See, that’s what I agree with the criticism about the hypocrisy around environmental issues, or excessive spending of money on clothes and this applies to them all. I found it funny when Meghan said when they go to Botswana they camp anywhere. That was such a lie as the Okavango is full of luxury expensive camps that even locals can’t afford as celebrities and rich people fly into. I doubt they even mix with the locals except the chefs and cleaned in these luxury camps😂. It just seemed like Meghan was trying to relate to the clearly educated attendees from Africa but it seemed so tide deaf. I know some of us who actually know Botswana sniggered reading that.

Anyway sorry for getting carried away with that

RosesandIris · 29/03/2020 17:46

I often wonder what Doria thinks of all this. She seems a very modest, self effacing woman living a quiet life. She must find Meghan's life very strange.

Gosh need to read before I post. Hope what I have written makes some sort of sense , haven’t yet learnt how to tag or edit🤷‍♂️

wufti · 29/03/2020 18:00

to me, it's all a balance:

we want them to scrub up well and put on a good show when required (formal events)
we want them to keep their political views largely to themselves so if they meet world leaders (part of the job) they don't put their foot in it - and their job spans the life of many parliaments of different hues.
we want them to promote good causes but reasonably quietly
we want them on the whole to be good people (doesn't always quite work out)
we want them to shake lots of hands, attend lots of small functions, unveil plaques in the back of beyond.

provided that happens, i'm ok with royalty and paying for their lifestyles and security and I can live with some private jets etc. it comes down to balance

h&M want everything their way - no give or take - and that is what riles folk on this thread

Wheresthebeach · 29/03/2020 18:01

I think that if the RF don’t make them foot the bill, or foot the bill themselves, it will be the beginning of a serious discussion about the RF. we simply can’t afford to waste money on these two and while the Queen is popular the RF depends on popular support. They are already impossibly rich by any standards

chrisseldah1 · 29/03/2020 18:01

@RosesandIris I too wonder sometimes what she makes of it all. It must have been really hard for her as a mother to see Meghan suffer from intense media scrutiny when pregnant. On the other hand I admire how she has kept her head down and stayed out of the media scrutiny for this long. It must be hard for her and people like Carole Middleton to be caught up with stuff about who their children married.

wufti · 29/03/2020 18:02

obviously not shake hands at the current time!!

Absolutepowercorrupts · 29/03/2020 18:05

@chrisseldah1
To tag someone just put @ before their name. There isn't an edit function on Mumsnet

HarryDaylight · 29/03/2020 18:05

chriselda So when Meghan said "when we go to Botswana we grab a backpack and pitch a tent. It's not much but that's how we like it!"

What she meant was that they stayed somewhere like the opulent andBeyond Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp? Wow.

Mummy195 · 29/03/2020 18:11

mrsCampbell

The British Media sure have vilified them.

Have no idea if the BRF has vilified them - though arguably K&W have thrown some shade, and others seem to have just stood by and watched.
I think HMQE has done her quiet show of support here and there - which the media made sure to try and side step or not emphasise . By that I mean the statements she put out about 'part of the family' references , mentioning baby A at speech, invite for lunch with H, invitation to church ( I think HM was hoping this would be interpreted like her show of support for PA when they were pictured riding in the same car to church, but the BM made sure to not print a pic of H&M coming out of a church laughing with HMQE- I found that odd, since they knew about this, but I guess that would have been interrupted the 'disrespecting for the Queen ' narrative).

Obviously PE is not part of all this, as he demonstrated at the commonwealth, but something is definitely off .

chrisseldah1 · 29/03/2020 18:12

See I wonder if the British public will ever truly be told how much the security cost will be or who will pay for it.For the reasons mentioned above by other posters, it seems like a lot of people don’t actually want taxpayers to foot the bill. Rightly or wrongly people are entitled to their opinions on this issue. I believe honestly it’s not in their best interest to divulge much about it, especially if they are America which is not in the Commonwealth. Think they probably want the issue to ride itself out and die a quick death😂. But ever time they bring out their heads to the surface with some charity, Instagram post etc people will be asking this same question. It’s actually funny. sigh: I know I’m weird.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/03/2020 18:17

I think that if the RF don’t make them foot the bill, or foot the bill themselves, it will be the beginning of a serious discussion about the RF

I wish I could think so, but frankly I'm not confident
The RF - or rather their advisers - know exactly what's said about them in general, and when the lockdown's over I predict an utter blizzard of feelgood photos and appearances, all of it scripted to the last degree
Most worrying of all, it'll probably work with their fans (though never ask me why)

mrscampbellblackagain · 29/03/2020 18:17

The media vilify all in the royal family - that's what they do. I can only imagine what will be published upon the death of the DofE.

H&M should in my opinion have taken a couple of years after their marriage to just live quietly and get used to things. But they didn't appear to want that.

I think most people hope it works out for them just not at the expense of the British tax payer.

chrisseldah1 · 29/03/2020 18:17

@HarryDaylight yep she was fibbing lol. Look I actually like Meghan and Kate not that I need to put that out there. But no way was Meghan and Harry wild camping in Botswana ( which is actually illegal to do) . They were not on some cheap self drive safari most people do, so it’s funny to me that she had to make it seem like they are like Bear grills or whatever his name is of the savannah 🤣

HarryDaylight · 29/03/2020 18:23

chrisseldah1
She was fibbing big time!
🤣🤣🤣

DandyPenguin · 29/03/2020 18:24

but the BM made sure to not print a pic of H&M coming out of a church laughing with HMQE

@Mummy195 but was there such a pic? If so how do you know and can you share it please.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 29/03/2020 18:27

I often wonder what Doria thinks of all this. She seems a very modest, self effacing woman living a quiet life.

That's how she seems. I'm not convinced that's how she actually is. She's an unknown quantity who may well have more influence than people give her credit for.

DandyPenguin · 29/03/2020 18:29

On another note, it would be hypothetically tiresome if long-term critics of this discussion came on under a name change pretending they’re new posters.

7Penguins · 29/03/2020 18:32

Indeed Dandy, and rehashing old arguments into a derailment spiral.

DandyPenguin · 29/03/2020 18:35

Yes 7 or employing the Trojan horse technique.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 29/03/2020 18:37

On another note, it would be hypothetically tiresome if long-term critics of this discussion came on under a name change pretending they’re new posters.

Wouldn't be the first time. If hypothetically this happened it would be very silly as they are so easy to spot when they do.

7Penguins · 29/03/2020 18:38

I just looked up HAM’s Botswana tent camp.

After the world returns to normal I think I’ll visit.
Maybe I’ll bump into them and humble MM will be so approachableand friendly we’ll share a lipstick in the camp toilets or whatever. Grin

chrisseldah1 · 29/03/2020 18:42

Re long term critics of the thread pretending they are newcomers, I hope that’s not aimed at me. I have been lurking on Mumsnet for a very very long time, I mostly read threads on SN boards as that’s an issue that affects me personally. I got interested in RF threads since the Harry & Meghan announcement. I see how a newcomer can be viewed with suspicion especially if they mentioned anything which relates to Africa as I know there was a discussion a while ago with someone offering the South African perspective. But still weird that I could be confused with other posters? Lol maybe this was not even aimed at me and I’m insecure who knows.

7Penguins · 29/03/2020 18:46

chris we are speaking hypothetically here Wink
It’s all good, keep posting - delurkers often add new perspectives and interesting points. Cake

chrisseldah1 · 29/03/2020 18:46

Anyway enjoyed the discussion so far and actually surprised at myself I actually posted. Yay me. Will go back to lurking now( which now seems like stalking as outed myself🤣). Hope everyone not feeling well gets better soon and keep safe everyone
