Very often it's the man who has the title/power/money in those matches whereas despite being a commoner she had it all and he had very little.

True. There's a lot of pragmatism in there, though, I think.

RubberTreePlant · 05/05/2019 21:28

Quick bit of sleuthing tells me that there was an Edwina A C Ashley born in early 1902 & it gives her place of birth as St George Hanover Square. That would mean that not only are both the wiki dates wrong but so is her place of birth & the order of her middle names!

How odd.

I suppose the record keeping was more slapdash then, and the aristocracy did as they liked to a large extent. Nobody has ever managed to pin down exactly where the Queen Mother was born, have they?

Nevertheless, how very weird!

AGnu · 05/05/2019 21:29

I'm sure I heard somewhere that it was common for kings to be godparents to their illegitimate spawn as a sort of way of acknowledging them without acknowledging paternity. Plus, she's given the female version of his name!

RubberTreePlant · 05/05/2019 21:31

When you break the story in a bestseller, mention us all in your acknowledgements, won't you? Smile

lyralalala · 05/05/2019 21:34

Could St George Hanover Square be where she was baptised?

Some old records where there are only church records actually show the baptismal date rather than birth date.

Although Nov to early 1902 is a bit of a delay if her wiki birth date is correct.

lyralalala · 05/05/2019 21:38

I think her 1900 birth date on wiki is wrong as her parents didn't marry until January 1901.

Plus if she was born November 1901 instead of 1900 that would make a birth registration in the first quarter of 1902 fit

AGnu · 05/05/2019 21:50

On her dad's wiki page it says he married her mum in 1879... When he was 12... Hmm

RubberTreePlant · 05/05/2019 21:52

So it does!

AGnu · 05/05/2019 21:53

I'm beginning to think Wikipedia isn't a reliable source of information... Who knew?! People should be warned about this...

RubberTreePlant · 05/05/2019 21:53

😂🤣

Daisypie · 05/05/2019 21:54

Agree about the Montdores!

AGnu · 05/05/2019 22:01

Edwina's sister Ruth married Thomas Pitt Hamilton Cholmondeley, 4th Baron Delamere. I'm assuming that's some relation to a certain other Cholmondeley who may or may not be the subject of certain rumours which started these threads in the first place...?!

Edwina inherited a massive fortune from her grandfather , the equivalent of £52M , Mountbatten has very little on the other hand,

But Edwina didn’t seem frivolous , she had very strong work ethics and was very involved various charities and Even Mountbattens trusted her With not so genteel duties like visiting prison camps and reporting back to him on the conditions,
I don’t think she was a very involved in raising her daughters. They both seemed like a good professional team.

Very often it's the man who has the title/power/money in those matches whereas despite being a commoner she had it all and he had very little

Don’t forget all the money American heiresses brought to cash poor aristos families in the Late 1800s. Not only were they wealthy but powerful too, the Vanderbilt were the richest family in America , they owned extraordinary mansions. But they were always portrayed as though they were lesser illustrious Than the Marlborough’s , which is not fair.

In the written details bit about personal life it says "Lord Mount Temple married Amalia Mary Maud Cassel, daughter and only child of financier Sir Ernest Cassel, in early January, 1901.[1] Amongst the wedding guests was The Prince Albert Edward, The Prince of Wales (the wedding taking place on 4 January, only eighteen days before Albert Edward became King-Emperor), who was a friend of Cassel.[14] The couple had two daughters:*

So that's two dates on the one page

lyralalala · 05/05/2019 22:06

According to FreeBMD Amalia Mary M Cassel married Wilfrid William Ashley in the march 1/4 of 1901 at St George Hanover Square

AGnu · 05/05/2019 22:12

She'd have to have been knocked up pretty quickly to give birth that November! I suppose that wouldn't have been unusual in those days.

The citation for Edwina's mum being "friends" with Edward VII comes from King Edward VII A Biography Part II by Sidney Lee. I'm wondering just how invested I am in all this... Do I track down a copy just to see what it says?!

lyralalala · 05/05/2019 22:16

I wonder if their engagement was announced in the Gazette as that would show how quickly organised the wedding was

Boomsk · 05/05/2019 22:25

Who was Sophie who had the placental abruption?

Which family does she belong to?

AGnu · 05/05/2019 22:37

I haven't found an engagement announcement but I did find this... Seems reasonable to assume it's talking about Edwina's baptism when she would've been about 5wo, if our assumptions about her being born 28/11/01 are correct... I'd have to pay for access to further information... I'm not that invested!

The Countess of Wessex. Prince Edward's wife

AGnu · 05/05/2019 22:44

Same website informs me that Edwina's mum was famous as one of the best bridge players in London. I love that I can find all this random information with minimal effort over a hundred years later!

RubberTreePlant · 05/05/2019 22:46

You're down the rabbit hole now Smile

AGnu · 05/05/2019 22:59

I really am. Blush Someone rescue me! I can't even remember why Edwina was mentioned in the first place!

lyralalala · 05/05/2019 23:00

Because she was... well... kinky

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/05/2019 02:40

Edwina's maternal grandfather was Sir Ernest Cassel a merchant banker & capitalist. He was born in Prussia to a Jewish family but converted to Roman Catholicism when he married his British wife.

Louis Mountbatten was born at Frogmore House. Everything seems to happen at Frogmore (house & cottage.)
