A thread for those who wish to discuss what's in the news and what your take on it is.

Hi yolo
Here and in chat.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 25/01/2020 19:41

Checking in yolo and thanks for starting a new thread.

7Worfs · 25/01/2020 19:44

Thanks for the thread, yolo
Monitoring closely the spectacle, as I'm sure we 'ain't seen nothing yet' Grin

JulietJanuary · 25/01/2020 19:56

I wish them well.

I wish them all true independence and worthwhile work

ajandjjmum · 25/01/2020 20:02

I've been thinking what I would miss most if I was removed from/chose to leave the Royal Family. I think it would be the traffic cops, clearing the roads so that I could get to everywhere faster. I'd stay in just for that!

Butterymuffin · 25/01/2020 20:17

Hello, thanks yolo for the new thread!

If there is still such a thing as news being aimed at the Sunday papers, let's see what they bring tomorrow.

TheMustressMhor · 25/01/2020 20:44

Thanks yolofish.

A good idea to have a thread where we're all checked in and ready to comment when something happens - which I imagine it will.

Aridane · 25/01/2020 20:55

Wishing them well and resilience and good mental health

LydiaLangwish · 25/01/2020 21:00

Been mostly lurking over the various threads.
And now I don't know whether to post on the trivia thread or am I derailing here if I mention anything that isn't strictly H&M?

Anyway, just plopping in to say this week's Private Eye is a bumper edition with lots of Markle and Spencer jokes.

LydiaLangwish · 25/01/2020 21:04

Also, little derail, but I did love Spitting Image. For the benefit of anyone too young to remember or know what I'm talking about here is a favourite clip, following the Queen's return from a tour which included displays of dancing in New Zealand.

yolofish · 25/01/2020 21:05

both or either lydia! I just dont want to see fighting. disagreement, discussion, fine. namecalling or anything like that, nah not my thing.

yolofish · 25/01/2020 21:06

oh spitting image, I think they are planning to bring it back? not sure, but think I read that. quite honestly, politics/celebs/royals are so ridiculous that I've long thought they are all quite beyond satire, but there are definitely great jokes to be made!

Bloody hell its like the vultures circling.
Wtf will you do if nothing happens, cry.

Checking in

Bluerussian · 25/01/2020 21:13

I'm glad they are no longer central news, the terrible virus in China has taken over from that; for a while they took over from the Australian bush fires but a bit of calm regarding royals is now to be enjoyed.

I think I've read all I want to read about the Sussexes (? sp) for the time being and all I hope is that they are settling down and rediscovering what life is really all about. I do like them, always have, feel ashamed that they have been treated so shabbily by our media and I wish them well. It's excellent that the royal family are supportive of them but Harry has always been much loved.

I'm looking forward to them coming back here for a holiday later this year at which time I envisage the media being all over them with love bombing, such is the fickle nature of the beast. Princess Beatrice is getting married and she and Harry have always been close.

Thank goodness Meghan has such a lovely mother.

Thanks Yolo

Also I didn't get a chance to comment on the picture of Princess Diana posted near the end of thread 12. It's quite upsetting to see, and I'm amazed as I have never seen that picture before - has the photographer only recently released it I wonder? People must have known and covered up from very early days.

I was in Australia at the time of that tour. I do remember Women's Weekly (or similar) running a montage of pictures of her looking shy, bewildered, biting her fingernails and chewing her lip. The tone was very encouraging, no need to be nervous Di, you're doing great and we love you.
But most of the pictures from that tour show her smiling and looking glamorous. It's staggering how a young ingenue like her was able to carry off the role so convincingly most of the time.

I'm a couple of months older than Diana. No way could I have done what she did...

@LydiaLangwish

I posted that photo.
I remember the Diana years really clearly (from the UK end)
There was the odd picture of her a bit red eyed or tears in the 16 years she was in the public eye. But to see her so anguished is really shocking to me; even now; knowing ( from her own words), a fair bit of what she went through.

yolofish · 25/01/2020 21:26

Poor Diana. Awful divorce, mum was described as a 'bolter', older sister dated PC and moved on. And then it was almost as if she was on a platter for him because he had to get married and produce the heir and the spare. No wonder she went off the rails so spectacularly.

If PC and Camilla had married would it all have been different? I know they werent allowed as she had a 'past'.

H&M - they are mid 30s, so similar ages; more life experience; perhaps it will all work out in the end.

Just harking back to my question at the end of the last thread, what did Meghan actually do for all these charitable causes she was so passionate about before she met Harry? I understand that she flew out to India, whilst on a break from Suits (so presumably flew 1st class and stayed in 5* accommodation), and had a few photo ops with impoverished people, posted said photos on social media then flew home (1st class).

I just fail to see any real graft or passion from her? In contrast my DD spent eighteen months raising funds and using the money from her part time job to get herself to Borneo. She spent her summer holiday getting her hands dirty helping to build a primary school. Actually dirty, digging in mud and sleeping in a very basic dormitory. When she wasn't grafting, she was teaching English lessons to the children. Since she got home she chose to sponsor one of the children and happily pays a third of her Saturday job wage to sponsor her. Yes I know I'm biased but my daughter's actions impress me far more than MM's air brushed and Insta friendly charidee.

Leaves thread for a new life funded by anyone but moi

diddl · 25/01/2020 21:34

Camilla didn't want to marry PC, she wanted to marry APB, so her past wasn't really relevant.

CathyorClaire · 25/01/2020 21:36

Yolofish we are similar vintage Grin

Never seen that photo before but the RF have form for suppressing things they don't want the public to see.

LydiaLangwish · 25/01/2020 21:36

I think any of us would struggle.

But I think she would be very conflicted about Harry if she were around now. Torn between cheering him on and concern for William losing his right hand man. Harry was always meant to support William.
