The royal family

In what capacity are Harry and Meghan visiting New York

IsabelBeck · 25/09/2021 10:20

They are no longer working members of the Royal Family so have they gone to New York as private citizens?

How do they get to meet with Chelsea Clinton at the WHO offices and UN officials and politicians?

According to the Mail (I know, I know) they had federal protection.

Do Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (as they are styled there) have much clout in the US? Why?

Lots will miss the detail and assume H&M were involved in the UN assembly Representing the The kingdom of Montecito Grin,

Gilmorehill · 28/09/2021 16:06

Posters do realise the UN general assembly is an ongoing thing, like parliament. It’s not an event.

😂😂😂 kingdom of Montecito
Marmaladeagain · 28/09/2021 16:29

No, I don’t know how UN works but I know Scobie put out: Sussexes meet the UN Secretary General ....and it is his second royal appointment this week... met with Queen Maxima etc

I know the UN has lots of famous people it can use as ambassadors and that is where H&M fall they are not someone with input such as Queen Maxima. They looked plain daft sweeping into town as if they’re a head of state etc

Tis another bit of Harry’s juggling - throw up some bits of info in the air and hoping no-one notices the inconsistencies, but this time it was pointed out that it was not true and was required to be removed.

That’s progress against the subjective truth Harry spouts. No there is actual truth.

Marmaladeagain · 28/09/2021 16:48

No, I don't think a Kingdom, I mean Disney beat them to that in the US after all. Kudos to Walt.

I think they're after their own small US principality - or perhaps something along lines of a new Vatican City? The citizenship is small currently but there is certainly a religous zeal to some commentators on twitter and I can imagine some would be forming a queue to join and hand over their money.

Have to be careful not to create a cult instead of a principality along the way though....hmmm

queenofarles · 28/09/2021 16:51

Yes we know how the annual general assembly works, heads of states and delegations meet up and each state gives a speech,
Timing your visit just when all of the worlds leaders are in town is a very clever move , "yes we are on that level" of importance.

The whole trip reminded it me of the Obama’s state dinner gate crashers Grin,

artquejtion · 28/09/2021 17:19

"So they all do it then - Clinton/ Gates/ Obama's / Royals / Bono etc I assume so why do UK media and MN get so irate as if M&H are the first and committing a criminal offence and add all the personal insults if that is how the system works for other high profiles?"

Those listed above, plus others such as Oprah, the Clooneys, Beyonce, the Federers, all have long established and lucrative careers, either in politics, business, sport or entertainment, and their philanthropy is an aside to their careers and does appear to be a case of 'giving back' .

The Sussexes are different in that respect, so It is understandable then, that there might be scepticism around their philanthropy and their charitable foundation, as H&M NEED to make a career out of their philanthropy, rather than it being the other way around. I think that is why they get so much flack, as It can be construed as not being authentic nor truly philanthropic.

shamalidacdak · 28/09/2021 18:51

@Viviennemary

They are acting then as King and Queen of the USA because they can't get the job they really wanted. King and Queen of the UK. Its all becoming clearer. We'll have to see how that plays out.
This sums it up. And what about the bullying investigation? When is that being held?
BananaPB · 28/09/2021 19:01

Some people think that they might release the details when Harry's memoir comes out in December

julieca · 29/09/2021 11:18

I don't care if they are acting as the King and Queen of the US. We are not paying for it, they can do what they want.

Viviennemary · 29/09/2021 11:28

Well I do care. And they need to be stopped.

julieca · 29/09/2021 11:30

Why do you care what strangers do?

BeckyWithTheAverageHair · 29/09/2021 11:35

they need to be stopped.

🤣🤣🤣

Viviennemary · 29/09/2021 11:36

The pair are receiving a lot of criticism for their pseudo royal behaviour in a country that doesn't have royals. They have been heavily criticised in Australia for their antics in New York. In what capacity are they meeting with politicians. As royals or ordinary citizens? This was asked and it needs to be clarified.

julieca · 29/09/2021 11:37

They are not officially part of the Royal Family. It is up to politicians who they meet with.

BeckyWithTheAverageHair · 29/09/2021 11:40

Have they? Maybe by the Murdoch press but your average Australian couldn't care less. With half the country in lockdown, we've got bigger things to worry about.

julieca · 29/09/2021 11:46

I am wondering what pseudo-Royal behaviour is?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 29/09/2021 12:04

I wouldn't mind at all if they succeeded. It's just intriguing from a sociological perspective. The royal family have been getting away with holding onto considerable wealth and indirect influence in the UK for a long time, deemed acceptable because of tradition, habit, existing infrastructure, rules/laws etc.

When H&M seek to set up something of a vaguely similar nature in the USA, it does rather remind you of the somewhat arbitrary nature of hierarchies based on birthright and connections.

summercupcake · 29/09/2021 12:52

As long as we aren't paying for it I don't care. America always wanted a royal family, now they have one, everyone's happy.

I do wish they'd stop hurting their family members so publicly (both hers and his), that should've been done privately.

queenofarles · 29/09/2021 14:10

America has its own share of powerful established families, Koch, Tisch , bush , not necessarily top wealthiest but their names are so powerful they don’t need to ask favours to meet people in high places.
H&M are popular with some but certainly not the Majority.
Contrary to what is portrayed , Americans loathe preachy woke celebs. Come to think of it , Honestly H&M should thank the daily Mail for keeping them relevant , otherwise they would have been buried by national American news a long time ago.

julieca · 29/09/2021 14:16

America is an enormous place. What goes down well in California is not what goes down well in Texas. Anyone declaring what America thinks does not understand America.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 29/09/2021 15:25

I see posters on here are avoiding mentioning that H&M donated 25K towards Melba's employee relief fund

Actually what the tweet from the Melba's account said about that was intriguing. It thanked them for their 'commitment to donate $25K'. The tweet is here if anyone wants a look
twitter.com/MelbasHarlem/status/1441496823584022531?s=19

Whatever that might mean, I would presume that at the time of writing / tweeting, the offer had been made but the money was not yet in the Melba bank account (shades of Father Ted). I also think it's an odd choice of wording if payment is expected soon. It makes it sound like something that will actually happen at some future point, when cash flow has been resolved.

indeed, a bit of an IOU. Could it also be a bit 'Only Fools and Horses" when I'm a miluinaire" (or in their case multi-millionaire) we'll get you the money when we've won it by all sorts of charidee tax planning (just not quite enough to spin it out just yet).

They had plenty in the bank but decided it was not enough to live the almost billionaire lifestyle they desire.

Mere millionaires are not flying around in private jets so they need to keep borrowing jets etc. it's just not on, they want big time money.

Just weird why people are so keen to support such avariciousness
dressed up as "charidee".

Putting horse before cart etc. I'll spend like there's no tomorrow, but I'll work on how to earn it next year I'm sure someone will give me a handout because "we're worth it" Cheryl Cole stylee.

They already have. I'm a New Yorker and had no idea that they were here for UN General Assembly until I heard about it on MN. Asking most Americans what they think about H&M would be like asking them what they think about Marmite or steak and kidney pie. It's too far outside of our normal frame of reference to have an opinion on.

Zuluqueen · 29/09/2021 20:57

Well I know somehow doubt they wouldn’t donate to Melba. I didn’t know about about her restaurant last time I was in New York. So here is hoping to be visiting her restaurant in the New Year. I could do with some soul food, (fried chicken , waffles & collard greens😭). So yep thanks HaM for making this sister aware🤷‍♀️
