Boris could have combed his hair for this, surely?

Sorry to derail a bit, but can you imagine if he was a woman?

SunshineCake · 09/04/2021 21:55

It has been said that what he said weren't gaffes but his way of trying to break the ice and put people at ease. No doubt some people already having posted awful comments will post another about my post.

Very true!

I'd also read that, the article I was reading was actually really intersting.
CauliflowerCheese30 · 09/04/2021 22:00

Interesting ffs

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 09/04/2021 22:40

Such sad news, I feel so sorry for the Queen and her family. I didn't realise what an interesting life he'd led or actually how much good stuff he did. Shows just how shallow the media is.

And blimey he was good looking when young Blush

CauliflowerCheese30 · 09/04/2021 23:01

I had no idea also about his early life, or what he'd done during the war years, nor about his Mum.

Frownette · 09/04/2021 23:09

And blimey he was good looking when young

I thought that too

mermaidsariel · 10/04/2021 00:18

He was wasn't he? No wonder the Queen took one look and fell head over heels. None of his children seem to have inherited his looks sadly.

jessstan2 · 10/04/2021 01:16

@CauliflowerCheese30

Interesting ffs
He was an interesting character (we can do without the ffs,) with strong 'backbone', and his early life certainly shaped his outlook. I like the way that yesterday's TV programmes show him as he really was without airbrushing.
SunshineCake · 10/04/2021 07:14

@jessstan2

The ffs was for the typo..

CauliflowerCheese30 · 10/04/2021 09:14

Yes it was, thank you Sunshine.

CokeDrinker · 10/04/2021 11:04

@Fluffycloudland77

I feel so sorry for the queen, she’s had an awful time of it & been humiliated by her family and now her dh is dead.

I hope Harry stays away tbh. He’s caused enough trouble.

@Fluffycloudland77 Oh give over, that family has caused Harry, his wife, and their child more than enough trouble and grief, Harry hasn't done anything wrong. The disgraceful attacks on Harry and Meghan need to stop.
CokeDrinker · 10/04/2021 11:17

He certainly packed a lot into his 99 year life, he lived it well and it is sad that he couldn't make it to 100. RIP.

mermaidsariel · 10/04/2021 11:20

It’s clear he could have had a glittering career and he gave it up to walk behind his wife and suooorr her. We should be grateful because the Queen wouldn’t have had the reign she has had otherwise.

sitandwait · 10/04/2021 13:11

@CokeDrinker you're not the thread police. If people have those opinions they can express them within the site rules. What you say is likewise just your opinion, not fact. I imagine Philip would have been in favour of free exchanges of opinion.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 10/04/2021 22:07

Philip wasn't my cup of tea but his work with the young was inspired. I have only seen one program about him and that was very enlightening. His mother because a nunShock

Anyway losing a life partner after 73 years is unimaginable. The queen is only human after all. Glad her children have gathered around and seem to be offering good support. Also dealing with the media etc. I think in normally the general public wouldn't necessarily act quite as much as this. The last few months have not been great for the queen and I think the more silent majority are now showing their support for the queen. Which is lovely. A nation united even in grief is better than one divided.

PresentingPercy · 11/04/2021 08:57

Do you know something: the Queen will have been expecting this. Yes, it’s very sad for her but they barely lived together. It’s not unimaginable. It’s what happens when people are in their late 90s. We can all prepare for the inevitable and my guess is the Queen has. She will have amazing memories and she received superb support from him. He didn’t get the career he wanted. So he gave up a lot.

We know Meghan isn’t coming but possibly Harry is already here.

I think it’s a shame he spent so long in hospital recently. No family visiting - except Charles to talk about his funeral apparently. That felt a bit cruel. And for what end result? He died anyway. I felt sorry for him in the end.

diddl · 11/04/2021 09:13

I think that they spent a lot of time together recently though-I mean before he went into hospital.

Weren't they bubbled together at Windsor?

And last Christmas was just the two of them?

Probably the first Christmas that they have ever had without others there (staff excluded).

Even when expected though it can be a shock & I think it's often impossible not to hope even though you know that there is none.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 11/04/2021 13:43

It was nice the got her a couple of new corgis whilst he was in hospital. I don't normally like people getting pets for these type of purposes but we know she is a good dog owner and staff to help. I think it is a lovely distraction and focus for her.

Yes they did live separately for a bit. He was in a much smaller building and I can see in your 90s that would be needed really. Though he did very well for his age. The heart operation at that age was a little iffy. However his choice I suppose . Some people don't want to go without a fight. Doctors these days are not supposed to deny people treatment because of age and all that.

It has been a horrible year for families to lose loved ones. Missing last Christmases and not having hospital visits etc. Phillip was apparently able to zoom call. Which is impressive at his age. I do expect staff may have helped him a bit though.

MaggieFS · 11/04/2021 14:10

I've been wondering how the socially distanced funeral will go. Surely the Queen won't sit alone? Perhaps she's going to form a bubble with ? Edward & family?

StormzyinaTCup · 11/04/2021 14:55

I would hope she won’t be sitting on her own, that would be so sad. I’m thinking she is probably in a bubble with, like you say, Edward and Sophie or maybe Charles.

Is the service being televised? Surely not.

PresentingPercy · 11/04/2021 15:20

Charles is at Highgrove. He’s not at Windsor even now. They don’t behave like other families.

O think if Theresa May regularly came out to speak to the Country looking a state people would comment on it too. Is presenting oneself neatly so tabboo?
