could not believe it when I saw the advert for it last night. so PW is presenting this thing. the same Prince who flies all over the world.
obviously won't be watching as him and DA lecturing people about climate change is so hypocritical.

In 2014 the Queen bought William and Kate their own luxury helicopter.

Lets not pretend William cares about the environment. Earthshot prize is his big project to pretend the RF is worth keeping.

smilesy · 05/10/2021 12:50

Thanks Rousette but as far as I can see those five articles are about the same helicopter trip. Not sure that proves that they do it regularly. Also, whilst googling, I found this article in the Guardian ( written by a climate scientist) about a different “William” and his helicopter rides, pointing out that berating individuals about their carbon footprint is largely pointless.

derxa · 05/10/2021 13:03

@julieca

Lets not pretend William cares about the environment. Earthshot prize is his big project to pretend the RF is worth keeping.
And what if is? The Earthshot prize has its own intrinsic value.
Gwrach · 05/10/2021 13:06

Oh come one now, Harry and William use helicopters and private jets. As do many other in their social status brackets.

I don't think Harry's carbon footprint is any less than Williams. Especially if you factor in the cross Atlantic travel. They are two of the same, not surprising really as they are siblings raised Inna similar fashion.

But my understanding is people won't accept this earth shot prize for the good it is because PW has lent his name to it.

Does it really matter?

The projects on the list are amazing, they are implementing action. They should be supported.

smilesy · 05/10/2021 13:11

@Gwrach. I agree. The projects are really worthwhile and should make a genuine difference.

Roussette · 05/10/2021 13:26

I agree, from what I've seen the projects are great.
But let's not pretend that the founder or instigator catches a train to his Norfolk retreat or an electric/hybrid car!

Smilesy, it might well be about the same trip, they were observed helicoptering to Norfolk (caught out!)
It's the times they aren't observed we should be concerned about! Just because you can't find an article on it, you shouldn't be satisfied that they don't! They're not going to publicise that they commute by helicopter regularly are they??

Why can't they send out a clear message that they have procured an electric car and the 100 mile journey will be done by that.
With the RF it's always what we don't know that concerns me.
You can bet your bottom dollar that if they were travelling in a green way, we'd know about it! Look at the huge fuss about an easyJet flight.! The press are briefed for 'good' publicity

smilesy · 05/10/2021 13:36

Taking a helicopter may well be the most economical way for the Cambridges to travel, though. If they travelled by road, there would be several accompanying vehicles with protection officers needed and also the route would need scouting beforehand. Given that our infrastructure for electric cars is still woefully inadequate, an electric car would probably not be very practical, especially all the way to Norfolk, which is not the easiest of places to access. As you say, Roussette, we don’t really know.

julieca · 05/10/2021 13:40

Why would the route need scouting beforehand? They use helicopters to travel between residences, they are not going to Beirut.

julieca · 05/10/2021 13:42

They travel by helicopter because it is quicker and they can't get caught in traffic. But it is not at all environmental.
No one is doubting that the projects are good. We are doubting Williams sincerity.

smilesy · 05/10/2021 13:43

I know this happens. For a fact. A friend of ours is in special protection. It is in case there are hold ups etc. Can’t have the royals stuck in a traffic jam. And they can’t rely on Google maps 🤣

Roussette · 05/10/2021 13:46

Nice try Smilesy!

They are the very worst for air pollution, a really bad way to travel for anyone caring about green issues.
I think I do know, it will be their mode of transport without a doubt and no I won't find that in Google because the RF hide what they don't want us to know

Electric cars can travel 100 miles! Two of my neighbours have put in electric car points in the last year, I hope Amner Hall has Confused

I imagine it’s a lot quicker and there is less security needed too. Is it less environmentally friendly than being driven in a huge SUV with accompanying security detail.?

Sorry I’m basically repeating what you already sent aid!

Electric cars

Helicopters have an awful reputation environmentally.

Washeduponthebeach · 05/10/2021 13:53

But it’s okay when H and M take them in your view?

Roussette · 05/10/2021 13:55

Gosh I didn't realise H&M were the subject of this thread and live over here as working Royals?😂

smilesy · 05/10/2021 13:55

No one is doubting that the projects are good. We are doubting Williams sincerity

Previously you have rubbished the Earthshot prize as small scale and individual projects that make no difference. Since it has been pointed out that actually this project is neither of these, and is worthwhile, you have changed tack to doubting William’s sincerity as you put it. I am not clear as to why he is not allowed to be credited with having a good idea and following it through, much as Harry did with Invictus. Do you believe the sincerity of all celebrities or wealthy individuals who espouse good causes? Do you expect them all to be paragons of virtue who do not have to negotiate real life issues like practical transportation options?

smilesy · 05/10/2021 14:13

They are the very worst for air pollution, a really bad way to travel for anyone caring about green issues.

They are indeed bad for local air pollution, yes. But they are lots of variables when choosing the most appropriate way to travel. I don't imagine that green travel can always be at the top of the list for the royals and other high profile people, as per the Guardian article I linked to. Obviously, that should change, but at the moment, it is what it is. Hopefully the Earthshot prize may be able to support potential solutions to this 🤷‍♀️It is 119 miles from KP to Anmer, so they wouldn’t quite make it. 🤣

Roussette · 05/10/2021 14:19

Haha, I said 100 miles but obviously they can do far more!

A Tesla can go over 400 miles, and even a VW does 350!

We have a hybrid and have done for a long time since they first came out, but we are working towards electric

smilesy · 05/10/2021 14:27

Be careful though, Rousette, my DH has a real bee in his bonnet about electric cars and has done a lot of research. These high mileages can only be achieved under ideal circumstances (much like the maximum MPG for the internal combustion engine), so make sure you look into reviews on real world usage. They are excellent if you only make short journeys though.

Samcro · 05/10/2021 15:04

@Washeduponthebeach

But it’s okay when H and M take them in your view?
H&M get whole threads slagging them off. Its funny that they then get talked about on a thread about PW not green behaviour. is that the only defence? PH does it so its ok that PW does it? or should PW practice what he preaches seeing as he fronts the tv show the thread is about?

julieca · 05/10/2021 15:11

@smilesy No, I said they are good projects but are not enough to prevent the impacts of climate change.
We are not asking them to cycle between their various palaces or even get a public bus. But flying helicopters between various mansions is extreme. They must have an enormous carbon footprint.
