To wonder why Harry doesn't drop his titles now he's free of The Firm

He and Meghan wanted the freedom to earn their own money and good luck to them there. He's confirmed two new roles and his new employers are introducing him as "Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex".

For his self respect, why doesn't he ask to be called Harry Wales or Harry Mountbatten Windsor. Then he'd know he's being hired for his skills rather than being used for his royal connections.

Jan Moir is vile - this is the 'journalist' who linked Stepehn Gately's early tragic death to his sexuality. I frown upon anyone who laps up her hateful spew.

JustLyra · 26/03/2021 13:32

The situation in Sweden is very different to here.

Firstly, he didn't completely remove titles from the grandchildren concerned. They are still Prince/Princess.

He removed their HRH's and removed them from the royal house (not royal family as some media reported). Members of the Swedish royal house are expected to be working royals and receive an appenage from the taxpayers to reflect that.

Children in the royal house are expected to be educated in the Swedish system so there has been questions about what would happen going forward given Princess Madeleine doesn't live in Sweden any longer so her children won't be in school there.

All that happened was the King clarified that Carl-Philip and Madeleine's children won't be working royals and therefore won't be entitled to taxpayer funds. Basically the same as Beatrice and Eugenie's position here already.

JustLyra · 26/03/2021 13:33

@GCAcademic

So, in other words, it's not a scandal. If the BRF were to decide to follow Carl Gustav of Sweden's example, and remove titles from the likes of Beatrice, Eugenie, etc, there would be overwhelming support from the British public.

Frown all you like @ HeadNorth . Can’t say I am bothered ..

sashh · 26/03/2021 13:46

@sashh
Diana on marriage was HRH Princess of Wales (Camilla holds it now). When Diana divorced they dropped the HRH and restyled it as Diana Princess of Wales.

Isn't that what I said?

Lockdownbear · 26/03/2021 13:51

I just clarifying that the "Diana PoW" was after divorce, prior to divorce it was "HRH PoW" no first name.

It’ll be very interesting to see what sort of job M gets when her maternity leave is over. She already has a nanny I assume so she shouldn’t need long.

Yeah, what's a bit of homophobia if the person concerned is being nasty about Harry. Really, you like this version of yourself?
CateTown · 26/03/2021 14:28

I don't think the Queen should strip them of their titles, Harry and Meghan should stop using them. Especially for monetary gain. Let them make their way in the brave new world as the Markle Windsors of California.

Funny how some on here accusing spews of hate have plenty to say about our ‘Dear Queen’ but take offence at others having any similarly negative opinion on Harry and Meghan.

I see your frown and raise you an eyebrow.

Mirrors are useful things to see versions of yourself.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 26/03/2021 15:03

'I don't think the Queen should strip them of their titles, Harry and Meghan should stop using them'

Yes how refreshing would it have been if he'd called himself Harry Windsor and ignored the link to an institution he seems to loathe. He'll always be a prince by birthright but for the love of god won't he stop trading on it commercially 🙄.

He need to keep it, from the moment he was born, they raised him to be royal. Trained him everything that expected to be a royal family and always put him in the public eyes.

Mummy195 · 27/03/2021 08:15

What a strange request.

Did The Dukes of Westminster, Richmond, Marlborough, Beaufort, Sommerset etc. stop using theirs?
Nevermind the plethora of Earls and other titles who don't work for the crown and are all mega rich.

I hope he passes it on to Archie and grandkids and it stays in the family like everyone else has done.

IrmaFayLear · 27/03/2021 12:34

great piece from unherd, @GoLightlyontheEarth .

Is there anyone on this planet who truly believes Harry wrote that stuff himself?!

Roussette · 27/03/2021 12:55

Give the guy a break for god's sake!

Shock horror, maybe he did write it himself!

Kokeshi123 · 27/03/2021 13:00

Do you understand the difference between a hereditary peer and a royal duke?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 27/03/2021 13:29

'Did The Dukes of Westminster, Richmond, Marlborough, Beaufort, Sommerset etc. stop using theirs? Nevermind the plethora of Earls and other titles who don't work for the crown and are all mega rich.'

Yes but they hadn't gone on a trashy US chat show slating 'the institution' and making derogatory allegations. You'd think H would want to distance himself from Royal titles really.

Mummy195 · 27/03/2021 14:14

Hereditary peerage was once upon a time Royal. Those ancestors once worked for the crown and court. By the time the dukedom goes to Archie's great, great grandchildren it will be hereditary.

No, Oprah is not 'trashy'. Don't even try that. She worked bloody hard against all odds to get where she is.

Roussette · 27/03/2021 14:34

Totally agree. I have a lot of time for Oprah.

Sansaplans · 27/03/2021 14:40

To be fair they didn't say Oprah herself was trashy, but that the show was- there is a difference.

ImpatiensI · 27/03/2021 14:46

@Sansaplans

Of course there is and people are just trying it on again, trying to twist words and shame opposing opinion.

I generally have huge respect for Oprah but she's made a fool of herself with this interview.

Roussette · 27/03/2021 14:50

To call a show that is run by one person 'trashy' does insinuate that really but hey ho, what does it matter. She's a businesswoman, entrepreneur and has come a long way from her roots.

How sad that a charity felt it couldn't speak out until the OW chat about a donation Meghan made. That's how toxic it all is.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-56536993

'A charity has said the Duchess of Sussex's interview with Oprah Winfrey prompted it to speak out about a £10,000 donation she made.

Meghan gifted the money to Himmah, which works to tackle racism and poverty in Nottingham, in August but the charity kept it a secret.'

No doubt this donation by her will be trashed because she can do no good in some people's eyes.
However, it was a lovely gesture and meant so much to the charity, and that's all that matters.
