The royal family

In what capacity are Harry and Meghan visiting New York

They are no longer working members of the Royal Family so have they gone to New York as private citizens?

How do they get to meet with Chelsea Clinton at the WHO offices and UN officials and politicians?

According to the Mail (I know, I know) they had federal protection.

Do Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (as they are styled there) have much clout in the US? Why?

At the time he discussed it he was only being papped in UK - and the context is that the UK media is very toxic he had experience with his mother and later and the time he discussed it his wife also.

He has Moved away for sometime now they are not hand in hand with the IK tabloids and the environment he is now in is very different to the UK. So consequently what he is experiencing now would be different to how it was in the UK back when he spoke about it. So the comparism of soldiers being triggered at anytime - after the event - yes but in most cases once they leave the army they very really hear bombs going off in real Life. So yes it will always be trigger. H on the other hand is photoed all the time so he is able to adjust - I think it was the experience and intensity of the toxic Uk press that added to his issues and fears for Meghan and Archie at the time.

I think there's a difference between having photographers taking your picture at a planned event like this concert and having paparazzi in your face when you're just going out for dinner or to the gum, as it was for Diana.

AnnunciataZ · 26/09/2021 20:11

The gym!

Serenster · 26/09/2021 20:14

When Harry was asked by Tom Bradbury in South Africa if he felt at peace or if the memory of the death of his mother is still "a sort of wound that festers," he said: "I think probably a wound that festers.I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back, so in that respect it's the worst reminder of her life, as opposed to the best”

In “The Me You don’t See” he said “ The clicking of cameras and the flashes of cameras makes my blood boil. It makes me angry. It takes me back to what happened to my mum and what I experienced when I was a kid”.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 26/09/2021 20:25

So when you see him now and compared to when he was in the UK do you think his anger is as intense as it was then? Is he not referring to Pappz as opposed to organised events?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 26/09/2021 20:31

Hmmm, what Harry describes sounds like a visceral response to clicks and flashes, whatever the context. I think even planned photocalls must be rather stressful.

This is footage from their One World Trade Centre photocall - I can just about see the think bubble above Harry's head: 'Oh God, smile Harry, smile, oh God, how long is this going to last!?'

Meghan looks more relaxed.

rubicscubicle · 26/09/2021 20:43

I did not see any tension as much as when the UK press were present. Even when they were in SA, around Bishop Tutu and the local people, they obviously had issues to sort with the UK press, but they were more laid back. I noticed the same with most engagements in the US. You can see they feel less judged. In particular, I found him looking very much at home with Archbishop Tutu and Prince Seeiso.

rubicscubicle · 26/09/2021 20:47

@smilesy

I’m no expert, and I’m not saying he made anything up. I just think to interpret it as only applying in the UK is a bit unrealistic. It would surely apply if he was taken by surprise anywhere. Otherwise, why do soldiers who are back in the safety of their own homes get triggered by bangs and crashes?
But Harry knows who the RRs are. The individuals like Rebecca English, Camilla T, Russel M etc. He knows their faces, and surely knows what snark will come out of the whole thing the next day.
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 26/09/2021 20:50

But rubics what he himself reports is a more general response.

rubicscubicle · 26/09/2021 20:55

It was a general response about the British media as that is where they were based at the time, and the rota was who was covering them. Did you expect him to name names? I imagine he would say all of them in that case.

smilesy · 26/09/2021 20:57

You can see they feel less judged. Confused

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 26/09/2021 20:57

You are inferring more than I would from the comments he made but I guess we will have to agree to differ on the matter.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 26/09/2021 20:58

Sorry that was to rubics.

smilesy · 26/09/2021 21:00

But Harry knows who the RRs are.. He does, but what has that got to do with cameras clicking?

rubicscubicle · 26/09/2021 21:06

Erm.......how do I put this.
A click of the camera means a photo in a paper (usually the mail or other rag), and that photo will be accompanied by an article, usually written by a royal reporter - one of the named.

At least that is how it usually works.

Shellfishblastard · 26/09/2021 21:08

I don’t see the problem with Harry capitalising on the fact that he is a member of the RF. He isn’t a senior working Royal now but he is still part of the family and that won’t change. Why shouldn’t he benefit from that to some extent?

smilesy · 26/09/2021 21:14

Yes I realise that, but I think it’s overthinking a bit to say that that is what is behind his dislike of the cameras.

smilesy · 26/09/2021 21:15

That was to @rubicscubicle

rubicscubicle · 26/09/2021 21:18

@OutwiththeOutCrowd

There is not much to interpret there though.

He was a senior royal at the time of the interview, and only a small segment which is the Royal Rota was allowed to take pictures and follow them around. ITV, Mail and other rags. They would then share the information with the rest of the international media. So he was only talking about one group.

queenofarles · 26/09/2021 21:23

Why is Mayor family there ? Is it common practice?

Leibham · 26/09/2021 22:34

@Shellfishblastard He could, the Netflix deals etc which no one could really say anything about. It’s them trying to act like they’re saviours for ‘the voiceless’ which rubs people up the wrong way.

I'm not the one starting thread to slag off H&M and pretending it's just a discussion

Nor am I. I can't be held responsible for other posters' conduct.

Surprised they didn't take the children too, even if they stayed out of sight at the hotel. Lili is still only a tiny baby.

Roussette · 27/09/2021 06:31

They could well have done. Well done them for keeping them out of the public's gaze. I really admire them for that.

There are certain celebrities over here who always managed to avoid pictures of their children, and I thought that was great. And then there's those with continual Hello spreads!

I think they're making the right decision to avoid the inevitable scrutiny from the likes of the DM (who must be so frustrated they aren't getting the clickbait of their kids' pictures)

artquejtion · 27/09/2021 13:35

@Washeduponthebeach

I wonder if the heavy costs M has been wearing are to disguise recording equipment.
You could be right !

I wondered why she was wearing those oversized winter clothes, she is normally so elegant and classy.
