The royal family

To think Prince Harry should give up his titles?

Let’s face it, he has suffered immensely being born into the most famous and privileged family in the world. His titles were bestowed solely due to the family he was born into with the expectation that he would be a ‘working’ member of that family in return for the privilege and unfathomably (to us plebs) luxurious lifestyle he enjoyed (or not as he says now).

He has thankfully escaped his gilded cage and is no longer a working member of the family, in fact he has completely trashed that institution and in doing so also the Head of it, his Grandmother, the Queen while her husband of 73 years was ill in hospital and dying.

As he has suffered so much due to the public interest of his life (interest purely due to his title) by the public and the media so much, shouldn’t he just jack it all in and decree that he is no longer ‘Royal’ by giving up his titles and living quietly in the US with his family?

They have nothing to offer without his titles...

StayCalmX · 22/06/2021 21:47

@CatherineMorland

I don’t understand why he doesn’t want to give them up, if being royal is as bad as they now make out.
Yes, accusations of hypocrasy could not be made if he gave them up, and then he',d be free to make money from advertising (?)
StCharlotte · 22/06/2021 21:47

Had something else happened today then?

FangsForTheMemory · 22/06/2021 21:48

Time on your hands, OP? why not volunteer for a local charity or do something, ANYTHING more useful than whingeing about Harry and/or Meghan.

HTH.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/06/2021 21:48

I think he should.

He says he felt unhappy and trapped and it only makes sense for him to free himself of the burden of the royal titles.

RoseAndRose · 22/06/2021 21:49

I think it would be the logical and consistent thing for them to do

I don't expect it to happen though

persnickle · 22/06/2021 21:49

Wish people considered Andrew even a smidgeon as much as they persecute H&M

But he didn't say mean things... I think that's the benchmark, apparently it's worse than real crimes!

Lilibet2022 · 22/06/2021 21:50

He should be interrogated by the FBI but he is clearly going to keep his head down so no headlines are generated

But isn't that the point? The press should be generating and regurgitating headlines until Andrew speaks to the FBI. Meanwhile the press are too busy harassing a woman who gave birth weeks ago because she had the audacity to stand up for herself and she when they overstepped the mark.

persnickle · 22/06/2021 21:52

Yes. It is so fucking weird. I had absolutely no idea people felt this kind of ownership until it played out before my very eyes.

It's crazy!

Of course they shouldn’t, he’s born a prince, whether he’s a good prince or a crap prince. That’s the whole point, they are born into it, gifted by god…. unless it’s all a load of elitist rubbish and we should get rid of them all. .. now that’s a though.

Pretty much

TellerTuesday · 22/06/2021 21:54

No he absolutely shouldn't. He is the grandchild of the monarch and the prince title is his regardless of whether he is a working royal or not.

This is what I don't get. Even if H&M are spoilt, greedy etc so what? Why are they getting shamed for that daily whilst the press are quiet about Andrew.

Chloemol · 22/06/2021 21:56

Yes, a s I say that as a firm royalist. He has his family down big time. He wants privacy, and the ability to earn his own money, fine, just hand back the titles

TellerTuesday · 22/06/2021 21:56

I also don't think he should have lost his military titles either personally.

Blossomtoes · 22/06/2021 21:58

I wish you hadn’t started this thread. I was only thinking this morning how quiet they’ve been for a couple of weeks and how nice it’s been.

granny24 · 22/06/2021 22:01

He can’t give up his titles, he is styled as the letters patent pronounced by his great grandfather.

PlacidPenelope · 22/06/2021 22:01

On balance I think he should give up all titles and claims to the succession and apply for American citizenship, he's clearly not happy being a part of the Royal Family and does not want to work on their behalf. He seems to want and enjoy the lifestyle he has now so why does he need the titles and his place in the succession? They have money and the chance to earn well where they are too. I think if he (and her) made that break relations with their family would improve, possibly.

I'd love to have been able to read Mumsnet during the reign of George IV - the outrage would have been absolutely stupendous.
And in Jane Austen language.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 22/06/2021 22:03

Um no, he is a blood Prince it's not something anyone can take away.

I think it's awful that Charles wants to ban archie from a title.

I am 100% behind a totally scaled down monarchy, I'm all for totally reducing everything about them except for the immediate line and I think at this moment for Charles to ban Harry's son from a title is incredibly insensitive and inappropriate with the history in that family group, ie vanilla, Diana, Charles and the sons.

Lilibet2022 · 22/06/2021 22:03

Because you don't piss off the press and not pay for it. Most people who certain areas of the press do hatchet jobs on are regular run of the mill type people who will often consider the costs such as legal fees far outweigh the need to be vindicated.
Meghan and Harry come with their own ready made legal team making it a 'fair fight' and they hate them for it. I used to work in a certain department where press releases were knocked back daily if the papers weren't interested. The press don't have to talk about them they chose to.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 22/06/2021 22:05

"the royal family" amounts to more than this current group of people.

I know ... I’m an idiot 🤷‍♀️
Lilibet2022 · 22/06/2021 22:06

@persnickle it keeps the heat off Andrew.

Yep

ICanSmellSummerComing · 22/06/2021 22:07

Pets muckle, because they are softer easier targets.

Prince Andrew, awful, awful man.
