That's a bit much...
free loading
delusions of grandeur
entitlement

Bottom line - I want them to succeed
You don't

caperberries · 11/06/2020 10:20

Yes it's a bit rich to be bleating about a more equitable world if you are a direct beneficiary of one of the world's most inequitable institutions.

H&M might have earned my respect if they had politely withdrawn from the RF, rejected titles and honours and quietly gone about establishing a charitable endeavour.

However, for me, the withdrawal statements they released in January and March were very telling - showcasing the true depths of their pomposity and perceived self-importance.

And their behaviour since, from couch-surfing in the mansions of people they barely know and leaking regular updates to media cronies about their (frankly banal) activities, such as Harry's unkempt Zoom calls with bewildered volunteers in the UK, has really only served to cement this impression.

This also applies to Meghan's recent speech, replete with plagiarisms, which felt like an insincere audition tape for the lucrative speakers circuit.

They could have done this if people didn't keep leaking their plans ahead of time. It was not them.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 10:24

Ahhh... let's add pomposity and self importance to my list.
And banal

Couch surfing - oh give me a break!

Meghan's speech was well received. Funny that.

I can feel the dislike and disgust oozing out of this thread.

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 10:25

The Telegraph also did an investigation into their new charity set up (checking domain names and similar), so they had to confirm that. It would have had a proper reveal once ready otherwise.

LightWaterandTime · 11/06/2020 10:28

Andrew is far worse than either of them - but we are not discussing Andrew. There is a great article in the telegraph about him today.

People tolerate the rest of the Royals because they seem to 'get' that they have a life of enormous wealth and privilege but in return they do as they are told, they don't moan about how difficult life is and they don't lecture the plebs. They realise that the attention and respect they get is for their 'role' not them personally. They don't have any particular gifts but they have found themselves in a position of status and it is their position that makes people listen.

Viviennemary · 11/06/2020 10:30

Succeed in what exactly. Making money for themselves and persuading other people to part with their money for charity. Hmm

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 10:32

Charles has a long history of political involvement. Charles, William (and Harry) all have environmental initiatives and interests. William said that Africans should have fewer children (one of the times at a Tusk speech).

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 10:33

persuading other people to part with their money for charity
Like every other fundraiser?

Roussette · 11/06/2020 10:33

Really..... charities out there need support, need money, need public figures bringing attention to their cause.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 10:34

Perhaps we ought to ban Red Nose Day then. Those celebs/actors and even the odd RF member go out their way to persuade the great british public to give give give.

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 10:34

Exactly!
Viviennemary · 11/06/2020 10:37

Good post caperberries. I'm glad they were told no to their plans by HM the Queen.

ButteryPuffin · 11/06/2020 11:13

I have posted on previous threads about my surprise that Meghan has not said more about the plight of the theatre industry at the moment, as patron of the National Theatre. It might be expected as a patron that someone would do what they can to promote their causes during difficult times in particular. Her support for Black Lives
Matter is very welcome and entirely appropriate IMHO, and I can see why that's the priority at the moment. At the same time, I can't imagine that her schedule is so rammed at the moment that she couldn't also record a video for the NT to share on their social media channels.
Harry really needs to find a new sense of what he is going to work for and support from here on. I think he is right to stay in the background on BLM, but he will need to find something..

I do agree with @Rousette that it's unfair to slate anyone in the public eye for encouraging others to give through charity when they have money of their own. The exception might be where the celebrity is taking an opportunity to profit themselves from this. I always disliked the fact that Terry Wogan took payment for presenting Children in Need, for example - he was already on a high level BBC salary and should in my view have added his presenting fee to the Children in Need pot.

Kate was patron of The Art Room, it closed this year. Sophie is patron of Shooting Stars and it has lost £2 million during lockdown, they have closed one of their two hospices.

Absolutely!

Sorry, could you clarify the point you are making here? I'm a bit lost.

Kate is doing fantastic work. Just today KP has been promoting the National Portrait gallery's #HoldStill2020 initiative, which encourages people to share images of their experiences during lockdown.

Kate and Sophie manage to strike that careful balance, promoting causes well without making it all about themselves, or using the causes as a vehicle for self-promotion, which is what Meghan has done, time and again.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 12:02

Isn't it amazing how popular Sophie and Kate have become on MN?

Froq · 11/06/2020 12:17

Kate and Sophie manage to strike that careful balance, promoting causes well without making it all about themselves

Yes they’re both excellent at that.

MissEliza · 11/06/2020 12:32

@LightWaterandTime that absolutely sums it up.

In relation to the point about Meghan has to do more for her patron charity

Kate saying she hasn't visited the Action for Addiction building recently. The staff member said she that hasn't visited for eight years. Kate said that it felt like yesterday. Sorry, only video I could find right now:

Roussette · 11/06/2020 12:40

thisenglishlife you should know that H&M are subject to special rules that other members of the RF are not!

Froq · 11/06/2020 12:48

They most certainly are where MN is concerned.

SunbathingDragon · 11/06/2020 12:59

@Roussette

thisenglishlife you should know that H&M are subject to special rules that other members of the RF are not!
The issue is that they sometimes come across as thinking that they are.

It would be nice to see H&M focus on a few specific causes or charities and even in lockdown they can do video speeches rather than coming across as just supporting something currently in the public eye. Meghan clearly has supported against racism in the past and Harry has been supporting and talking about MH for a while now. It’s when they preach about the environment but live a lifestyle at odds with what they are telling others to do that they receive so much hostility (and rightly so in my opinion).

It looks like Andrew did fairly little as a royal which doesn’t surprise me! I doubt much of what he did needs to continue and slimming down the monarchy can also slim down a large amount of the unnecessary patronages.

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 13:06

The Earl and Countess of Wessex Charitable Trust will not be publishing an annual reports for the 3rd year in a row, as they received only £770 in income this year ($960 USD or 860 Euro). And had expenses of £154,431.

mobile.twitter.com/Gertsroyals/status/1267565498549575687

They Wessexes set up their charity 20 years ago.

Sophie also sold access and left her PR business £1.7 million in debt (that was never paid off).
