Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

Self-important, patronising and frankly insulting mentioning their heartbreak and feeling "layers of pain" with us.

How can they honestly hold their heads up and say "a piece of us suffers with them" when they live in such a privileged circumstances in the land of the free? It's tone deaf! Who is doing their PR?

Fair enough if he had said "as a veteran of Afghanistan I stand alongside my former colleagues and friends at this very difficult time for the country and its people, and my wife is redoubling her efforts with the UN in the area of women's education" then leave it at that.

FrippEnos · 17/08/2021 20:32

Why2why

What is getting boring is any criticism is seen by some as hate.

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:32

Why did you lose my point. How very convenient

Not convenient. Just didn't get it. Sorry.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 17/08/2021 20:33

I’m not fans of theirs at all and usually find them to be shamelessly self serving but, of everything in the Kabul situation, I’m really not offended by it.
They’re highlighting the issue at least.

I’m not sure if they actually went on to name which charities to support. That would have been helpful.

It’s a very dreamy and ineffective statement but there’s much worse going on right now that I’m actually sickened by. Harry and Meghan are just outputting their usual “nice, beige, homemade chicken pie” brand.

My opinion of them has remained exactly the same.

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:34

Janiie

I know he has made a statement but could you direct me to the US law that says he can't say anything else, and certainly nothing with Meghan?
Because I have googled that. Can't find it.
Your nitpicking is getting very silly.

SugarCaneHarvest · 17/08/2021 20:36

Seem weird and cringeworthy. I think the issue is they don't have social media. If they had Twitter or Instagram they could put out their feelings on world events and it would seem more normal.

These issuing of statements, makes it come across as though they think the world is waiting for their view and guidance on the matter before acting. People only expect statements from leaders, political or religious etc. - the President, the PM, World Leaders, the Pope etc.

Bizarre as a ' private couple' to start issuing public statements on world events they have no direct involvement in.

StCharlotte · 17/08/2021 20:38

@CorrBlimeyGG

Prince Harry served in Afghanistan. He also leads the Invictus Games and supports many veteran support projects. I guess that's why he felt the need to make a statement.
Yes, it will be close to his heart.

(Unless it really was a statement by the Duke and Duchess of "Suffolk" who's about 600 years old Wink)

WinnieTheW0rm · 17/08/2021 20:39

I find it a bit of a curious statement.

Harry's posting and work with veterans would, I would have thought, have led to a much more personal statement.

Haiti doesn't hold the same personal importance for either of them. So it just seems rather odd to juxtapose the two

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:39

The Meghan and Harry hatred club is boring and pass its sell by date. Britain just looks bitter now

^^ This.

It's just looking pathetic now to be honest. They live in the US, they can make a statement if they want. And all this piers morgany stropping about the place because they have just looks ridiculous. I think it must be a bit triggering for some people, perhaps they should just hide the threads, and the DailyFail, and avoid them. That's what I do with people that annoy me.

Especially given the Balmoral One (or is it eight?)

I’m not sure if they actually went on to name which charities to support. That would have been helpful

Yes they did and I've listed a few upthread

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:40

Haiti doesn't hold the same personal importance for either of them

They've been very involved with World Central Kitchen. It has one of their hubs in Haiti which is now providing meals to those displaced.

Why2why · 17/08/2021 20:40

@FrippEnos it is hate isn’t it? There is an obsession with turning everything they do into an issue. Obsessively following their every move and criticising them is borne out of an irrational hatred.

It’s not by the by criticism. It’s an obsession. The ridiculous thing is that these people left Britain, gave you back your money and is getting on with their lives. Yet your focus is on them and your criticism is on them instead of those you continue to fund. Is it not odd that you focus your energy on these two people who you no longer fund and no longer lives in Britain but you are not too bothered by the infractions of those living here and whom you fund?

These two people are clearly doing well for themselves. Didn’t Meghan’s voice over for the elephant documentary win an award?

These people keep winning whilst some Brits criticise. The criticisms seems to be a special preserve of the Brits because by the awards, accolades and support they are getting outside of little Britain says a lot.

BrilloPaddy · 17/08/2021 20:41

The words "jumping" and "bandwagon" spring to mind............

ManonDesSauce · 17/08/2021 20:41

Oh give over.

Why2why · 17/08/2021 20:44

Harry and Meghan has and are doing a lot for Commonwealth countries including Haiti. Whilst some of you get drunk on the negative nonsense reported in the press, people on the ground and those who are involved in humanitarian efforts know what they are doing.

To say or think they’ve only just gotten involved in Haiti is demonstrating how truly brainwashed and drunk on British media selective reporting on these two some of you are.

Lovelydovey · 17/08/2021 20:46

@bakingdemon

Would have been better to have stayed silent. Utter twaddle.
This
unnumber · 17/08/2021 20:47

It's just a bit soppy, innit? Lots of people post like that. I deduce that lots of people can read posts like that through without wincing and are influenced by them. Fine. Good, in this case.

They have an audience. It's not this thread, it seems. They like being a couply couple. So do lots of people. Harry rolling out to say, I'm doing this, oh and my wife is doing something too, would be deeply weird anyway.

Hoppinggreen · 17/08/2021 20:47

Haiti is not in the commonwealth. It was a French colony 🤣

KateTheEighth · 17/08/2021 20:51

Sussex

Not Suffolk

But usual pointless wank that won't change a thing

LolaSmiles · 17/08/2021 21:01

Piers Moron is going spare, and everyone's forgotten about the alleged antics of a certain mummy's boy currently holed up at Balmoral!
Did you miss the thread concerning a certain somebody? There's plenty of people talking about it, although depressingly lots of us had to stand up to rape apologists on that thread.

Either way, I don't think the "but why don't people focus on Andrew" arguments work. Harry and Meghan actively place themselves in the media and do regular press releases. Andrew doesn't. The people who do regular publicity and press releases will have more media attention on them than someone hiding at home.

@ManonDesSauce

They should have stopped at "we are left speechless."
This!!!
FrippEnos · 17/08/2021 21:33

@Why2why

Is it really hate to point out that saying they will "support" these organisations but not actually say what that support is is pointless?

It was similar with the 40 X 40 other than people will give 40 minutes of their time what will actually happen? What is the criteria for success?

They say a lot but a lot of what they say means little or actually has them doing very little.

I am also assuming that you are using "you" and "your" as a generalisation. but you do you.

Cheeeeislifenow · 17/08/2021 21:48

Is it really hate to point out that saying they will "support" these organisations but not actually say what that support is is pointless?

They did....op conveniently left that bit out.
Also for those saying that only harry should comment as he has been to Afghanistan...does Meghan as a woman not get to comment, presumably the terrifying situation of women being stripped of their rights is something she shouldn't comment on?
Also for those if you who continue bto complain about them? Why on earth do ye keep starting these threads? It's pretty obvious and a bit embarrassing
