Think one of the saddest bits is Harry severing ties with the military

From The Telegraph

But with some in the Royal Marines, of which Harry is Captain General, said to be “disgusted” by his behaviour and threatening to refuse to raise a toast should he attempt to “commercialise” his royal role.

The army don't threaten to refuse anything. Royal Marines refusing to raise a toast to a Royal is a pretty big deal.

Lunde · 18/01/2020 22:10

I think that Harry opting out of the Royal Marine's Memorial in order attend the Lion King premiere to hobnob with A list celebs tout for a Disney job for his wife went over very badly in military circles

AppleKatie · 18/01/2020 22:11

Well yes, it would wouldn’t it.

DeRigueurMortis · 18/01/2020 22:11

The ties I have to the military? They are voicing their displeasure.

I only have a couple of friends whose partners are in the military.

So yes, a very small cohort.

However, their response has been pretty robust in the sense that there is a very strong ethic of duty to the forces and the country even at personal sacrifice and thus "disquiet" (put mildly) at H's behaviour.

Total speculation but tbh I wouldn't be surprised on the premise that this is a widely shared response within the military, that the "agreement" that H should step down from any military positions didn't come from the palace but from the top brass at the military itself.

You can't hold service personal to a
set of ideals that their (even ceremonial) leaders have shown not to value.

MeghanMountbattenSausage · 18/01/2020 22:13

So if Megs wants to visit a charity and then tell that charity what to write in their social media post about said visit, she can. She can wear what she wants and get paid

Sorry this was a few pages ago. @DuchessofWoke was this you?

Are you seriously telling me that the Duchess is going to get one of her aides to phone up some tiny little women's charity on spec like she did the other day, pitch up and talk "climate change" and drink vegan coffee or whatever, stick all the photos on Instagram then SEND THEM A BILL? This kind of thing could sink some of the smaller charities. And as for the bigger charities, well.....all I can say is that I'm unhappy enough with the executive salaries being paid by some of the bigger charities, and would ideally like MORE of my donations to go to the needy, not be spent on executive salaries and/or the cost of fundraising. I REALLY don't think I would want them to be paying out even more to keep the Mee-gain in the style you wants to aspire to. Sorry but no.

As a previous poster said - in terms of public speaking they have no world experience or education or opinions worth listening to and PH is a TERRIBLE public speaker. And tea towels? Mmmm.

Reckon Charlie boy is going to have to dig deep as he will be footing the bill for all of this.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 18/01/2020 22:14

I wonder if the world will care about them at all in a few years for now. Their famous friends were really just mutually convenient connections. Are Amal Clooney and Meghan really such great friends? Will Barak Obama want to stay in touch with Harry? I doubt it. I can see them all quietly distancing themselves from H&M who will soon be irrelevant. Harry isn’t particularly special or talented and I can seem Megan getting impatient and imploding...

kinsss · 18/01/2020 22:14

I'd say the monarchy will be gone before George becomes King. Hope so. None of them are sane! Well in my mind anyway.

Time to let go of an anachronism before any more kids are melted.

MarySidney · 18/01/2020 22:15

Don't suppose it went down too well with Philip, either, since the Royal Marines was his job which he handed over to Harry on his retirement.

augustusglupe · 18/01/2020 22:16

He’s lost everyone’s respect. So has she but then she’s got nothing to lose. No amount of money or title is going to make up for the fact that he’s a disrespectful, spoilt man-child.
I think it’s a case of be careful what you wish for.
Someone mentioned a Pyrrhic victory earlier up thread...I think that is spot on.

StartupRepair · 18/01/2020 22:18

Really hope Kate has another baby if that is what she wants. Also hope she is seen soon in a stonking emerald tiara.

QueenofDestruction · 18/01/2020 22:19

@14TulipsTulipsTulips, I think that is a good point and personally feel that they will be careful not to support H&M in a way that would damage any potential relationship with the.more important royal - those in or in direct line to the throne

kinsss · 18/01/2020 22:19

This was planned for ages. It didn't just happen last week.

RF or the Firm have been sharpening their quills fo this for a ling time..

JacquesHammer · 18/01/2020 22:21

Really hope Kate has another baby if that is what she wants

I wonder if William and Kate would face a backlash given their “let’s start a decade of climate change” stance?

UniversalAunt · 18/01/2020 22:21

‘Most charities follow a code of governance, and have a board of directors who will insist that a policy regarding visitors and fundraising is upheld for the best interests of the charity, and those the charity serves, and categorically not the sleb. who fancies a self promoting do-good Instagram post.’

This

DeRigueurMortis · 18/01/2020 22:22

Now that's just a bit mean - but also very funny Grin

bohemia14 · 18/01/2020 22:22

I just saw a clip of their visit to Canada House at the start of the BBC news. Meghan was giggling like a schoolgirl.

I rather suspect that she thinks she's got what she wants. Harry isn't bright enough (and too foofstruck) to realise what he's actually got and what he's lost. The Queen, I hope, at the age of 93, having been put in a terrible position by her grandson, has done what she can in the circumstances and will be no doubt hoping that they'll be hoist by their own petard.

And I suspect that the rest of us never want to see their smug faces again. I just hope the rest of the world (Hollywood!!) sees them for what they are.

Dongdingdong · 18/01/2020 22:23

Yes Meghan would still be able to keep the title as long as Harry is Duke of Sussex.

What would happen if Harry were to remarry one day (and was still the Duke of Sussex at that point?)

As for Frogmore - could the Queen give it to Beatrice and Edo?

kinsss · 18/01/2020 22:24

Most big charities spend more on CEOs and admin/headquarters than on the cause though.

That's why I give to the tiny ones.

AppleKatie · 18/01/2020 22:26

She could but I doubt she would. They aren’t short of places to live and I don’t think she gave Eugenie and Jack such a massive place? It would be politically insensitive, more likely the place will be mothballed for the foreseeable.

strictlymomdancing · 18/01/2020 22:26

Not exactly a "progressive new role" if they are stepping back completely! It was only recently that they said they wanted such a role, so again I doubt these conversations have been going on for many months like the statement said, and H&M just wanted QE to say that to make them look better.

2020BetterBeBetter · 18/01/2020 22:27

What would happen if Harry were to remarry one day (and was still the Duke of Sussex at that point?)

Then it’s likely that there would be Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (unless she had voluntarily dropped the title by that stage) and New Wife, Duchess of Sussex, Princess Henry.

strictlymomdancing · 18/01/2020 22:28

oh and my 11yo just said she'd love to be a princess and get "money for nothing". All her own words, I've never spoken to her about this, she's just seen it on the news. Grin

2020BetterBeBetter · 18/01/2020 22:28

As for Frogmore - could the Queen give it to Beatrice and Edo?

For now it is still Harry and Meghan’s home although due to their loss of status as senior royals, they should now be paying market rent for it.

MummyOfBoyAndGirl · 18/01/2020 22:30

Just a thought about their patronage. Surely most of their patronage's could continue as personal. Bit that would be at the joint agreement of the organisation & the patron. So for example PH may continue to commit to Invictus & despite his changed status they may want him to rending. However another organisation may not want a patron who is not a UK resident & cannot use HRH?

So effectively HMQ is leaving the patronages to be negotiated?

OVienna · 18/01/2020 22:30

I was hoping to hear full confirmation the titles were swiped. That is unclear - are they Meghan and Harry Mountbatten-Windsor? At lest there will have to be a massive climb down on that website. Wonder if Sunshine SACHS has been paid yet? I see there was a poster up thread who thought the Queen was trying to signal that it was their idea to pay the money back although it wouldn't "fit the narrative" of this thread. Balonz. Nit a chance they would have released that website if anything if the Queen's statement was what they were expecting the outcome to be.
