Royals do not accept designer clothes for free. While assistants like Natasha Archer, who works for Kate Middleton, call in several options from designers, after they have chosen an outfit the others are returned and the one that is worn is paid for.

@Roussette here's an article about it (not about MM per se, just about the process)

Thanks for the info in that article. It looks like the balance has been tipped from wearing something mega expensive for the pleasure of it, and being paid to wear it, but it is the Oscars after all. And some refuse to be paid to wear merchandise.

As far as Meghan, it is just rumour of course. I don't really take much notice of rumours.

MichaelMumsnet · 16/06/2020 08:24

We've removed a couple of posts in this thread and are thinking about taking the whole thing down if it continues to be the kind of comments that we outline in our moderation statement.

While it's perfectly possible for people to criticise her because of things she’s said or done, there's no doubt that some of the flack Meghan Markle has faced is also due in no small part to her being a prominent black woman. So we will work harder to bear this context in mind and crack down harder on people who seem to be on Mumsnet mainly to contribute posts that criticise her or speculate about her actions in an unpleasant way. Because frankly, it’s not what we want Mumsnet to be about.

Oldbutstillgotit · 16/06/2020 08:25

Am I right in saying that the dress she wore for her formal engagement photos cost more than £50,000 ?
Really struggling to work out how 1 dress can cost that much ( other than a wedding dress ).

lifestooshort123 · 16/06/2020 08:27

Yes I thought she looked slightly pregnant in those ‘pap’ shots delivering the meals on wheels so it wouldn’t surprise me.
Slightly pregnant - I love it!

Roussette · 16/06/2020 08:27

All Royals wear expensive dresses. I think it's wrong to just focus on Meghan quite frankly.

FruitPastillesaregood · 16/06/2020 08:30

I think perhaps she thought she was expected to wear mega expensive outfits as that’s what celebrities do in the US. Also probably made her feel more confident when she was a new member. Unfortunately she just didn’t understand her role or public perception. Plus not wearing British designers most of the time. Kate wore high street and much lower end stuff for the first years of her marriage, and she’s the wife of the heir. I think she looked a lot better then than she does now in the often very severe clothes she wears.

TheNavigator · 16/06/2020 08:50

I like Meghan's style, she usually looks fabulous - I suppose it is a matter of personal taste. As Rousette says, all Royals wear expensive clobber (the men included) so it seems odd to single out Meghan for this.

EthelMayFergus · 16/06/2020 09:45

It seems odd to single out Meghan for this. It's because her clothing expenditure has been so much more expensive than anyone else. The combined cost of the top seven royals, including Charles, William, Catherine, Sophie and Camilla was less than Meghan's. And why was Harry's wedding so much more expensive than William's when William is the heir? So much was given to this couple by UK taxpayers with so little given back, and to add insult to injury the UK citizens have been deemed racist for daring to criticise them, or even question it.

thisenglishlife · 16/06/2020 10:15

Kate wore high street and much lower end stuff for the first years of her marriage
Kate also wore the following top designers in her very first year: Alexander McQueen, Alice Temperley, Amanda Wakely, Catherine Walker, Erdem, Jenny Packham, Matthew Williamson, Missoni, Roksanda Ilincic and Roland Mouret.

Sophie wears a lot of top designers, but her outfits aren't costed like Kate's and Meghan's.

The engagement photo dress was pre joining the Royal family and could have been borrowed. If Meghan did pay full retail price for her most expensive dresses, then I don't agree with that.

On a thread about Meghan and Harry? Doesn’t seem odd to me.

I’m enjoying it so hope it continues.

HarryDaylight · 16/06/2020 10:49

As Prince Charles pays for the working wardrobes of both Catherine and Meghan, I am guessing that this would be classified as business expenses and would be tax deductible and vat refundable.

Also, most companies would charge wholesale rather than retail if they charged at all. Their PR teams would liaise with the two Duchess's stylists.

That said, the cost of Meghan's wardobe for costumes worn once only will still be pretty staggering. I wonder who officially owns them.

bluebell34567 · 16/06/2020 11:04

I wonder who officially owns them. thats a good question.

SunbathingDragon · 16/06/2020 11:07

Sometimes members of the royal family wait a few years before wearing an outfit again, which Meghan hasn’t had the chance to do. I wonder whether much of her wardrobe was deemed more showbiz and not appropriate for royal functions, whereas Kate for example had a longer period of time to adjust to entering the family and bought accordingly during that time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The cost of some of the outfits both of them have worn seems ridiculous to me and certainly wasteful when you consider what’s going on in the world.

It’s also possible Meghan’s body shape changed after having Archie. Mine certainly changed after pregnancy, so perhaps what had previously fitted her doesn’t any longer or else doesn’t look flattering. Whilst I agree with many of the comments about Meghan, I still feel that it’s understandable someone would want to dress themselves in a way they look good when being scrutinised so much in the media and on forums.

Oldbutstillgotit · 16/06/2020 11:41

I still think it’s sad they decided to leave as I believe they could have been a huge bonus to the RF especially during these troubled times .
I do think they could have tried harder for longer . As has been said before most people joining the RF ( especially women) have a rough ride . It’s not right but they tough it out ( Sophie and Camilla being examples) .

Oldbutstillgotit · 16/06/2020 11:42

@ thisenglishlife that’s quite a list for such a short time !

ajandjjmum · 16/06/2020 12:04

@ thisenglishlife that’s quite a list for such a short time !
And that's just the British designers?
thisenglishlife · 16/06/2020 12:23

Covers tops, trousers, dresses, jackets, coats, shoes, bags, jewellery, etc - including those previously owned.

It can't be claimed that Meghan doesn't wear British brands.

Viviennemary · 16/06/2020 12:23

Camilla had a very tough time. I didn't approve of her at all. However, there she is year in year out. So she is now just part of the furniture as it were. No moaning. But it does help she has a wide circle of friends and very supportive family in this country. And her own house to retreat to for a break. Sounds ideal.

thisenglishlife · 16/06/2020 12:28

It also covers pre-marriage events - the UK cities tour, Invictus events, etc
