You're on a public forum and people can and will disagree with you

I'm not 12 and don't need this pointing out. I've been pointing it out since thread one to people who have been jumping on to tell us off for having a discussion, including yesterday.

What I do know is the difference between contributing meaningfully to a discussion with an alternative point of view and using shaming tactics by telling people that they're mean and their points have no relevance, between discussion and statement for e.g.

I really feel that this cannot be correct because xyz, I feel this explanation is silly because....

and

'How dare you start bitching about this person who do you think you are? This thread is awful I'm reporting it, I'm shocked MN is allowing Grown women to speak like this XYZ'

It is good that we have more discussion now. This wasn't the case formerly.

Anyway sorry to derail and I shall leave you guys to it. It's been really lovely overall and very sorry to be negative.

Sorry @FlickingVees

Thanks for the documentary tip @Myimaginarycathasfleas

FWIW I don't think they should have the right to keep the 'Royal' bit.

Hope everyone stays ok and thrives not survives.

rockingchaircandle · 24/01/2020 12:30

@HuloBeraal

If their best option was to withdraw and disappear in the face of the hounding from the press, how could they have participated in the fundamentally important conversations about race?

They might seem like privileged brats, but also they need money! I think they had a right to negotiate for their family. Press coverage was probably inflammatory about this too.

ClementineWardobe · 24/01/2020 12:30

Oh and Stephen Spielberg was FURIOUS at not being allowed to copyright/trademark the word Jurassic because it is a time period.... He was gently told it would be like trying to take ownership of the word Wednesday 😁

daysofpearlyspencer · 24/01/2020 12:31

Worth noting that the Duchy of Cornwall outfit does not pay tax, residents in the Scilly Isles are not always allowed to buy property. If Charles died the Duchy reverts to the Crown. So Charles isn't really using his own money to fund them.

I respect PH for standing by his wife but it was poorly done. Meghan was clearly bored by life in the UK and this is her chance to be a Hollywood A lister without the confines of royal duty. I think PH will miss his friends who have been incredibly loyal and never sold stories.

If they had wanted peace and quiet there are vast royal estates where they could have got that.

Originalyellowbelly · 24/01/2020 12:31

Delurking to send best wishes to all who have suffered losses or have worries. The thing I find most sad is the fact the DoE is very frail and unwell and H may have given up the chance to see him again and I wonder if they will both come back here when the time comes.

On a lighter note, I have 4 cats who at times are a tag team of annoyances, though I love them all dearly of course.

ClementineWardobe · 24/01/2020 12:31

And FWIW I really don't think they (h and m) need the money....

rockingchaircandle · 24/01/2020 12:33

@CatherineofAragon we'll have to agree to disagree. It still seems like you're trying to define what an acceptable contribution is and you'll need your own private forum to do that. (Speaking as someone who has definitely been targeted!)

peridito · 24/01/2020 12:41

tell us off

using shaming tactics by telling people that they're mean

How dare you start bitching about this person who do you think you are?

I was going to say that CatherineofAragon was making these accusations as to the behaviour of other posters up .But I think she honestly believes them . And genuinely reads malice and ill intent where there is none ,

AuntieStella · 24/01/2020 12:44

I hope the "waiting" of the thread title will be forba long time. It's all gone quiet from Canada. Long may their privacy continue

lboogy · 24/01/2020 12:45

I voted Brexit ( because I don't like how the eu controls it's former colonies through restrictive trade policies/ high tariffs and debt burdens - yet if those colonies tried to raise tariffs on the eu they'd face sanctions) but I support Harry and Meghan.

However I can totally see that it's very likely the Meghan haters are by and large brexiteers

TheBrokenPagoda · 24/01/2020 12:46

Just watching White House Farm. What's the betting Harry took the opportunity to catch the first couple of episodes on ITV Hub when he had his couple of weeks respite here. He obviously has a thing for actresses.

I bet Meghan will watch it in secret too - no one can resist checking out the ex can they

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 24/01/2020 12:50

Did no one refer to bitching yesterday then? No?

JulietJanuary · 24/01/2020 12:52

If you have a good reason like your surname is Royle then you would be able to argue for some sort of coverage . A trade mark is granted in particular areas of goods or services and can end up quite specific as it were.

If there might be some con fusion as to whether the queen endorses the product or service..

That website when Harry & Meghan published their statement was full of this type of confusion / blurring of lines.

HuloBeraal · 24/01/2020 12:53

I think what I meant is that their dignified withdrawal would have sparked this conversation. I don’t think they needed to have participated in it. Except that the entire conversation has now become about money and trademarks and Disney voice overs.

When you say ‘need’ money they are still getting money, yes? If they had done this in a dignified manner (no sudden rush, let Buck House handle the press release, no mention of commercial deals) then there would be much less scrutiny on what PC is giving them and they could be on the board of a few companies etc. It is the MANNER of their withdrawal that has drawn attention and opprobrium.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 24/01/2020 12:54

I was very impressed with Cressida Bonas in White House Farm. I don't know what I expected but she was very good. Not to diminish MM's acting but we haven't seen her in a serious dramatic role so I wouldn't think them comparable.

Snugglepiggy · 24/01/2020 13:00

Really interesting post [email protected]
Reflecting that when they got engaged they wanted to 'hit the ground running'.Perhaps in hindsight that was not such a good idea.I get that biologically time was ticking so why delay getting pregnant.Fortunately for them non of the fertility issues one couples face. And a lovely, healthy baby asap.Undertaking a tour when pregnant, and then again with a relatively new baby? Not easy. But I think they are as much responsible for feeling pressure regarding that as BP .As an actress who has been on an upward trajectory career wise and reached the top with the ultimate role some could say I Meghan is used to self promotion and staying in the spotlight. It's vital for securing, and keeping roles.I doubt very much she would take to the idea of easing into things gradually.Would it come naturally to her to lie low?
I think what has rankled is that in less than 2 years they want to 'hit the ground running ' in the opposite direction and setting up the Sussex Royal website and 'brand' the way the have done has been at best clumsy and naive, at worst very disrespectful to HMQ -who I honestly believe thought she was giving them a title, roles and a house and entrusting them as her ambassadors in all good faith. What rankles is not their desire for an alternative lifestyle and upbringing for Archie but the way they have tried to orchestrate it.

TheBrokenPagoda · 24/01/2020 13:01

@Myimaginarycathasfleas I thought the same! She is really good. I never realised she was an actress. I think she will get offered a lot more. I imagine that won't go down well in certain quarters.

CleansUpDragonPoo · 24/01/2020 13:03

"Last night I found a stash of Stollen bites in the Christmas cupboard.
This morning I found some sprouts lurking at the back of the fridge"

Whoa, Imaginary, as long as you don't find sprouts on your stollen!

rockingchaircandle · 24/01/2020 13:04

I can see why the Royal Family would want control over the name, and had it legally, with the implication of consent that the term gives. I was thinking that granting that permission could be like helping Harry with his income, similar to granting monopolies/royal warrants.

They do have money and I can see why people might think they look greedy wanting more, but I'm not so sure it's unreasonable. Harry's job has been 'a Prince' since birth, and it's almost unprecedented to step away from it. It's left him with no other trade and in need of protection, that won't come cheap. If he's allowed his freedom, I think he also needs money and protection. We probably need more comprehensive plans for helping more royals do it.

I don't think stepping back should have to mean withdrawing completely from public life, and I can understand why they want to negotiate favourable terms for their family.

Aridane · 24/01/2020 13:07

So 118 infighting posts? Maybe MNHQ will remove as a 'bun fight'

rockingchaircandle · 24/01/2020 13:08

Two actors having been in a relationship with the same guy isn't surprising! Doubt there's any jealousy, and as stated, no grounds for comparison of their acting abilities.

VeryLittleOwl · 24/01/2020 13:09

The Queen vs H&M over use of Royal is probably going to be the best trademark bunfight since Victoria Beckham took on Peterborough Football Club! news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2404285.stm

ajandjjmum · 24/01/2020 13:09

Seems like some people want that Aridane - personally I'm just enjoying the Royal chitchat.

Aridane · 24/01/2020 13:12

But where is the royal chitchat?!

derxa · 24/01/2020 13:13

I'm sure HMQ uttered the words "Mummy must be indulged" with regards to her living situation after her husband died. The Queen has always been very indulgent wrt to members of her own family. Perhaps due to guilt at not being personally available to them at all times. For decades Andrew was allowed to pursue his dodgy dealings for example.
Now it seems that Charles and perhaps William are having more influence. Good.
As for politics and demographics, I'm very definitely a Remainer and resigned to Brexit, over 50. I find Harry and Meghan's behaviour appalling. I never warmed to Meghan from what I've seen of her. I'm not going to rehash why. The RF needs to be slimmed down to direct heirs. I've never heard Autumn Phillips speak and that's as it should be.
