Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

  • THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUFFOLK

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

I was eager bemused by the speech from behind the desk on her 40th birthday. Family photographs arranged on her desk.

Remind you of anyone?

SueSaid · 17/08/2021 19:07

'hate this way of speaking. Especially about such serious matters. It sounds like a poor creative writing project. It sounds completely insincere and, in my opinion, detracts from any message they may be trying to convey.'

Yes. If they'd just said 'we are deeply concerned with recent developments and our thoughts are with all those affected', fine. It's the patronising story telling, everything has too long flowery dialogue. Just offer support and kind words, stop attention seeking.

Cheeeeislifenow · 17/08/2021 19:08

Of course they have to speak out. Wasn't harry in Afghanistan?

Yes exactly
PamDenick · 17/08/2021 19:10

Op, it’s the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Not Suffolk.

They’re a whole different kettle of fish those Suffolk folk. They’re kind to their families... and good at tractor driving... and are best mates with Ed Sheehan...

partystress · 17/08/2021 19:11

Suffolk? Have they relocated or is this written by someone with very limited knowledge of UK geography?

PamDenick · 17/08/2021 19:12

I just think the OP made a typo...

SueSaid · 17/08/2021 19:13

'Of course they have to speak out. Wasn't harry in Afghanistan?'

Yes and his previous comments are of course appropriate -

SwimmingUnderwater · 17/08/2021 19:16

@CorrBlimeyGG

Prince Harry served in Afghanistan. He also leads the Invictus Games and supports many veteran support projects. I guess that's why he felt the need to make a statement.
It’s not Harry’s statement though , is it? Note the use of the word ‘fall’ for one thing. I don’t care at all what the two of them think. It’s also not for them to tell anyone else what to do, how to act or anything else. They’ve made enough of a mess of their own situation. It’s a pity they haven’t the sense to behave responsibly themselves.
CauliflowerCheese30 · 17/08/2021 19:17

I got bored reading it and didn't bother to finish it.

MintyCedric · 17/08/2021 19:18

Utter cobblers.

How much are they actually suffering in their multi-million enclave surrounded by staff?

What are they actually doing?

When I see substantial donations being made by them to aid organisations, or Harry popping fown to Haiti and rolling his sleeves up, then I'll believe it's genuine rather than attention seeking rhetoric.

Crockof · 17/08/2021 19:20

@Candleabra

It's almost poetic. 'As we all watch, as we all witness, as we all feel..'.

I hate this way of speaking. Especially about such serious matters. It sounds like a poor creative writing project. It sounds completely insincere and, in my opinion, detracts from any message they may be trying to convey.

Agree. It is also being seen to be doing something rather than actually doing something.
AtlasNeverShrugged · 17/08/2021 19:22

I thought they didn't want to be famous anymore? Confused

FatAnkles · 17/08/2021 19:26

Incredible sense of self-importance.

banisher · 17/08/2021 19:27

Christ they sound like a pair of wankers.

Roussette · 17/08/2021 19:33

Posters saying what are they actually doing?

Given they live over there, are not working members of the RF, Harry is instrumental in Invictus, veterans who served in Afghanistan and did two tours of duties there, they have every right to make a statement.
Ignore it if you don't like it.

Why aren't posters more concerned about what our royal family are doing then? (They're a bit busy at the moment holed up at Balmoral)

Marcee · 17/08/2021 19:33

It doesnt make much sense to me.

"As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity"
???

I have to read each sentence several times before i think I understand what they might mean. But in the end just end up confused.

Multilateral gathering?????

"To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work."

Do we know what organisations they mean?

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 19:35

😂 uh yes. I believe so. Anyway. You get the point.

In my defence I have CFS and it’s school holidays…

Virtue signaling.

PicsInRed · 17/08/2021 19:36

Harry is an Afghanistan veteran who cofounded (?) Invictus, and Meghan did women's advancement work with the UN, so they're closer to the issue than many higher profile people who would have weighed in.

It would have been weird if they'd said nothing or even just been brisk.

It's obviously written for an American audience, so it's going to be framed for that audience and therefore come across "feelier" than it would if written for the UK.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/08/2021 19:37

@Cillmantain

I think they never miss an opportunity to promote themselves.
This
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/08/2021 19:38

@FatAnkles

Incredible sense of self-importance.
And this
EarringsandLipstick · 17/08/2021 19:38

@DesperateForSun

It’s meaningless drivel
💯 this.

I never usually have any opinion on H&M but felt a bit ill reading this self-important nonsense.

EarringsandLipstick · 17/08/2021 19:38

This too.
