Where have you seen that the Queen likes The Crown? I thought there was too much 'dramatic licence', and that the RF hadn't commented on it.

Iknowthingsthatwillhappen · 04/10/2020 23:26

Awww, can't read article Sad

AnneOfQueenSables · 04/10/2020 23:37

I assume the Telegraph article is about the first season of The Crown. It was widely reported that HMQ liked the first season but was unhappy with episodes in seasons 2 and 3, and the Palace put out a statement saying The Crown was fiction and they did not endorse it and had not contributed to it.

What's wrong with covering your legal expenses with the money you are awarded from a lawsuit????

That's what some of the money awarded is FOR, for goodness sake.

Nothing whatever - as you say, it is after all partly what a payout's for

However it was claimed that the money went to charity with no caveats mentioned, and - as with any RF member - some of us like to know what's real and what's merely smoke and mirrors

AnneOfQueenSables · 05/10/2020 12:35

There isn't anything wrong with it @BalloonSlayer I think posters were just trying to clarify the facts.
Sometimes when celebs win court cases the other side pays their costs and the celeb then donates all the damages to charity. Hugh Grant did that with one of his cases. Sometimes, celebs deduct costs then donate what is left.

Nothing if it’s transparent but saying damages will go to charity gives an impression of exactly that (the damages will go to charity), not that any leftover surplus amount will go. It could easily make people believe that a charity has received an amount that they haven’t.

No, damages are separate to the other side paying legal fees.

AnneOfQueenSables · 05/10/2020 14:33

@SunbathingDragon you misunderstood my point. Often when celebs donate all the damages, the other side has agreed to pay their legal fees - at least in the cases I'm aware of eg the other side paid Hugh Grant's legal fees. Hugh asked for all damages to be paid in full to a cancer charity.
I couldn't find any cases where all the damages were donated but the claimant paid their legal fees out of their own pocket. That doesn't mean they don't exist - just that I don't know of any.

MidnightFlit · 05/10/2020 14:49

Yes, I always thought costs and damages were separate: the judge could direct one party to pay the other's costs because a legal decision has been made, but then award a token amount in damages, if the case was a bit 'six of one, half a dozen of the other'.

That would be my guess at the outcome of this, going by the tone of the judge's comments so far.

On Twitter, the Queen's supportive comments about newspapers are being interpreted as giving her opinion on H and M. I think that's reading a bit too much into.

Quietlyloud · 05/10/2020 16:54

Just think to yourself - why do you support Kate and not Megan?

Exactly. And to add to that: why does the press lionise Kate and demonise Meghan, often for exactly the same thing?

Are you okay? Why are you so desperate to make out this is a race thing? Granted for some it might be, but I don’t see that on this thread at all. Also convenient how you ignored the fact a woman of colour has disagreed with you..

Trut · 05/10/2020 17:10

“Also convenient how you ignored the fact a woman of colour has disagreed with you..”

Do you feel that “women of colour” should have a homogenous view?

(And are you referring to a particular colour or do you mean all colours, white, brown, black, green, purple?)

Quietlyloud · 05/10/2020 17:24

Trut Obviously fucking not. No demographic is a hive mind.. way to miss what I was saying though. The poster trying to say we are all racist said the term she used is the only correct one because as a person of colour they believed that’s what should be sued. I was simply pointing out that other women of colour don’t agree. Am I using the wrong term or something? Why would I be taking about green people?

Quietlyloud · 05/10/2020 17:25

Used not sued.

froggygoneacourting · 05/10/2020 18:25

I must have missed something big (I only visit MN once a day or less, and tend to only read the most recent page of this thread) - can you please say who that poster is, and what they said?

No, why should we when you say poster should do their own Googling and finding things out?

Indeed, it's in reference to Covid coverage and released because of the 'Journalism Matters campaign' this week.

The Queen has praised the role of local newspapers and other news outlets during the coronavirus pandemic, describing trusted sources of information as “vital”.

She paid tribute to the “invaluable” efforts of local, regional and national newspapers supporting communities during the pandemic.

Crispsginchoc · 05/10/2020 18:40

@froggygoneacourting
Read back yourself if you believe you’ve missed something. If you only read the most recent page, you seriously can’t expect others to read previous pages again for your benefit because you can’t be bothered. Other posters are not your personal assistants.
If nothing has been deleted, all posts will be there. Make yourself a cup of tea and catch up with all the pages.

Janegrey333 · 05/10/2020 18:42

Do your own spadework, Froggy. Or don’t.

froggygoneacourting · 05/10/2020 18:43

No, why should we when you say poster should do their own Googling and finding things out?

Because deleted posts on Mumsnet aren't on Google.

And because if you make a serious allegation against a poster, you have to back it up.

I'm also curious to know who this other poster is! She sounds like someone I'd like to talk to!

I wonder if she saw my post - my post explicitly saying: "I personally prefer BAME and don't find it offensive, I used BIPOC by accident without thinking because I was a long-term American resident and because BIPOC is the preferred term within my industry, following a large-scale survey showing that the majority of POC workers in my industry find BAME offensive, and even though I personally don't find BAME offensive here's a link to the survey results discussing why some POC do find it offensive" and what this anonymous "person of colour" thought of me defending the usage all those different terms?

Obviously we have very different opinions, but it would be interesting to discuss those differences of opinion.

SunbathingDragon · 05/10/2020 18:46

All deleted posts are still on the web cache.

Foggy, I find you hilarious so I’m going to leave conversations with you now because I’m a little concerned that you aren’t meaning to be funny.

Malahaha · 05/10/2020 18:47

No, why should we when you say poster should do their own Googling and finding things out?

They don't even have to Google -- it's just a few pages back. But to save them the trouble, it was me.

And if you really want to know how very many poc view Meghan, you should try Lipstick Alley, an all-black US forum. I haven't seen so much anti-Meghan posts anywhere, not even in the DM! They are very much not her fans.
