’t matter if people like Prince William or loathe him, as the prize has garnered all the publicity - PR win!).

(I don’t imagine that any of the royals come up with the original idea for all their initiatives by the way, as in my experience that’s not how things work in reality, unless you are a true entrepreneur, and none of the Royals strike me as that type! I assume they see a project they want to commit to that aligns to their own interests, and the value comes with how personally committed they are to the project).

rubicscubicle · 30/09/2021 14:41

....nvestors that William has been able to pull together to fund, implement and promote this project speaks volumes about Prince William’s influence .......

Yes they speak volumes like Trump apologies, known racist Bloomberg. What was he thinking?

So what? He is who he is and is advised to support here and there. This is one of them. I agree he is not the genesis of the idea nor he is an expert, neither of that he is expected to be. Moot point

The only reason William joined was because Earthshot was not as well established as Goldman prize. It was a chance for him to claim a project. He could have upgraded Goldman, but everyone already knows that he did not create that one.

I I think you should ask Antonio Guterrez that, rubicscubicle, given it was he who appointed Bloomberg as as The United Natiins’ Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions.
rubicscubicle · 30/09/2021 15:08

Antonio Guterrez is not the one who declared we are not a racist family.
