To wonder why Harry doesn't drop his titles now he's free of The Firm

He and Meghan wanted the freedom to earn their own money and good luck to them there. He's confirmed two new roles and his new employers are introducing him as "Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex".

For his self respect, why doesn't he ask to be called Harry Wales or Harry Mountbatten Windsor. Then he'd know he's being hired for his skills rather than being used for his royal connections.

Like everything else in his life he's only got it because of his titles and the money that comes with them ...I've said this before but I love saying it again..if only Mrs Merton was around to ask .."so Meghan Markle , what WAS it that attracted you to multi millionaire PRINCE Harry ?" 😬

For the same reason Edward VIII didn’t become Eddie Windsor. They both wanted the kudos of being royalty without the constraints - and neither of the were anything to write home about without their titles.

If he hadn't got a title those companies would have no reason to employ him.

tttigress · 24/03/2021 14:31

@Susie477

The answer to this question is glaringly obvious.

Because he wants to trade on his royal titles to make millions and maintain his social status while not doing any of the boring work or tedious duties entailed in being royal.

This, he needs to Prince title to keep earning,but doesn't want to do any of the unpleasant stuff.

If he is planning on withdrawing from royal life he needs to drop the Prince title!

@MrsTulipTattsyrup

Did you say the same about Diana, Princess of Wales, after she was divorced and left the royal family? Do you feel that Edward VII should have rescinded his title of Duke of Windsor after his abdication?
Does it matter? They’re both dead, and neither of them are the subject of the thread.

No, and Yes.

No, because Diana’s position was different. She was an uneducated teenage virgin when she married into the royal family, who cynically used her as a broodmare before Charles discarded her and went back to the woman he really loved. Retaining her royal status was the least she was owed.

Yes, because Edward dropped his family in the lurch when he abdicated.

Blacktothepink · 24/03/2021 14:35

The RF should take away his titles

1forAll74 · 24/03/2021 14:36

H e should be called Mr HAZ now, it sounds more American.

Wildern · 24/03/2021 14:36

Well, didn't Edward VIII only get given the Duke of Windsor title because he abdicated? George Whichever said he wanted it to be the first thing he did as king, but making his wastrel brother a duke also had the advantage that he couldn't stand for election to the House of Commons, or speak on political subjects in the Lords -- and the declaration that gave him the right to use 'His Royal Highness' was also very firm that Wallis wasn't entitled to be styled Royal Highness, nor any children they might have, and not be on the civil list.

I think it was more 'What do you do with a dangerously-idle Nazi-sympathising former king?'

@WiseOwlOne

When I read about this job, i was open mouthed, is he not nervous? Does he not worry he isn't equipped? I worry about going up ine grade in my civil service job!!
That was my first thought too. I'd be panicking that I wasn't equal to the job and would barely sleep at night for fear of being found out that I wasn't.
MiddleParking · 24/03/2021 14:40

People who grow up in palaces and go to Eton because of ‘divine birthright’ probably don’t suffer the same impostor syndrome as your average mumsnet user.

HeadNorth · 24/03/2021 14:41

@LemonTT

Well all the titles are meaningless anyway. Conferred by the queen to her family. Anyone setting stock by them is a fool.

Just because your mother or grandmother makes you a duke doesn’t mean you have integrity.

Whether they live in LA or London its all just trappings.

He may as well use them as any of the others.

Yes, I think that sums it for me. All titles are ridiculous, so why some posters get so riled by Harry's in particular does shine a light on their inbred servility and deference to the aristocracy. The RF and assorted hangers and nobodies having titles is unremarkable (Why? Do you literally think their blood is blue?). But Harry who married an American actress - sacrilege and outrage!

Honestly, catch yourselves on.

Freshprincess · 24/03/2021 14:41

Most Americans won’t know who Harry Wales is, so he loses his USP.

Conversely the duchess is much better know by her actual name. Perhaps he should be Harry Markle?

Figgygal · 24/03/2021 14:42

It’s his USP and makes him money

DareIask · 24/03/2021 14:42

I'm surprised he's not Mr Markle.

MintyMabel · 24/03/2021 14:45

Laughing that people actually think it matters what he calls himself. People still know who he is.

We still know that Zara Tindall is part of the royal family. You think Peter Phillips doesn't trade on his Royal Links?

People have titles and they are allowed to use them. And they do. But of course, if Harry does it, that's a problem.

MintyMabel · 24/03/2021 14:46

Most Americans won’t know who Harry Wales

Because they don't also have eyes? As soon as they see him, most will know who he is, unless they live under a rock.

Susie477 · 24/03/2021 14:47

@DareIask

In reality, that’s exactly what Harry is. He brings the titles & status, Meghan the brains & ambition.
Chloemol · 24/03/2021 14:48

Because without theirs titles neither are worth anything

OhToBeASeahorse · 24/03/2021 14:48

Because he is thick as shit and has absolutely nothing else to trade with.

But then I suspect you knew the answer...

GabsAlot · 24/03/2021 14:55

I get the feeling he wants to hang onto it all somehow
i mean he said himself he never would have left had it been for meghan-he'll be back in the fold one day

Never really understood the Diana cult. It was obvious from the outset it was a set up marriage. She was hardly the innocent, she loved the princess/future queen bit but didn't like the rest. She made it plain in her pictures her disinterest in Charles from the start, she had few if any common interests with him. As for the three people in her marriage I think she was forgetting her many lovers which started fairly early in the marriage.
AdaColeman · 24/03/2021 14:58

For the rest of his life, Harry's skill set will consist of his royal connections, his titles and links to others with power & money, his own sense of entitlement.
Quite a formidable CV, as events are proving.

That’s what an Eton education buys you, that you and I don’t have. Confidence way in excess of your ability.
Kinneddar · 24/03/2021 15:04

Hes always going to be a Prince but I wish the Queen would remove the Sussex titles. Thats what they trade on & despite her dislike for the Royals MM seems to love being a Duchess. Theyve no right to the Sussex titles, why should she have a title when she no longer wishes to have anything to do with the RF
