I wimped out of the other thread title I planned as I thought it might look goady.

But please let’s keep it as the reality-and-let's-avoid-idle-speculation-and-reliance-on-dodgy-sources thread (thanks Seneca!).

they chose to step back and need to fund their choice

He didn’t chose to be born into the RF though and thus a high profile individual who could be easily targeted.

Nor should he be forced to stay a working royal if he doesn’t want to. That’s a terrible burden.

I think they need to figure out as cost effective security as they can, but the family owe them protection. And I agree Diana will not be far from their minds.

Its tricky, the negotiation was always going to be. I'm all for more transparency, but across the board.
Hopefully, they're thinking this through for the next generation before the heat is on them. They are cute and adorable but they'll be vulnerable as they grow up and may well want independence too. So it's tough for Harry, Meghan and the Royal Family now, but hopefully will pave the way for Charlotte and George.

WinnieTheW0rm · 27/02/2020 21:43

Agree LaurieMarlow

And that is why I specified that the taxpayer continues to fund security to the level they had as senior working Royals. It was only the additional costs above thus, as a result of their future, and entirely voluntary choices, that I suggested they fund.

So they are free to leave, have a high level of security paid for, but pick up the tab if they want to live in an even more expensive style

rockingchaircandle · 27/02/2020 21:45

Wait! Blush George is the heir, I mean Louis. I'm pretty new to following the Royals!

Encyclo · 27/02/2020 21:47

Imagine the wailing from the media if they scaled back protection and something happened? It's not like we haven't had this scenario before

Roussette · 28/02/2020 07:27

Not sure why they have to have security from UK with shifts going back and forth? Surely they can employ Canadian or US security people, with a contribution from the UK equivalent to what being sixth in line to the throne should be. OK he's stepped back from being royal, but he should still have protection gien the family he was born into

Roussette · 28/02/2020 07:28

*given

mpsw · 28/02/2020 07:35

They have security travelling from UK as they receive their protect the state, and that means Met Police (currently with Mounties, reducing costs, but that expires when they step back)

The late Princess of Wales was with privately hired security when she died. Standards vary considerably. If the consensus is that they need to avoid the risks his mother chose to take, then they receive a continuation of state-provided security.

Identifying the additional cost above what a family costs who are basically in Britain (plus the odd tour or holiday) seems a sensible step.

LaurieMarlow · 28/02/2020 07:59

Did Diana not refuse security? Or is that wrong?

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 28/02/2020 08:03

I'm sure I read that Diana was offered security and refused it. But have no source just a hazy memory.

katiegoestoaldi · 28/02/2020 08:09

Diana was offered security but she was paranoid they wouldd feed back all her movements, conversations and moods back to the RF so she refused it

Samcro · 28/02/2020 08:21

if they were to pay for private security. would that have risks(as in not properly vetted)? I don't know much about this.

meercat23 · 28/02/2020 08:40

If they were to contribute to the additional costs of providing security for them outside of the UK I cant see why their security could not still be provided by the MET. I cant see why there would be an objection to it being UK personnel that looks after them. It is the big difference in the costs of UK based protection and for a situation where they will be almost entirely outside the UK

I know that for some there is an issue about the fact that they will not be carrying out any royal duties but if they were to make a reasonable contribution to the difference I think that would shift opinion.

Harry and Bon Jovi clip up on insta.

Cerseirys · 28/02/2020 11:50

JBJ looks tiny next to Harry!

Encyclo · 28/02/2020 12:00

Especially in the insta story! Harrys around 6'2 isn't he?

rockingchaircandle · 28/02/2020 12:28

I think I've reactivated an earlier crush on JBJ Blush I've just followed him on Instagram

He is short! But they look good together - maybe they could record a power ballad, launch Harry's soft rock career and his financial future could be guaranteed?

Encyclo · 28/02/2020 13:57

Love. It.

Hey, Even the lyrics could work...

Meghan dreams of running away
When she cries in the night, Harry whispers
Baby, it's okay, someday

Woah we're halfway there....

Encyclo · 28/02/2020 14:18

He did the Abbey Road pic too, with JBJ and two Invictus people.

drina27 · 28/02/2020 14:35

Very original.

Encyclo · 28/02/2020 16:07

Wow. Tough crowd.

Samcro · 28/02/2020 16:08

Roussette · 28/02/2020 16:31

Love the Abbey road picture and the footage of them about to sing. Brilliant idea of an Invictus Games charity single.

I used to know someone (still do, but lost touch) who was obsessed with JBJ, I bet she's loving this, I must drop her an email!

Mydogatemypurse · 28/02/2020 16:34

I'm happy for them. Their life is non of my business and I like both of them. I hope they find happiness x

PortiaCastis · 28/02/2020 16:48

I used to idolise jon bon when I was a little maid in primary and I would screech livin on a prayer in the playground much to the amusement of the lunchtime staff.
I like the pics of JBJ and Harry they look like they're having a lot of fun for a good cause
