A new thread in which to discuss what happens next in this saga.

And best wishes to mustress and thanks for her excellent thread titles.

I agree class has a lot to do with it. KM, although her dps have money, wasn't of that class either but worked hard at adopting the habits of the aristocracy eg shooting and at befriending people in those circles. That's how she managed to fit in over time. MM didn't.
I also have wondered if MM had a less than welcoming reception from certain members of the RF because of that eg Andrew the arse. I can just imagine how some people would look down their nose at her.

Ooh yes, totally agree. I hadn't considered that she might have been treated badly within the Palace. It's been commented on before that PA is very arrogant, so I could totally imagine this.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 24/01/2020 20:22

As a couple I imagine H&M will be able to generate income just for turning up, for a while at least.

I can see Meghan getting lucrative deals for fashion, cosmetics, perfume etc. I think her future wealth is pretty much guaranteed.

I'm struggling to see what Harry's contribution will be. He could get an car sponsorship deal, but how does that sit with his climate change credentials? He isn't someone cut out for the business world. Not sure what's left. I suppose they could sell their lifestyle through celebrity magazines but surely that is flying in the face of everything he despises about press intrusion.

Is he just going to have to depend on his father's bounty for ever?

7Worfs · 24/01/2020 20:22

I think it's not the RF members, but the throngs of courtiers that are more likely to be snobby.
The politics among staff are probably something else.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 24/01/2020 20:22

I’m sure Kate experienced a lot of snobbery. The horrible way her mother was talked about was awful.
She isn’t from the ‘top drawer’ so to speak, but all the better for it. I really admire the way she’s got on with it without self pity. She’s now the greatest asset the RF have in my view.

7Worfs · 24/01/2020 20:24

Lord I'm eyeing up the peppermint creams, but the price is stopping me.
I'm also the type to hide in the kitchen and inhale half the box before DH even gets a chance to ask "What are you eating?"

yolofish · 24/01/2020 20:24

I'm trying to imagine how I would fit in should I marry into the RF (unlikely tbf).

I am what most people round here consider 'posh' - I speak nicely, went to boarding school, worked with other posh people and indeed royalty at times.

I'd be like a bloody fish out of water! All that protocol and poncing about with little brooches on ribbons and sashes, having to remember who to curtsey to and who should curtsey to me. And also not swearing.

So I can see that for Megz it would have been a very odd environment. BUT she has a loving husband and is an actress - so she could play a role if she wanted to.

I dont think she wanted to play the role enough, I think her expectations were out of kilter with reality, and at the moment she may think they have done the right thing. But I dont think she understands what 1000 years of history means or can do to someone born into it, or how they can actually just leave that behind.

Andrew should have married Koo Stark, she seemed lovely.

rockingchaircandle · 24/01/2020 20:29

I think good on her for not wanting to play a role! Why should she? Harry's walking away from a lot, he obviously feels it's worth it. He'll need the support of his wife and the rest of the royal family.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 24/01/2020 20:29

I wonder if all the photos on their Instagram are going to be of Meghan only now. Harry will just be a distant memory, unless he’s needed for a chat show. Hmm

roisinagusniamh · 24/01/2020 20:30

I think she wanted to play the roll to begin with but gave up rather quickly when she didn't get instant results.
The bland, beige outfit she wore on her first outing just after her wedding spoke volumes... I was shocked at the sheer (pun intended re tights) conformity of it .
Thank goodness she couldn't keep it up !

roisinagusniamh · 24/01/2020 20:30

Role not roll

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 24/01/2020 20:31

Lily thanks for letting us know how Mustress is getting on

yolofish · 24/01/2020 20:31

rockingchair I think she could have stuck the role out a little longer in order to make a more graceful exit, rather than burning bridges left right and centre.

Yes I know the door appears to be left open, and it probably is for Harry, but Meghan will never be welcomed into the RF again (IMO).

So really what they have done is just create massive turmoil and for what?

rockingchaircandle · 24/01/2020 20:32

I don't know Koo Stark, but if she's lovely, I'm very glad she didn't marry Andrew!

rockingchaircandle · 24/01/2020 20:37

It's hard to say if there would have been a right time for such a difficult decision. I suppose they had to decide for themselves in the end when to make the break, @yolofish. Again, I can't imagine there would have been a right way for them to have done it, and not had someone say it wasn't gracefully done! It was always going to be controversial. How/when do you think would have been acceptable?

JulietJanuary · 24/01/2020 20:43

I wonder how they are coping in Dumbarton with the emigration of their Earl.

I read that they are setting up a television production company and I presume PH would use this as a platform to narrate and/or present documentaries on wildlife conservation, climate change, mental health issues, service veteran's issues, Invictus games-related etc.

JulietJanuary · 24/01/2020 20:48

Its not up to anyone else to write these numptie's resignation Insta a fortnight after the event.

It was obviously badly received by quite a proportion of the UK public. Not the stepping back but the manner of it.

yolofish · 24/01/2020 20:49

rockingchair how would I have done it?

First off, I'd have stuck it out for at least another six months, not taken mat leave then a six week break in another country.

In the meantime, I'd have gone to see my purse-string holding father and had a good old conversation. I wouldnt have allowed the courtiers to prevent such a meeting. I'd also have talked to my brother - who has effectively been left in the lurch - and tried to find a way through.

I'd have explained to my relatively new wife and mother of my 8 month old baby that chucking one's toys out of the pram was not going to get us very far, especially given that we actually want some of Daddy's money while we "work to become financially independent".

I'd also have defined a much clearer idea of what being financially independent would look like and how we'd get there.

And above all I wouldn't have allowed a situation in which HMQ was so blatantly put in a very difficult position - she is my GM after all, plus holds a global position.

I'm sure I can think of more...

Yolofishyoud would clearly make a much nicer and more "regal" royal than me!

derxa · 24/01/2020 20:59

I like the Irish expression 'having notions'
www.dailyedge.ie/irish-mammies-notions-1384206-Mar2014/
I definitely think Meghan has 'notions'. I don't mean that nastily. She just thinks that 'upward mobility' leads to a happy life and it really isn't a guarantee of happiness.

LordOfTheWhys · 24/01/2020 21:00

Juliet I drove past Dumbarton today. They seem to be coping Wink

roisinagusniamh · 24/01/2020 21:02

As my Grandmother would have said ..."far from that she was raised"
Incredible snob was my dear Granny !

rockingchaircandle · 24/01/2020 21:04

@yolofish I don't think you would have bought yourself much grace by waiting six months- the knives would still have been out!

I doubt defining what you would have wanted your financial position to look like would have mattered. I think they did that and it still has to be negotiated with the royal family. What global position does the Queen hold?

JulietJanuary · 24/01/2020 21:07

I just looked up their local newspaper and the comments under the story were sparse and terse!
