The royal family

To think Prince Harry should give up his titles?

Let’s face it, he has suffered immensely being born into the most famous and privileged family in the world. His titles were bestowed solely due to the family he was born into with the expectation that he would be a ‘working’ member of that family in return for the privilege and unfathomably (to us plebs) luxurious lifestyle he enjoyed (or not as he says now).

He has thankfully escaped his gilded cage and is no longer a working member of the family, in fact he has completely trashed that institution and in doing so also the Head of it, his Grandmother, the Queen while her husband of 73 years was ill in hospital and dying.

As he has suffered so much due to the public interest of his life (interest purely due to his title) by the public and the media so much, shouldn’t he just jack it all in and decree that he is no longer ‘Royal’ by giving up his titles and living quietly in the US with his family?

@StoneofDestiny

Picked up random papers and magazines to flick through on a long journey recently and the big 'push' in the press is Sophie (and Edward). Endless articles about her closeness to Philip, her dress sense etc She is clearly being puffed up to the media as the next Diana/Catherine clothes horse, agony aunt type figure.

Palace machine is obviously being busy on this (and her trying to sell access to the monarchy is forgiven)

Well maybe it is true they are close? True they support the Queen and the monarchy? Maybe it is true they don't whinge and get on with it? Compare that with the Montecito residents.

It’s pretty obvious why the focus is on Sophie and Edward. The number available for Royal duties has decreased rapidly with Megxit and Andrew’s disgrace. Edward and Sophie have been quietly getting on with it for years, now they’re going to be doing even more and their profile’s being raised accordingly.

I find saying Americans will just call her Princess Meghan is a disparaging comment. It’s unfair and rude to assume they lack basic knowledge. If I were American (I’m Canadian), I’d be somewhat offended.

Why would you. Most countries called Diana, Princess Di right till the end. I don't believe they lacked basic knowledge or were inferior in any way. It was just an endearing term for them.

Mummy

Different situation. Diana became the Princess of Wales when she married and was known as such for many years. ‘Princess’ was still in her title post-divorce so the subtle styling change wasn’t a big deal. Meghan became the Duchess of Sussex (not princess) and is known as a duchess.
To be honest I’m not invested in this - just stating my opinion that old habits die hard. My grandmother never stopped calling Diana ‘Lady Diana’, for no other reason than this was how the world was introduced to her. Smile

But it's very clear the monarchy are feeding the press all the stories and steering the direction. .

And it’s very clear why. And the issue is?

It’s interesting that on Lilibet’s birth certificate that Harry put his name down as HRH Duke of Sussex but Meghan put Rachel Meghan Markle.

On another note, I thought they weren’t allowed to use their HRH? Or is that for commercial reasons?

Port1aCastis · 25/06/2021 13:12

Where did anyone see the new babies birth certificate?

Kinsters · 25/06/2021 13:14

He actually put that his name was The Duke of Sussex His Royal Highness, the HRH is supposedly his last name 😂

I think it's pretty impossible to distinguish between commercial and private/personal for Harry so I think it shouldn't be used for anything. Like the Princess Diana exhibition, that's not really a commercial thing for Harry but they're changing the labels to remove his HRH.

TheKeatingFive · 25/06/2021 13:17

I don’t think anyone did see the birth certificate

smilesy · 25/06/2021 13:21

There is a whole other thread talking about the birth certificate. It’s been published in TMZ and picked up by the DM. It’s a public document.

Ah so is all this assumption?

Yes, give up the titles.

Viviennemary · 02/07/2021 23:21

I think both of them should stop or be stopped from using their titles. Same as Lady Louise could technically be Princess Louise now but she isn't. She hasn't been stripped of the title it just isn't in use.

Roussette · 03/07/2021 08:51

Like Duchess of York has been stopped you mean? Oh hang on... she hasn't... and decades have gone by....

Viviennemary · 03/07/2021 12:10

You certainly have a point about the Duchess of York and her title. Would Budgie the helicopter have seen the light of day without the royal connection and title. Very possibly not. But I think we can all agree Sarah Ferguson has been frozen out. Whether the same thing will happen to Harry remains to be seen. I think he will eventually find himself on the perimeter of all things royal which won't be any good for his new enterprises or for his self esteem. Can't see him staying in the USA permanently. Still anything can happen.

TheKeatingFive · 03/07/2021 12:16

But I think we can all agree Sarah Ferguson has been frozen out.

I don’t think that’s true at all. Isn’t she living with Andrew?

Viviennemary · 03/07/2021 12:21

Frozen out as regards the rest of the royals. She wasn't at William and Kate's wedding. I just read that although she was invited to Harrys wedding she was excluded from the evening reception. Which upset her very much apparently. And years of spending Christmas apart from her children. That was quite cruel I thought.

TheKeatingFive · 03/07/2021 12:23

Frozen out as regards the rest of the royals.

She’s not though, she’s cosied up with Andrew, both of them keeping out of the public eye.

With regards to weddings, she was more in favour in 2018 than she was in 2010.

Roussette · 03/07/2021 12:24

Yes, she lives with him at Royal Lodge, Windsor, and both daughters' wedding receptions were hosted there.
So she might not stand on the Royal balcony, but frozen out... no, not really.

GlencoraP · 03/07/2021 12:54

I think she was frozen out for many years though. It’s only really in the last few years that she has been a bit more accepted. It should also be remembered that the first time Meghan met the Queen it was at a private lunch hosted by Andrew and Sarah, and Sarah is one of the few members of the family who have publicly come out to support Meghan and it was Sarah who apparently taught her how to curtesy.

StillCalmX · 03/07/2021 14:09

Oh she was frozen out. I think she was forgiven at some point. The queen is v fond of b&e so i think mature adult granddaughters would not have felt close to family members being cold/cruel to their mother
