could not believe it when I saw the advert for it last night. so PW is presenting this thing. the same Prince who flies all over the world.
obviously won't be watching as him and DA lecturing people about climate change is so hypocritical.

I would much rather see positive action and solutions than just demands for change. The Earthshot initiative seems to be forward looking and full of hope which is much more engaging. Most people don’t react well to being scolded. The projects highlighted have had real impact already. I didn’t know, for example, that there was such a thing as sustainable palm oil projects in Borneo. And this is not just about climate change, it is about nature, waste, clean air and reducing waste as well.

StormzyinaTCup · 04/10/2021 20:02

But what is happening now with the motorways and Insulate Britain is the right thing to do.

Not when your trying to reach your 81year old mum who has been taken to hospital in an ambulance and some idiot is sitting in the road. That behaviour is in no way to be applauded.

There is not such a thing as sustainable palm oil, it is greenwashing. Lots of articles exposing this concept.
smilesy · 04/10/2021 20:20

@julieca. Tell that to Sir David Attenborough.

julieca · 04/10/2021 20:23

David Attenborough has been raising the issue for decades and decades. He was one of the first high profile people to do so. Totally different scenario.

smilesy · 04/10/2021 20:31

Well he (David Attenborough) was highlighting some farmers that are producing palm oil sustainably on the programme. I’m sure that large corporations are guilty of greenwashing, but not the farmer highlighted last night 🤷‍♀️ I’m no expert and I personally try to avoid products containing palm oil anyway but it was interesting. I think you need to watch it if you want to give an informed opinion.

I was on Twitter and saw a post about Prince William which may interest OP.

He studied Geography at St Andrews and took climate change modules. His dissertation was on coral reefs of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean. He earned a 2:1

I know that there are more highly knowledgeable people who study for decades but it sounds like he has a genuine interest in climate change.

rubicscubicle · 04/10/2021 22:06

William changed his art degree to geography because he found it too difficult, not because he was passionate about the environment. There was a documentary about this.

Serenster · 04/10/2021 22:17

He had an A level in Geography also though, so presumably had some existing interest in the topic.

julieca · 04/10/2021 22:43

God you are really reaching now.

This article from the Guardian in 2002 says that he wanted to change because he was more interested in the environment. He was also finding university life difficult in general at first. It’s an interesting read.

julieca · 04/10/2021 22:48

It is a shame then that he has not translated that interest to his personal behaviour.

I read that he changed because he was unable to go to the art museums he was expected to frequent without protection officers and a lot of fuss. He found it embarrassing and complex to manage. Presumably trips arranged by the Uni would exclude him in that basis too. I can see why that was a issue.
SallyLockheart · 05/10/2021 05:44

Julieca, I’ve no idea how old you are but are you exactly the same person - attitude to life, personality and interests - as you were when you were 18?

SallyLockheart · 05/10/2021 05:59

Julieca again.

And did you have an avid interest in the RF at 18 - did you read everything you could about Diana and her sons?

Does your view that William has no interest in climate change because he didn’t at 18 reflect your own fixed life experience whereby you haven’t moved on one iota since being a teenager?

julieca · 05/10/2021 10:59

Of course, peoples interests change, but I don't see any commitment at all to the environment from William. If there was at a minimum he would not be taking helicopter flights to get home more quickly. I mean it's hardly wearing a hair shirt to stop doing this.
I actually just think this whole thing is greenwashing. Pretending to be interested in the environment while not making the tiniest bit of effort to reduce your own environmental footprint.

smilesy · 05/10/2021 11:26

Does anybody have a link to William taking helicopters to get hime more quickly. I have googled and all I can find is that he used a helicopter so that he could keep up his flying hours and keep his licence (minimum of two hours per year needed). Happy for someone to correct me.
But to be fair julieca you still wouldn’t be happy if he walked everywhere barefoot!🤣

julieca · 05/10/2021 11:53

No that is not true. An enormous difference between taking helicopters instead of a car to get home, and walking barefoot.

derxa · 05/10/2021 11:57

Julieca, do have regular chats with PW to assert with such confidence that he has no real commitment to the environment?

Does he have to do further degrees, netflix programmes etc. to satisfy your relentless statements.

You haven't really answered my question as to whether you are exactly the same as you were as a teenager. Have you studied and got qualification and worked hard to demonstrate your new beliefs if you have any?

Harry also support climate change activism but what has he demonstrably done in the past? And then add in the private jet from New York to Californa when there are lots of commercial flights in recent days hours after the global live concert in support of climate change.

Do you equally call out Harry for shallow wishy washy commitment to environmental issues while having an equally huge carbon foot print as the rest of the royal family? Carbon offsetting, btw, is no substitute for actually flying less and particularly cutting out private jets.

Roussette · 05/10/2021 12:29

smilesy if you Google William and Kate helicopters from KP to Anmer hall, the first five links are showing this

Roussette · 05/10/2021 12:29

(and that's just the trips we know about! I imagine they use it like we'd catch a train or bus)

Roussette · 05/10/2021 12:31

I thought this thread was about W and his green credentials, nice swerve into Harry's there!

julieca · 05/10/2021 12:44

Between April 2018 and April 2019, 204 journeys were made on royal helicopters which cost a total of £688,845. Regulations permit the royals to use public funds to travel from residence to residence, trips they often make by helicopter.

SallyLockheart · 05/10/2021 12:45

The thread is about the Earthshot prize.

That is a separate topic to William and Harry’s past demonstration of environment interests. Do no more of a swerve than julieca.
