To me it’s clear two factors have determined their move. We’ve basically been told that.

  1. Canada not paying for their security.
  1. They were planning to move anyway but brought it forward before the lockdown so they didn’t get stuck in Canada for months on end.

Neither reason puts the health of their son first.

Although at the risk of sounding like I’m wearing a tin foil hat, I strongly suspect there’s a lot we’re not being told. I’m prepared to believe they be we went back to the place in Canada after leaving the UK in early March.

Rainbunny · 28/03/2020 13:48

What I'm fully expecting soon is the round of interviews with Ellen/Oprah etc. H&M need to double down on their story of victimhood to get publicity snd sympathy in their new hometown.

DandyPenguin · 28/03/2020 13:49

Ah bollocks typos.

I’m prepared to believe they “never went back to the house in Canada”

ButteryPuffin · 28/03/2020 13:57

But there's the reporting that they flew to the US by private jet this week?

Could they have been elsewhere in Canada but not on Vancouver Island? There were pictures of it looking uninhabited. Thought there were reports of each of them taking flights back to Canada after the Commonwealth service.

TimeLady · 28/03/2020 13:58

Me too. I'm sure there were photos of the security measures being removed when they were over here.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/03/2020 14:22

I've always thought that pretty inevitable - though it'll be on hold for now of course.
On existing form, there's simply no way they'll pass on any opportunity to build a victim narrative

Winterlife · 28/03/2020 15:28

@OVienna the thriving statement is not Canadian.

@PenguinOrHippo your analysis is correct. However, the combined marginal tax rate in California is higher than in BC.

@DandyPenguin, a recipe for your craving. I love this, but only make it once a year. This recipe is close to traditional-

OVienna · 28/03/2020 15:47

Lol, maybe she's a fan of mindless house programmes!

BarleylemonPenguin · 28/03/2020 16:06

Winterlife - That recipe looks wonderful but complicated. I might be tempted to give it a go.

I have been shunning the DM on account of their panicky coverage...but have just given in and read that Rebecca English article. One thing that does not make sense: it says that M was happy to relinquish title ("there was no other way"). Can that possibly be true? It doesn't sound right. In her shoes, having done my homework, I'd know that what would be on offer is not necessarily material comforts (just hear me out on this) but status, prestige, bowing and scraping, "the title", etc.. I'd know that there'd be no house like Bill Gates' or Aaron Spelling's (is it the same house or did I dream reading that somewhere?), or Jennifer Aniston's, there'd be no pjs or holidays in the style of the hedge funders, no private yachts...so - why would she give up the one thing that is valuable in this relationship?

Winterlife · 28/03/2020 16:16

The recipe is time consuming but easy.

I have read that the title is important to MM. However, I don’t think it matters so much in America.

Winterlife · 28/03/2020 16:18

Oh, and I don’t believe the optics are good in moving to a mansion in LA, the city with the largest homeless population in the US, in the middle of a pandemic.

Wheresthebeach · 28/03/2020 16:18

I wonder if by the time they can start doing interviews that the world will have moved on somewhat. These things are all about timings and they may have missed the boat. At least I hope so...the pity interviews would be painful and embarrassing

Ritascornershop · 28/03/2020 16:20

They would, and they would not have been better off Covid-wise on Vancouver Island. We have, I think, around 72 tested cases on the Island & most things are shut and we’re being told to stay home (bar going for walks with people we live with), so low-ish risk at the moment. Crucially, though, they wouldn’t be able to jump the queue for treatment here, or have posh private rooms in a hospital if they did get ill, they’d be slung in a shared room (unless in ICU of course, sorry, not sure what you call that? Critical care unit?).

DandyPenguin · 28/03/2020 16:44

@Winterlife thank you for the recipe ❤️ How lovely. I will try and get in the ingredients and get DH to make it Grin

DandyPenguin · 28/03/2020 16:49

@Ritascornershop in reply to one of your posts a few pages back - I can understand your frustration about people thinking Canada is part of the US.

As for the one road thing, that makes me giggle. I spent a summer a LONG time ago on the nearby Salt Springs Island. At the time that only had one traffic light and my relative still managed to have a car crash at it. Grin

Sunflower20 · 28/03/2020 17:01

Honestly sick of these two, they need to fuck off and stay away. In this pandemic they're even more irrelevant and useless.

BubblesBuddy · 28/03/2020 17:01

The Americans are not going to worry about differences in titles. They won’t get it and she’s one of theirs so it really won’t matter.

Tatler has an interesting article on her that dropped into my in box. Apparently before she met Harry, her black background wasn’t mentioned by her. She was seen as an operator in society but not one who felt she was a victim. I cannot see how Harry will enjoy his life now in the way he thought he would. He really won’t be doing very much!

OVienna · 28/03/2020 17:02

C'est une Blind.

RosesandIris · 28/03/2020 17:04

The photo of H , M and C on the balcony really creeps me out in that Rebecca English article. Meghan is gazing at Harry as though she's trying to hypnotise him whilst he's talking to Charles. She is only ever interested in the dynamic between the two of them. It's as though she's willing him to turn away from Charles and back to her. Creepy.

Harry will be the new Duke of Windsor. Sidelined and remembered for his ties! Both with American wives that didn’t understand what the RF was all about.

I wonder what will happen when the Queen dies? Meghan will be older. Not so sought after in the usa. Will they come back?

DandyPenguin · 28/03/2020 17:10

I absolutely disagree with the oft-said comment that “she didn’t understand what the RF was all about”. I think she ^understood% - she just didn’t agree or comply.

What she might not have understood is that her doing things her own way would always eventually be clamped down on by the RF. I think she was initially given a lot of leeway and the benefit of the doubt.

BarleylemonPenguin · 28/03/2020 17:12

I see how Americans may not concern themselves with titles but really, they don’t have that much money on which to be ‘players’ in Malibu. From what I’ve read, she rented her flat, car and clothes in Toronto ( I am not sure about the veracity of this) while Barry does not have that much either going by finance/media/politics standards. He lived in a “tiny” Nottingham Cottage, only has his probably now severely depleted trust fund, and...that’s about it, isn’t it?

Ritascornershop · 28/03/2020 17:13

That’s okay, @DandyPenguin , we’re certainly culturally a lot closer to them than you are :) And we see the differences more than non-Canadians do (the lack of gun culture here, our socialised medical care, the lack of organized religion as a force in politics, our parliamentary system, etc). I do find the kids where I live are sounding more American than we did growing up, the accent is flattening out and becoming more homegenous. Again, I don’t think non-Canadians would notice.

I think Salt Spring still only has one traffic light! I can’t even picture one, but I’m assuming in Ganges. I love it over there, lovely small town feel.

I’m curious to see photos of HaM’s house when they’re leaked at some point. I wonder what he’ll do all day. The hills around LA are mostly pretty dry, dusty, and ... well, personal taste, but I don’t find them pretty. Big Sur, outside San Francisco, and Northern California are all gorgeous places, but quite a drive away. I hope he’s suited to sitting around a pool all day, I would not have thought so, but perhaps?

Delurking to say that i cannot believe that their PR team hasn't launched yet the Sussex Royal Toilet Paper.
I see a business there right now!
