Forgive my ignorance- Mountbatten was a Prince if what? And what war?

FirstOfHerName · 06/05/2019 07:52

Of Battenberg. He and his sister (Prince Philip's mother) were the children of Queen Victoria's granddaughter (also called Victoria) and a prince of Battenberg. They gave up their titles for the surname Mountbatten in WWI.

borntobequiet · 06/05/2019 07:52

He was born Prince Louis of Battenberg

British royals with German titles were made to give them up (by George V) in WW1 - the British became Mountbattens and the Tecks became other things - Alexander of Teck became the Earl of Athlone, another Teck became Marquess of Cambridge....

TheWeeMacGregors · 06/05/2019 09:50

Interesting! Thank you! Like the cake!

desertgirl · 06/05/2019 09:52

Berg is hill or mountain so it was really just anglicisation. The oldest brother became Marquess of Milford Haven (do wonder how they pick the places....)

BishopBrennansArse · 06/05/2019 10:09

Really can't believe that sprog isn't here yet. Obvs very cosy where it is.

I think that the baby has been born already. Didn't they say that they would announce it when they were ready after spending time with him/her?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/05/2019 13:39

Didn't they say that they would announce it when they were ready after spending time with him/her?

They also said in a briefing to the media that they would announce (to the media) when the DoS was in labour. I think we'd know if that had happened, not least because we have some eagle eyed MNers keeping an eye on comings and goings at Windsor!

SenecaFalls · 06/05/2019 13:43

do wonder how they pick the places

I remember reading about someone from a modest background who was getting a life peerage and was told to pick something related to where he had resided the longest. "I guess I'll have to be Lord Topflat."

I think Milford Haven has strong naval connotations and Prince Louis had been First Sea Lord.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 06/05/2019 13:50

Finally MM has gone into labour!

Boffing · 06/05/2019 14:02

At last!

Itsnotmesothere · 06/05/2019 14:04

DoS must have a change of heart then.

TooManyPaws · 06/05/2019 14:05

Early hours of this morning according to Sky News.

BishopBrennansArse · 06/05/2019 14:11

She's off. At last.

At last and common sense has prevailed I knew they’d announce when in labour/born.

So many overreactions to the news that they weren’t publicising the hospital in advance/going to do a picture on the steps.

TooManyPaws · 06/05/2019 14:15

the Tecks became other things - Alexander of Teck became the Earl of Athlone, another Teck became Marquess of Cambridge....

Cambridge wasn't a reach as the mother of Queen Mary, the Earl of Athlone and the Marquess of Cambridge was Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, daughter of the Duke of Cambridge and granddaughter of George III. They lived at Kensington Palace.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 06/05/2019 14:15

Oh Lordy -anyone tell me how avoid the news for the next 6 months 😬🥴🤯

❤ you Meghan

allworthwhile · 06/05/2019 14:16

"An announcement will be made soon"

Wonder what that could be!

Aragog · 06/05/2019 14:16

DoS must have a change of heart then.

The press release always said that labour would be announced.
Just some of the media only ever printed the first part of the release - made many headlines most likely.

allworthwhile · 06/05/2019 14:19

Actually it was because the second half of the operational note wasn't supposed to be released to the public - nothing to do with headlines Smile

Aragog · 06/05/2019 14:23

But the press knew what it said and still decided to suggest that we'd only know after the birth when the couple decided to allow it. They could have easily commented that labour would be announced but didn't.

TooManyPaws · 06/05/2019 14:26

Talking about being born in various places, there's a story of how a royal retainer was being snooty with 'the poor relation' Prince Philip after the engagement and PP put his gas at a peep by saying "yes, I know about Windsor Castle; my mother was born there". 😁

Did anyone see the Channel 4 documentary last night about George VI and his involvement in the D-day disinformation scheme? It also seems that the Queen is pretty tight in with the secret services which makes PW's work experience with them more relevant. Pretty obviously, the secret services weren't originally trusting of the RF after Edward VIII.

There's also a series starting tonight (on Really or one of the documentary channels) about the royals at war, starting with PP who was genuinely in the thick of WW2. It also covers the Queen, given that she is the only surviving head of state who served in WW2 - apparently she's still a dab hand with old motor engines.
