@AnneOfQueenSables

The aim of certain contributions to this thread seems to be to personally abuse and smear posters either in the hope of derailing every avenue of discussion or in the hope of getting the thread deleted.

It reminds me of the tactics of TRAs and Momentum and over-zealous liberals who try to drive conversations and discussions from a public place because they disagree with them.
It is the antithesis of free speech. It is completely insincere because it relies upon the artifice of pretending to participate in debate whilst actually trying to close debate down.
I do wonder how our education system has produced a generation so unaware of the value of open debate, so unable to discuss without abuse and so oblivious to the different social, political and historic contexts in different countries. I hope it's a blip. If not then this is a very precarious time in history.

Yes completely agree. The constant insults and accusations of racism are designed to shut people up and end debate. It can be very effective, I hope now that the tide is turning and this sort of behaviour is seen for what it is.

@froggygoneacourting

Wow. A biracial poster uses a term to describe themselves that you don't like/don't think she should be allowed to use, and it sparks two pages of abuse, lies, and hypocrisy? That says everything about the agenda some posters have.

I do not want some self-appointed holier than thou vigilante telling me I can’t use a word because they decided yesterday that it was offensive.

Except you're the one doing that, not me. You're the one throwing a massive tantrum because I used a word you don't like. You're the one throwing nasty-names around. You're the one engaging in bullying to try to force black and biracial posters to not use certain words purely on the grounds you personally dislike that word, and for some bizarre reason you believe it's your right to police the language black and biracial posters are allowed to use.

Please copy and paste the exact post where I or anyone else has told you that you're not allowed to use certain words? Oh right, you can't. Because it's a lie. All I did was use the term of my preference. Why is that not allowed? Why are you allowed to dictate what words black people are allowed to call themselves, but a black person simply using the self-descriptor of their choice is being [inset string of insults here]?

For whoever asked: I work in theatre and TV/film. The term BAME has been explicitly banned within parts of the UK entertainment industry, following a large-scale survey showing that the majority of non-white theatre workers find it offensive. Search for the results of the "BAME Over" survey, there's tons of info out there about why this term is banned and widely considered offensive.

www.belgrade.co.uk/stories/a-statement-on-eradicating-the-use-of-the-term-bame/

I personally don't consider BAME to be offensive, and BAME is my preferred term. I am simply in the habit of using the preferred terminology I am asked to use at work, and because it is common to automatically) use the term you hear most frequently.

It's just insane and yet more evidence of the non-stop abuse and determination to drive black and biracial posters off this site, that that I'm being torn to shreds and bullied and having obviously false accusations thrown at me, simply because I automatically without thinking used the term that I hear around me every day. Why do you care what term I use to describe myself? It has literally nothing to do with you.

Then why don't you stop?

I’ll let the National Theatre know they are in the wrong to use BAME... www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/about-the-national-theatre/diversity/on-our-stages

@SunbathingDragon

OVienna if Meghan loses, I hope this will be the beginning of the end of super injunctions by the rich and famous.
They're already on the run because of Twitter etc. The current brand of 'reputational lawyers' have built up practices trying to assist clients who can no longer rely on them. But you're right - let's hope we see the back of them for good.

Well said @froggygoneacourting

And yes, I do wish there was a mute button on MN.

That Critic article, I just wonder if the reporter is lazy or just plain thick, when he does not seem to be aware of PC case similar to this one against the AN.

I asked and never received an answer from the regular posters about whether they want AN to win. I was asked a question here and answered it, I expected the same curtesy.

I answered.
smilesy · 04/10/2020 14:22

@froggygoneacourting. It is absolutely your right to refer to yourself as you wish. I disagree that posters are trying to bully anyone for using terms that they use in their everyday / work life. I think what people took issue with was the term “ indigenous” when applied to the UK as it is nonsensical in this context Smile

Yes I do hope AN win, for the reasons I have stated.
OVienna · 04/10/2020 14:26

@Mummy195
I can see I wasn't as explicit as I could have been. But yes, I hope she loses this case and the other involving Splash media and the pap shots in Canada from January.

OVienna · 04/10/2020 14:27

PC's case, if it pertains to the letters to government ministers that I think you mean which the palace wanted to keep out of the public domain, was brought under a different legal premise. But yes I think he deserved to lose that too. If it's the one I think it is.

Trut · 04/10/2020 14:38

PC’s letters to ministers - of public interest
MM’s letter to her father - of interest to the public

Iknowthingsthatwillhappen · 04/10/2020 14:45

I hope AN win.

OVienna · 04/10/2020 14:55

@Trut

PC’s letters to ministers - of public interest MM’s letter to her father - of interest to the public
MM's letter to her father - contents already in the public domain thanks to MM's leakage of letter to friends and willing dissemination to People magazine. Mr Markle felt he had the right to state his own case contrary to this account and relied on a letter addressed to him to do so. We'll soon see what the judge's take is on it all.

PC's letters to ministers - tried his darnest to keep these quiet but the judge disagreed.

AnneOfQueenSables · 04/10/2020 15:16

iirc MM's case against AN has two components. imo M should win the copyright component. AN should win the privacy component because the existence and content of the letter was already in the public domain because of the People article.

If MM had taken a case against People instead, then I would have expected her to win both parts (assuming People couldn't prove she had leaked the letter to them or was aware it was being leaked).

What nonsense! As a BAME person myself I have experienced not a whisper of such abuse;
, and have never felt that I am being driven from the site or any discussion. Usually my race is never even mentioned. Perhaps, if you do experience it, it's due to your tone? A little sensitive, maybe?

I'm in the publishing world and BAME is the term used. As I said, the first I've heard of this BIPOC thing was when you mentioned it.

You can refer to yourself as you wish, but if you use American or very obscure terms, and people question you on it, it's not necessarily racist.

Oldbutstillgotit · 04/10/2020 15:47

I hope MM loses . I hope we find out the truth behind FF.
However I am pretty sure MM supporters will then scream racism .

Has it been revealed what type of visa he has? I’d be really surprised if he does have to pay tax and isn’t on a diplomatic visa.

It most certainly does !

Oldbutstillgotit · 04/10/2020 17:07
