I don't think Prince Andrew giving up his patronages is going to create much extra 'work' as I doubt he was much of an asset for any of them - more of an ass. I think there has been a bit of a work creation scheme going on for the modern royal family in any case, lots of pointless ribbon cutting we can all do without. A slimmed down version of just Charles & Camilla and W&K would be fine. None at all would be even better Wink.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 08:29

The feeling I get from some of the posts on here re the scattergun approach of supporting charities and being an 'add on' for an actor or musician... is that H&M shouldn't be supporting these charities?

Would you prefer it that they didn't? I'm not sure the charities would agree with that! I am sure the charities have an option to say 'no' we don't need the publicity if they want. And they haven't. Surely it's better to do something than to do nothing? Would you rather they just swan around doing nowt?
I presume you don't like their method rather than disliking them doing it in the first place?

Roussette · 11/06/2020 08:36

Prince Andrew and his patronage of 2-300 charities, he surely did very little with that number. I have seen the list of charities, I've never heard of them, just these below sum it up...

California State Police
Police organisation for the State of California, USA.
Region: Rest of world
Members of the Royal Family:
The Duke of York, Honorary Police Inspector

Canadian Canoe Museum
Website: canoemuseum.ca
The Canadian Canoe Museum preserves and celebrates the art, culture and heritage of paddled watercraft.
Region: Canada
Members of the Royal Family:
The Duke of York, Patron

And very very many Golf Clubs, probably about a third. I doubt W&K are going to be worked off their feet with that lot!

LightWaterandTime · 11/06/2020 08:46

My criticism about their scattergun approach is that it damages their credibility - it gives the impression of shallowness. They want to be taken seriously but this takes hard work and commitment. Not just making the odd speech here and there.

Look at the Obama's - they were working at grass roots levels in local communities fo years before Barack entered politics. Their commitment to their causes is evident and is therefore credible and taken seriously. Otherwise, what distinguishes them from any other social media influencer or You tuber?

Roussette · 11/06/2020 08:53

We don't know how involved they are behind the scenes do we? It really might be much much more than 'the odd speech here and there'.

LightWaterandTime · 11/06/2020 09:02

@Roussette if that is the case then they need to work on getting this across. To be honest, if I see that either of them has commented, given a speech or written an essay on any topic at the moment - I probably wouldn't bother to watch it or read it. It is unlikely to contain anything of any depth or insight - it will be full of sound bites and fluff.

If their sole aim is to bring publicity to the causes they support then fair enough but I got the impression they were leaving the Royal Family to do 'real work of value'. I haven't seen any evidence of this yet.

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 09:21

It's the lockdown

Wolfgirrl · 11/06/2020 09:22

@Roussette

There is a bizarre 'proving a negative' theory that is constantly wheeled out whenever the royals are accused of being lazy, or not fulfilling any purposeful function.

Seeing as they publicised facetiming the Queen for a chat, why would you assume they do all this amazing work undercover?

Isnt it more logical to assume they don't?

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 09:33

it would have been far better for them to move to Africa. Harry could focus on Conservation and Meghan could have used her global stage to highlight and promote African causes outside of Africa. Naomi Campbell has done a lot of amazing work in this area.
Does Naomi live in Africa? Harry set up Sentebale when he was 21. He has a long history of charity work in Africa. If they help raise awareness and money and have chairty staff in other countries, why would they need to move to another continent?

Nanasueathome · 11/06/2020 09:45

I would really like to know how they are going to earn millions to support their lifestyle and also pay their Staff
Whilst the charity work and involvement is excellent they still need to be earning hard cash

LightWaterandTime · 11/06/2020 09:45

Choosing to live in a mansion in Malibu seems to be such a bizarre choice though for a couple who profess to want to dedicate their lives to the support of charity and good causes.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 09:53

Wolfgirl

We DON'T KNOW. You are making assumptions. I am providing an alternative viewpoint.

Also I cannot tell you the number of times I have been asked to 'prove a positive' either.

Oh dear. They have to live in a small house now do they in order to support charities?

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 09:56

So any celebrity/famous person/royal shouldn't get to live in whatever house type they'd like if they are linked to charities? Any other rights you'd like to deny them? Any other rules for H&M to live by that don't apply to others like them?
Roussette · 11/06/2020 10:00

^^ This

LightWaterandTime · 11/06/2020 10:04

There is a disconnect between what they say and what they do - this seems obvious.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 10:06

To you, yes

Wolfgirrl · 11/06/2020 10:08

You seem to be missing the point that making your charity 'work' and ensuing speeches an enormous money spinner is unethical.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 10:10

Do we know that all the charities they support is because it is 'an enormous money spinner' for them?

TheNavigator · 11/06/2020 10:11

There is a disconnect between what they say and what they do - this seems obvious.

But you could level that accusation at all members of the Royal Family & celebs - live in a palace and act like they care about the rest of us. I don't understand why H&M are singled out for criticism on this.

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 10:11

Have they made any money thus far from it? Criticise them when they do.

Andrew was making money from Pitch at the Palace!

Wolfgirrl · 11/06/2020 10:12

@roussette

They claim to want financial independence, yet their only enterprise is their 'charitable foundation'.

Where else could the money come from? Bar the UK taxpayer in the form of Prince Charles.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 10:13

And paying his private PA £350,000 from his Charity, that's recent news. Charity is now being closed down.

Roussette · 11/06/2020 10:14

It's been just over 2 months since Harry officially left the RF.
Early days

Wolfgirrl · 11/06/2020 10:16

Sigh it isnt even up and running yet, hence why they are free loading like mad by staying in the mansions of people they barely know. They could probably afford to rent a place themselves, but do they? No. They have delusions of grandeur and entitlement which are far beyond what they can afford. So much for 'independence'.

thisenglishlife · 11/06/2020 10:20

They said they were planning to run a not for profit, rather than the more specific foundation.

They can make money from interviews, as speakers (everyone from BBC presenters to former politicians make a lot of extra money this way), a possible Netflix deal, voice-over work, writing work, etc. Many famous people receive many things for free - everything from clothing, jewellery and cars to cleaning products.
