Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

The traditional British -ize spelling - www.theguardian.com/science/shortcuts/2019/apr/18/ize-on-the-prize-is-prince-charles-the-last-guardian-of-british-spelling

Anyway, people who aren't fans on their world view and rhetoric aren't likely to be influenced by their posts. People who are, may be - so let them at it. The more voices on this issue, the better. And I don't think we need "Harry's words", any more than we need the rest of the family to write their own speeches or tweet their own tweets. He's never claimed to be a wordsmith that I've noticed
@BeckyWithTheAverageHair

I’m talking about the statement for which they’ve been berated by the likes of Piers Morgan. How ridiculous to presume I missed out the organisations to paint them in a poor light.
It's the same as the statement on their website, which then goes on to link to various aid organisations. This can be found out with a simple Google. Piers Morgan is hardly an unbiased source when it comes to the Sussexes!

SueSaid · 17/08/2021 19:59

'Did you miss the reference to Haiti? I don't keep ignoring anything'

No I didn't miss it.

My comment 'You keep ignoring the fact he had already made a statement regarding invictus and Afghanistan' was in response to this 'who has served two stints in Afghanistan and who was instrumental in founding the Invictus Games where hundreds of veterans served.'

So those saying ah but he served in Afghanistan keep missing the point. He had already made a statement about it. If the Sussex's then want to make a general overly long virtue signalling speech shoe horning Haiti into it fine, but he has already spoken about Afghanistan so this looks typically like opportunity grabbing, again.

Heyha · 17/08/2021 19:59

I don't think this the statement that jars, is it, it's the wording and floweryness of it.

The Invictus statement is much closer to Harry saying basically he's devastated at the loss of the progress made, with lives lost and changed during his time in Afghanistan. And for her to then add something about please consider how this is going to work for women now and offer your support to organisations who can help, absolutely fine.

A big old load of her usual vomit-inducing fluff-speak prose, no thanks, most people won't get to the end where the actual useful bit is. She need to learn the value of brevity if she wants to have any actual impact on the wider stage.

catinboots21 · 17/08/2021 20:00

@Roussette

* They are married and obviously it would be a joint statement

Do you deliver joint statements with your husband regarding his job?

Heyha · 17/08/2021 20:01

Yes and the random insertion of Haiti which could easily have warranted a shorter statement specifically about that earlier in the week, working on th assumption that they do actually care that much. But not enough to speak at the time? 🤔

PicsInRed · 17/08/2021 20:01

These are clearly not his words and not in British English.

Yes, quelle horreur, spirit of the bulldog, etc. 🇬🇧

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:02

Janiie

Lost your point in that post. But no. World Central Kitchen is in Haiti. It would look odd just to make a joint statement and only mention Haiti. Can't Meghan speak on it too?
Given the dire situation for women in Afghanistan, I would've thought so....

Oldbutstillgotit · 17/08/2021 20:03

But what actually are they planning to do ?
Harry made a statement which I thought was fair enough given that he served in Afghanistan however not sure why a joint statement had to be issued .

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:03

Do you deliver joint statements with your husband regarding his job?

He's retired.

This isn't about 'jobs' anyway

dancealittleclosertome · 17/08/2021 20:03

They're just using these awful situations to raise their own profile, that's all. The world is indeed watching, so they're going to make sure they're seen. Precisely why Harry is releasing his memoir next year - to ride on the back of the Queen's jubilee.

AnnunciataZ · 17/08/2021 20:06

Really, the royals should be grateful to Harry and Meghan for this. Because suddenly everyone's talking about them again, Piers Moron is going spare, and everyone's forgotten about the alleged antics of a certain mummy's boy currently holed up at Balmoral!

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:07

I think some posters on here need to email them and set out exactly why you don't like the words they use, and what sort of words you would like them to use, and how long each statement should be, and what they should mention and what they shouldn't mention
😂

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:08

Piers Moron is going spare, and everyone's forgotten about the alleged antics of a certain mummy's boy currently holed up at Balmoral!

I haven't!

AnnunciataZ · 17/08/2021 20:08

I certainly didn't mean you @Roussette!

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:09

Yes, back to check on my PA thread... see what's happening 😂😁

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 20:10

Yes@BeckyWithTheAverageHair
I was referring back to my question. In my op. I wasn’t asking for a critique on the links.

@Rousette @PicsInRed
The point is not a snobby objection to a British v American style, which you both interpreted my comment to mean. I would like to see Harry’s voice, Harry making an impact. Harry being the driver.

OP posts:
PamDenick · 17/08/2021 20:15

Anyways, we obviously ARE all concerned about Haitiand Afghanistan and if it’ll encourage a few donations then that’s fine...

Roussette · 17/08/2021 20:15

Fair enough. It just sounded a bit 'toodle pip old chap'
😂

PamDenick · 17/08/2021 20:18

Perhaps it’s made them appreciate why the royal family have to be non-political: you can’t support Buden when he has made such a heinous error...

Also, and I think Harry might not have learnt this during his multithousand pound education, being non political is the compromise the royals took for not getting their heads chopped off...

PamDenick · 17/08/2021 20:18

*Biden

TheWayTheLightFalls · 17/08/2021 20:19

If they felt obliged to say anything (and I think there are people the world needs to hear from more, tbh), there are more succinct ways to do it, tied in to their own experience.

SueSaid · 17/08/2021 20:20

'Lost your point in that post. But no. '

Why did you lose my point. How very convenient 😂. Here, I'll try again. He had already made a statement about Afghanistan regarding his invictus links.

That clearer?

Bonmonkhouse · 17/08/2021 20:28

It's like a sermon. My head read it in the voice of an irish priest.

Why2why · 17/08/2021 20:28

They can say what they want. You don’t like it tough. Save the outrage for the alleged rapist.

The Meghan and Harry hatred club is boring and pass its sell by date. Britain just looks bitter now. These people are in the US and the British media constantly feasting on everything they do and say. Britain media behave like a jilted lover who constantly stalks the lover who has rejected them.

They know you hate them. They don’t care and are not looking for your support. They don’t expect it. Get over it and move on. Focus on Prince Andrew or other infractions of the Royal Family who actually live in Britain and who your taxes support.
