Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

Didn’t Meghan’s voice over for the elephant documentary win an award?

Surely not, did it really?

I don't understand how they get from seeing the devastation in Haiti and the terrible scenes in Afghanistan to thinking, do you know what the world needs now? A sanctimonious statement from two multi-millionaires in a mansion in California pretending that we are all in this together. It's so pointless and meaningless, and the writing so terrible - just why? No wonder people come to the conclusion that they are using these awful humanitarian disasters for self promotion.

MintyCedric · 17/08/2021 21:49

@Why2why that's great...what have they done for Haiti?

CallMeNutribullet · 17/08/2021 21:51

Surely to Christ a man who has done two tours of Afghanistan and his wife can publicly comment on what's going on in Afghanistan.
Every other Tom, Dick and Harry is.

Lipsandlashes · 17/08/2021 21:53

Not left speechless enough that they took a day off from self promotion.

Disneycharacter · 17/08/2021 21:55

Do they actually think the world cares what they think?

They are not diplomats, state leaders or of any political importance. Their opinion is no more important than mr and mrs Bloggs of Clapham.

Plumtree391 · 17/08/2021 22:04

It's a very good statement, quite heartfelt.

Harry will feel the Afghanistan business particularly, having served there. He loved his army life so much.

I don't see why they or anyone would call out Biden. 70% of Americans wanted out of Afghanistan and who can blame am after the Vietnam fiasco. There's no point in fighting a war that will never be won and losing so many lives in the process.

I'm glad they mentioned Haiti, that is dreadful. I feel so much for those poor people who really do go through the mill. The Red Cross will have a fund specifically to help them.

FrippEnos · 17/08/2021 22:06

Cheeeeislifenow

From the archiewell annoucement

They "encouraged" people to join them in "supporting organisations doing critical work".

So not much really.

Marmaladeagain · 17/08/2021 22:11

It was a clumsy overly wordy yet empty statement. Definitely better to have remained "speechless".

Biden's statement last night was absolutely appaling, blaming the Afghan people as not willing to fight - they've lost thousands of people fighting the Taliban.

H&M always miss the mark whatever they say, this was just another example of the many examples of them having nothing to say.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 17/08/2021 22:16

Biden's statement last night was absolutely appaling, blaming the Afghan people as not willing to fight - they've lost thousands of people fighting the Taliban.

I agree. I was watching with my mouth wide open in shock.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 17/08/2021 22:17

I think they never miss an opportunity to promote themselves

@Cillmantain I agree 100%

Why2why · 17/08/2021 22:25

@Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel, good on them for promoting themselves. I see no problem in them working hard, promoting themselves to continue making a living and using their platform to support others.

Who do you think the other members will f the Royal Family promote? They promote themselves and are a look ways desperate to ensure their relevance and survival.

You hate Harry and Meghan for promoting themselves but love the rest of the Royal Family desperate attempts to ensure their survival throughout times?

Why2why · 17/08/2021 22:30

@MintyCedric do your research. You know about all the evil they are doing so use that same energy to find out what good they are doing. Though I am sure in your eyes everything they do and say are bad, cringed, wicked, etc. BUT I can tell you this, they have done a damn sight more than the rest of the Royal Family. What has the British Royal family done to highlight the needs of Haitians? Do you care about Haiti? Then ask those who feed off your tax payer pounds what are they doing and stop worry about Harry and Meghan.

I saw a funny picture that depicted the British hatred of Meghan. It was a collage of middle aged to old white men and women. That pretty much sums up how those outside of Britain view this issue.

Eaumyword · 17/08/2021 22:34

If they are personally donating from their wealth to humanitarian aid organisations for Haiti and Afghanistan, then that can only be a good thing.

The part of their statement that jars with me is that they sign off using their royal titles.

I don't feel that any royals should comment on volatile world political situations, even from a humanitarian standpoint. So why not sign off as Harry and Meghan (as in she who has been involved in the UN and he who served in Afghanistan) rather than the pompous reminder of brand 'Duke and Duchess of Sussex'.

Why2why · 17/08/2021 22:35

The British media is making us Brits look like small island backward and hate-filled people.

Nothing, absolutely nothing justify the level of hate aimed at this couple by the British media. Even when Meghan was pregnant they hounded her, even the so-called feminist.

artquejtion · 17/08/2021 22:35

Why on earth could they not put out an intelligent and succinct statement !

Even better if Harry could have put out a personal one, considering his experience in Afghanistan, it would have been more appropriate and likely seen as more genuine that that statement.

I have noticed that, for the most part, H&M only get reported in the tabloids, the likes of Buzzfeed and Dailymail and UK media.

It seems mainstream American media is not too interested in their opinions or statements.

Why2why · 17/08/2021 22:38

I am very pleased they are using their royal titles and see absolutely no reason why they should not.

When other royals use their own personal wealth to contribute to charities and disaster areas, then I will rage at Harry and Meghan.

A few years ago, hurricane Maria devastated the Caribbean. Prince Charles said warm words and I think he visited. I don’t remember him giving of his personal wealth to match his warm words of being heartbroken. Worse still he never encouraged any one to contribute to charities seeking to help these people.

We you outraged then? No? Then stop your irrational hatred.

artquejtion · 17/08/2021 22:39

@SugarCaneHarvest

Seem weird and cringeworthy. I think the issue is they don't have social media. If they had Twitter or Instagram they could put out their feelings on world events and it would seem more normal.

These issuing of statements, makes it come across as though they think the world is waiting for their view and guidance on the matter before acting. People only expect statements from leaders, political or religious etc. - the President, the PM, World Leaders, the Pope etc.

Bizarre as a ' private couple' to start issuing public statements on world events they have no direct involvement in.

Totally this.
Why2why · 17/08/2021 22:42

The world is clearly waiting for their statements. This thread and the British media proves it. Look how the statement has led to every British media and forums like mumsnet discussing it.

So clearly the British world feasts on any little morsel they provide. They must be loving it to see how they can send the British world into a frenzy just by their mere statements. What absolute power!

Bovrilly · 17/08/2021 22:45

good on them for promoting themselves

Really? You think they're using these humanitarian crises to promote themselves and you approve of that?

Why2why · 17/08/2021 22:58

@Bovrilly, I cannot disapprove when everyone else is doing it including the other much loved Royal Family.

To use their platform to help others, they must promote that platform. At least they are reaching out to the most desperate people and nations who are in need.

I’d much rather support what they are doing that supporting a privilege woman promoting herself by complaining how hard motherhood is.

ARudeTerriblePerson · 17/08/2021 22:59

The charity sector constantly creeps round slebs begging them to use their voices. PP make good points about the absolute disaster in Haiti.

FrippEnos · 17/08/2021 22:59

Why2why
The world is clearly waiting for their statements.

As far as I can see most of the "British world" is waiting for them to actually say what ""supporting organisations doing critical work" actually means.

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 17/08/2021 23:00

Pointless hand wringing.

I think Harry's Invictus statement has a better ring to it

Saidtoomuch · 17/08/2021 23:06

Its a long, American way of saying "its all a bit crap, isn't it". Rich people telling poor folk to dig deep.
