@ Roussette @froggygoneacourting

Could one of you answer why they don’t give up their Sussex titles if they want to be financially independent on their own merits rather than deal with the constant accusations that they are still clinging on to their royal status ?

Roussette · 20/09/2020 12:57

I do have to say...having a lighting engineer father will do sod all landing you a major part in a TV series!. I can't imagine you can be serious with that assertion

Roussette · 20/09/2020 13:02

@Oldbutstillgotit
I have no idea. I am not au fait with how this works constitutionally.
Do you know that they are desperate to hang on to them? Is there a reputable source that says they are clinging onto their titles?
Whether they've got them or not, like Diana they'll always be known by their titles
Everything I see is more 'Harry and Meghan' than titled bollocks

Roussette · 20/09/2020 13:08

Incidentally, if their titles go, by whatever means, there will be nothing else to harangue them for.
Independent
Frogmore paid
Earning their own money
(Security costs should not be mentioned here given ghastly PAndrew, David Cameron and any old minister gets security, he is the future king's son after all!)

I presume everyone will be happy with whatever they do then! It'll be very refreshing ☺️

AnneOfQueenSables · 20/09/2020 13:10

Careful froggy your misogyny and classism are showing.

I feel sorry for H&M that they seem to have attracted an overly emotional, misogynist group of online supporters. Lots of celebrities have to try to manage those kind of fandoms but luckily most RFs have managed to avoid them up until now.

derxa · 20/09/2020 13:10

equestrianism is largely about money and access to the best horses and best trainers. Zara certainly wouldn’t be a “top equestrian“ if she’d grown up in a three-bed semi in Hull. Oh come now. Zara's a highly skilled horse woman. Not many people have the physical courage that three day eventing requires. Yes she had a mother and father who were Olympians in the sport. That's more important than money.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lester_Piggott Lester Piggott's came from a line of jockeys stretching generations back.
I like Zara very much and I really admire her mother.

Most of her income comes from consultancy fees and selling her name and status as a royal.

Try again.

Charlotte Dujardin had a very middle class upbringing and her parents are on record that they went without to help her pursue her career. She is now regarded as probably the greatest dressage rider of all time.

I had an idyllic childhood with plenty of horse riding so if you really want, I can list many equestrians who made it without money. Without a doubt money helped Zara but she also has parents (only one of them royal) who have exception equestrian skills which she has inherited. Money can buy you lessons and horses but you need skill as well.

froggygoneacourting · 20/09/2020 13:12

Yes, I’m certain if they were to reject their titles that everyone would be very happy and that we definitely wouldn’t have a dozen outraged threads screeching about how they’re snubbing the Queen and how dare they.

She landed the role on Suits (and several movie roles prior to that) before she got married. She was with Trevor Engelson for about 9 years and they were married for about 2 of those years.

Her first husband, a film producer, was said to have boosted her film career because of his job and there is no doubt MM was in films he was producing which does lead credibility to that.

Like Zara, I think MM had an ability to act because she would not have continued to be able to work in that field otherwise. However, by no stretch of the imagination (unless you are part of the Sussex Squad) has she ever been an A list actress.

I didn’t think Diana ever lost the Princess of Wales title?

They have and as Labour saw in the last election, with Momentum, it can backfire and alienate people.
froggygoneacourting · 20/09/2020 13:24

Meghan landed the role on Suits in 2011. I checked and as of 2011, her then-boyfriend had only five producing credits, mostly on relatively obscure not very successful movies or made-for-TV movies.

The idea that Meghan’s career was due to dating a minor producer with only a handful of credits - in the same thread that people are denying/downplaying that actual royals succeed due to nepotism - is a massive stretch even by the normal standards of this thread.

Roussette · 20/09/2020 13:26

The exH maybe, her father not.
I worked in TV behind the scenes for a number of years, the riggers, lighting crew, sound engineers, would not be able to pull strings like that

Oldbutstillgotit · 20/09/2020 13:28

Roussette In their own words they were Upset at not being allowed to use Sussex Royal. They have kept HRH but agreed not to use it .
They could renounce the Sussex titles but I would be very surprised if they did.
I am not sure what PA has to do with this - I doubt you will find any supporters of this ghastly man on here !

Roussette · 20/09/2020 13:29

I was only pointing out he still has security worth £300k a year, that's all

froggygoneacourting · 20/09/2020 13:34

there is no doubt MM was in films he was producing which does lead credibility to that.

Apart from a 24-second cameo as a bartender in the film “Remember Me” she’s never acted in any projects her first husband produces or worked on.

I very much doubt a 24-second cameo made that much of a difference to her career.

Samcro · 20/09/2020 13:45

does make me lol at the people calling for them to drop their titles.
can you imagine the post if they did?
they would be called all sorts for being rude to HM and so on.
sadly there are people who will never be satisfied what ever they do.

Indeed, let's all hope they do. It would be great if they renounced the Duke and Duchess of Sussex title as well as their HRHs. My respect for them would increase no end. I think the British public would be much more likely to buy Meghan's 'female empowerment' and 'feminist' claims if she were simply to use Markle.

I very much doubt a 24-second cameo made that much of a difference to her career.

Off the top of my head there is The Candidate that Trevor (who jointly ran the production company called Underground, and worked as a talent agent recruiting for it) got her a role on and another one about 9/11.

It all makes a difference to a career. It’s something on a CV rather than having nothing at all. It’s naive to think otherwise.

Given up disputing Zara then?

Oldbutstillgotit · 20/09/2020 13:47

@ Samcro I don’t agree . As far as I am concerned I would think more of them if they did drop their titles . I would wish them well.

derxa · 20/09/2020 13:47

if she’d grown up in a three-bed semi in Hull. And while we're at it. What's wrong with growing up in a three-bed semi in Hull? Grin

SunbathingDragon · 20/09/2020 13:50

@Roussette

I’d imagine there are a fair few people who would see him as a target because of his own actions right now!

I would hope that his predominantly staying quietly out of public sight means that some of that security is part of what would be included in general for Royal Lodge (even if empty) and the Windsor Great Estate as the area surely has to be tightly monitored at all times and especially when HMQ is in residence nearby.

Certainly I begrudge any extra going on him but in all honesty, who doesn’t?

Roussette · 20/09/2020 13:51

So are we all agreed then that if they drop their titles, all will be well and the endless criticism of them will stop?!
That will be a very exciting day can't wait! Grin

Do you not think it seems at odds to want to leave the positions of senior royals and have a completely independent life whilst keeping titles bestowed on those as a sign of their position in the family? I can’t see how anyone can want to leave the family but keep their place in the succession (why when the role isn’t for them) and the titles that signify their link to it.

They don’t need to do it in a rude manner; they just need to stop using them. When they were told they could no longer use HRH they still continued to do so until within a few hours of the cutoff when again, absolutely no need for it.
