Agreed. I’m disabled which is the acceptable term in the U.K.

When we visited the US did I berate them for using imo the outdated word ‘handicap’. No I did not. It’s a different country with a different culture & terminology. The two countries do not necessarily marry up just because we share a common language. I’m not knowledgeable enough on the subject but I don’t think we expect the same from other English speaking countries. So why should we bow to American terminology?

The aim of certain contributions to this thread seems to be to personally abuse and smear posters either in the hope of derailing every avenue of discussion or in the hope of getting the thread deleted.

It reminds me of the tactics of TRAs and Momentum and over-zealous liberals who try to drive conversations and discussions from a public place because they disagree with them.
It is the antithesis of free speech. It is completely insincere because it relies upon the artifice of pretending to participate in debate whilst actually trying to close debate down.
I do wonder how our education system has produced a generation so unaware of the value of open debate, so unable to discuss without abuse and so oblivious to the different social, political and historic contexts in different countries. I hope it's a blip. If not then this is a very precarious time in history.

Can we agree not to derail the thread with accusations of racism? I haven't seen that myself here (but people can report if they think something is). There definitely is criticism on Meghan elsewhere that is partly or mostly based on racism.

froggygoneacourting · 04/10/2020 12:48

I'd have thought your deleted posts would have made you more familiar with the MN guidelines froggy. But it seems not.

Gee, with MNHQ re-instating so many of my deleted posts and confirming they were only deleted due to malicious false reports, it's so hard to keep track. Grin Grin Grin

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 04/10/2020 12:51

There is definitely racism at the core of a lot of people's dislike of Meghan, you only need to read the DM comments to see that. I honestly don't see much of that on this thread though. Anyway, the extracts from this new book make it abundantly clear that MM was never going to fit in the RF. She is far too big a personality. She clearly did not understand what she was getting in to and when the penny dropped she didn't waste time running for the door. The fall out is really what is interesting. The monarchy is seeming very outdated to the next generation and this shitshow will either make or break it.

froggygoneacourting · 04/10/2020 13:01

Wow. A biracial poster uses a term to describe themselves that you don't like/don't think she should be allowed to use, and it sparks two pages of abuse, lies, and hypocrisy? That says everything about the agenda some posters have.

I do not want some self-appointed holier than thou vigilante telling me I can’t use a word because they decided yesterday that it was offensive.

Except you're the one doing that, not me. You're the one throwing a massive tantrum because I used a word you don't like. You're the one throwing nasty-names around. You're the one engaging in bullying to try to force black and biracial posters to not use certain words purely on the grounds you personally dislike that word, and for some bizarre reason you believe it's your right to police the language black and biracial posters are allowed to use.

Please copy and paste the exact post where I or anyone else has told you that you're not allowed to use certain words? Oh right, you can't. Because it's a lie. All I did was use the term of my preference. Why is that not allowed? Why are you allowed to dictate what words black people are allowed to call themselves, but a black person simply using the self-descriptor of their choice is being [inset string of insults here]?

For whoever asked: I work in theatre and TV/film. The term BAME has been explicitly banned within parts of the UK entertainment industry, following a large-scale survey showing that the majority of non-white theatre workers find it offensive. Search for the results of the "BAME Over" survey, there's tons of info out there about why this term is banned and widely considered offensive.

www.belgrade.co.uk/stories/a-statement-on-eradicating-the-use-of-the-term-bame/

I personally don't consider BAME to be offensive, and BAME is my preferred term. I am simply in the habit of using the preferred terminology I am asked to use at work, and because it is common to automatically) use the term you hear most frequently.

It's just insane and yet more evidence of the non-stop abuse and determination to drive black and biracial posters off this site, that that I'm being torn to shreds and bullied and having obviously false accusations thrown at me, simply because I automatically without thinking used the term that I hear around me every day. Why do you care what term I use to describe myself? It has literally nothing to do with you.

The aim of certain contributions to this thread seems to be to personally abuse and smear posters either in the hope of derailing every avenue of discussion or in the hope of getting the thread deleted.

Then why don't you stop?

Are you saying that MNHQ don’t read your posts, so many of which are still deleted and I’ve yet to personally see one reinstalled but will believe you, and just delete them purely because they are asked to do so and not because they read them and make their own decision that they breach the guidelines? It seems odd you are saying MNHQ don’t actually read posts that are reported themselves and just delete them. It also goes at odds against the many many comments I have read where posters say the deleted comments by those who question H&M’s motives or are critical of their actions are automatically racist and that’s why their posts have been deleted. In fact we now know that it’s purely because someone maliciously reported their post. Indeed, the same must go for the threads that are deleted. MNHQ don’t read them and just delete because they are maliciously reported. Got it now. Glad that confirms none of those posts or threads contained racism now. Odd that MNHQ have said the opposite but hey ho! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for clearing that up.

I think we all knew that Netflix wouldn’t pay that amount of money for some environmental documentaries.
H and M will be expected to dish the dirt on the RF and discuss Diana.

SunbathingDragon · 04/10/2020 13:20

I can well see Netflix want to bring in money to make up for their payment. Perhaps if the initial productions are successful, H&M would have some element of control over the rest but if not Netflix will use them to get what will make money.

I doubt the productions will be successful unless H&M change and listen to advice and follow those instructions.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 04/10/2020 13:23

Of course they had to make promises to Netflix. I think Harry will regret all this one day, not carving his own path etc but leaving the RF in such a flounce.

IrmaFayLear · 04/10/2020 13:24

Confused I am sorry you feel so offended and angry, froggygoneacourting. My “word police” comment was a general observation, not directed solely at you. It was exasperation at people crying “gotcha!” if a person mistakenly uses an outmoded (as of five minutes ago) term.

M and H are a couple massively in the public eye and it’s interesting (and fun!) to talk about them. Constantly trying to make all the chat about something else is awfully tiresome and of course gets the threads derailed and deleted.

In an ideal world, the case would have been settled out of court by now, and this particular gesture of regal power would have been a warning to other newspapers and media outlets to back off – or else.

I think settling out of court was what was expected when the claim was lodged and I think the reason it’s still going ahead is because Meghan thinks winning will mean the media will back off.

IrmaFayLear · 04/10/2020 13:30

I think a big blow for Meghan was the ruling that the five friends could remain anonymous. If the court had ruled that they should be named, then she could have withdrawn honourably saying she couldn’t drop her friends in it. The anonymity thing totally backfired.

Agreed and it’s not really a lose for ANL either as their names don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. It’s what Meghan did and did she or didn’t she tell her friends about the letter and permit/ask them to speak to People. The judge has said their names won’t necessarily be protected in court, so it’s not even a long term decision.

Yeah, in an ideal world for H&M maybe. For those of us interested in calling out the hypocrisy of the great and the good using the media when it suits them (hello, PEOPLE) but getting incensed when the tables are turned, not such an ideal world.

SunbathingDragon · 04/10/2020 13:38

OVienna if Meghan loses, I hope this will be the beginning of the end of super injunctions by the rich and famous.

MissEliza · 04/10/2020 13:42

Regarding the issue of H facing a tax bill, I honestly believe both governments will stop H's and the RF's finances being scrutinised. It's really naive to think H will be treated just like any other British citizen in the US. The same goes for the visa issue. Someone will have sorted it for him without a moment's stress for him.
