Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

OP posts:
Aquamarine1029 · 17/08/2021 18:45

It's utterly ridiculous to have expected them to criticise Biden.

DesperateForSun · 17/08/2021 18:47

It’s meaningless drivel

PicsInRed · 17/08/2021 18:47

At least they made a statement.

If they criticised Biden they'd be accused of politics.

They didn't criticise him so they're accused of politics.

🤷‍♀️

Cillmantain · 17/08/2021 18:48

I think they never miss an opportunity to promote themselves.

bakingdemon · 17/08/2021 18:48

Would have been better to have stayed silent. Utter twaddle.

StarryStarrySocks · 17/08/2021 18:48

🙄 Why do they feel the need to make a statement in this? Do they realise that saying nothing is an option?

greenlynx · 17/08/2021 18:48

It’s too long.

ssd · 17/08/2021 18:49

I dont really care what they say, i dont know them.

burritofan · 17/08/2021 18:49

How about everyone should be making statements on this? FFS. Of course they should use their enormous fame to speak out. Anything else would be irresponsible.

mum2jakie · 17/08/2021 18:50

Well they may as well have said nothing. That statement says nowt really, doesn't it? Confused

derxa · 17/08/2021 18:51

,

CorrBlimeyGG · 17/08/2021 18:51

Prince Harry served in Afghanistan. He also leads the Invictus Games and supports many veteran support projects. I guess that's why he felt the need to make a statement.

BoarOnTheFloor · 17/08/2021 18:52

Why do they feel the need to make a statement in this? Do they realise that saying nothing is an option?

Agreed. I don’t like the hate they get but really, did they have to say something? It’s always so wordy as well.

ManonDesSauce · 17/08/2021 18:52

They should have stopped at "we are left speechless."

RichTeaTime · 17/08/2021 18:53

Well, they should hand over their ill-gotten gains to charity and go and work overseas for Oxfam or similar. Then they can advise others.

ARudeTerriblePerson · 17/08/2021 18:53

Agree with Burritofan. They should speak out. They have fame. They have no right to fiddle while Rome burns.

SueSaid · 17/08/2021 18:54

It's almost poetic. 'As we all watch, as we all witness, as we all feel..'. Confused

We need some rousing Hollywood music playing in the background to accompany it.

We can but be thankful their dialogue has finally expanded from 'shining lights' and being 'authentic'.

Does seem odd that they haven't criticised the rushed withdrawal by the US causing the mayhem and panic isn't it, can guarantee if Trump was still in power they'd have found their voices to do so.

As always, tone deaf gushing guff.

GintyMcGinty · 17/08/2021 18:54

Who the feck do they think they are?

ARudeTerriblePerson · 17/08/2021 18:55

Harry has probably been asked to speak out by Invictus veterans.

SueSaid · 17/08/2021 18:55

@GintyMcGinty

Who the feck do they think they are?
Saviours of the world.
ladysunshine · 17/08/2021 18:58

Word salad. I'm speechless.

RichTeaTime · 17/08/2021 18:58

to alleviate suffering among those we know

Are they going to apologise for their criticism of the royals??

Candleabra · 17/08/2021 19:00

It's almost poetic. 'As we all watch, as we all witness, as we all feel..'.

I hate this way of speaking. Especially about such serious matters. It sounds like a poor creative writing project. It sounds completely insincere and, in my opinion, detracts from any message they may be trying to convey.

Bryonyshcmyony · 17/08/2021 19:01

@BoarOnTheFloor

Why do they feel the need to make a statement in this? Do they realise that saying nothing is an option?

Agreed. I don’t like the hate they get but really, did they have to say something? It’s always so wordy as well.

My sentiments exactly

I feel quite sorry for them normally but really? They need to learn when to shut up - they aren't even royal are they?

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 19:04

I can see the POVs about speaking out and using their platform. Idk how popular H&M really are in the US as to how well this statement will be taken over there. I can see that POV. However, I don’t like the tone of the message. It’s talking about ‘us’ and the sickening poetry, yes.

I definitely don’t feel like I’m in it with multi millionaires, who cut their families out and very publicly tore them to shreds on the international stage. So why not talk about the people of the world?

Additionally my feeling is that Harry and his Britishness is being completely subsumed. I spelt organisation and realisation according to British spelling btw when they both have z’s in the text. Using these spellings and ‘fall’ really gives the impression to me at least that this is driven by Meghan and Harry is slowly being subsumed.
